Chapter 3: The Camera That Saw Everything

Richard didn't sleep that night.

At 2:17 a.m., he was still sitting in his study, staring at the notebook.

Margaret sat across from him with a cup of untouched tea.

Neither had spoken for nearly twenty minutes.

Finally, Richard closed the notebook.

"I think Ethan planned this.""

Margaret looked up.

"You think?""

Richard rubbed his eyes.

"I don't want to accuse my own son without knowing everything.""

She gave a tired laugh.

"And what about me? You've been willing to question my entire character based on a plastic bag and a photograph.""

Richard lowered his head.

"You're right.""

The words came quietly.

But they didn't erase what had happened.

Margaret stood and walked toward the bookshelf.

"I spent six years trying to make that boy feel welcome.""

Richard followed her with his eyes.

"I know.""

"I never asked him to love me. I never expected him to call me family. I only asked him not to treat me like an enemy.""

Her voice cracked.

"And now he's trying to make everyone believe I'm some kind of woman who brings strangers into her husband's house.""

Richard stood.

"Margaret, I'm sorry.""

She turned.

"Do you understand how humiliating this is?""

"Yes.""

"No, Richard. You don't.""

She wiped her cheek.

"If someone at church hears about this, what do you think they'll say? If Ethan sends those pictures to his friends, how do I explain something I never did?""

Richard approached her.

"I won't let him spread those lies.""

Margaret looked at him.

"Then find the truth.""

At 7:30 the following morning, Richard called Daniel Brooks, the security technician who had originally installed the cameras.

Daniel arrived an hour later carrying a laptop and a small equipment case.

"Morning, Richard. You said there was a problem with the security system?""

Richard led him into the study.

"Someone disabled one of the cameras and may have manipulated some footage.""

Daniel's expression became serious.

"Manipulated how?""

Richard placed the notebook on the desk.

Daniel read the last page.

He looked up.

"Where did you find this?""

"In the guest room.""

Daniel sat down.

"Okay. First, don't touch anything else on the system. I want to make a forensic copy of the recordings and the access logs.""

Margaret stood near the doorway.

"Can you tell whether someone edited a video?""

Daniel nodded.

"Sometimes. It depends on how the footage was stored and whether the original data is still available.""

He connected his laptop to the security console.

Several minutes passed.

Then he frowned.

"That's interesting.""

Richard leaned forward.

"What?""

"The hallway footage Ethan showed you wasn't exported directly from the camera system.""

"How can you tell?""

"The original files contain a device signature and metadata. This clip has neither.""

Daniel opened another window.

"It appears to have been re-encoded.""

Richard's face tightened.

"Does that mean it's fake?""

"It means someone processed it. That doesn't automatically prove the scene was fabricated, but it means we need to find the original.""

Daniel searched through the stored recordings.

The first camera showed the front entrance.

The second covered the back door.

The third covered the upstairs hallway.

He opened the footage from the night in question.

At 9:58 p.m., Richard appeared on screen, walking upstairs.

At 10:12 p.m., Margaret entered the master bedroom.

At 10:19 p.m., the hallway was empty.

At 10:43 p.m., the time Ethan had claimed to see Margaret meeting a man, the camera showed something different.

A shadow crossed the wall.

Then the figure of a person appeared.

Daniel paused the video.

"That's not a woman.""

Richard leaned closer.

The person was wearing a dark hoodie and carrying something in one hand.

The figure stopped directly beneath the camera.

Then looked up.

Margaret covered her mouth.

It was Ethan.

He was standing in the upstairs hallway at 10:43 p.m.

The exact time he had claimed Margaret was bringing a man into the guest room.

Daniel resumed the footage.

Ethan looked toward the master bedroom.

Then he walked to the guest-room door.

He used a key.

He entered.

Seven minutes later, he came out carrying an object.

He closed the door carefully and walked downstairs.

Richard stared at the screen.

"Can you zoom in?""

Daniel enlarged the image.

The object in Ethan's hand appeared to be a small rectangular package.

Margaret whispered, "What did he take?""

Daniel adjusted the contrast.

"Hard to tell. But there's something else.""

He opened a second camera recording.

This one covered the staircase and the entrance to the kitchen.

At 10:51 p.m., Ethan appeared again.

He walked into the kitchen, opened a drawer, and removed a pair of scissors.

Then he went to the dining table.

He placed something on it.

Richard watched without blinking.

Ethan opened a small plastic bag.

He removed an item.

Then he cut off a small piece of fabric.

Margaret's stomach turned.

Daniel paused the footage.

"Do either of you recognize that?""

Richard stared.

It was the black lace garment Ethan had presented the previous afternoon.

Margaret shook her head.

"No. I've never owned anything like that.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Well, it appears your son had it in his possession before he claimed to discover it.""

Richard stood abruptly.

"Where is he?""

"Richard," Daniel said, "we should preserve the recordings first.""

But Richard was already reaching for his phone.

He called Ethan.

No answer.

He called again.

Still nothing.

Margaret moved closer to the desk.

"Don't confront him yet.""

Richard turned toward her.

"He's been doing this under our roof.""

"I know.""

"He put those things in our bedroom.""

"I know, Richard.""

"He made me doubt you.""

Her eyes filled again.

"That's exactly why we need to be careful.""

Daniel continued examining the files.

"There's another recording you should see.""

He opened the camera footage from the garage.

At 8:04 p.m. the previous evening, Ethan entered carrying a backpack.

He placed it on the workbench.

Then he removed a small tripod and a phone.

He positioned the tripod near the garage door.

Richard frowned.

"What is he doing?""

Daniel played the footage.

Ethan stepped in front of the phone.

He held up the same pale robe that appeared in the manipulated hallway video.

Then he took a photograph of himself wearing it.

A few seconds later, he removed the robe and held it against a mannequin stored in the corner.

Margaret stared at the screen.

"He's recreating something.""

Daniel nodded.

"Looks that way.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Why would he do that?""

The next few minutes answered part of that question.

Ethan opened his laptop.

He transferred the photograph.

Then he opened an image-editing program.

Daniel zoomed in.

On the laptop screen was the hallway photograph Ethan had shown Richard the previous day.

The one supposedly showing Margaret with another man.

Ethan moved the image around.

He adjusted the brightness.

He changed the position of the figure's head.

Then he added a second silhouette.

Margaret felt sick.

Richard gripped the edge of the desk.

"That's enough.""

But Daniel didn't stop.

"There's more.""

He opened the system access history.

"At 8:16 p.m., Ethan disabled the guest-room camera. At 8:29, he accessed the archive. At 8:47, he exported several clips.""

"Can you identify the files?"" Richard asked.

Daniel nodded.

"Yes. And one of them was deleted afterward.""

"Can you recover it?""

"Possibly.""

Daniel worked silently.

The laptop fan grew louder.

A progress bar appeared.

Thirty seconds passed.

Then a folder opened.

Daniel clicked on the recovered file.

The screen showed the guest room.

Ethan entered.

He placed the black lace garment inside the bottom drawer.

Then he took the handwritten note from his pocket.

He placed it inside another drawer.

Finally, he stepped back, looked around the room, and took a photograph.

The footage ended.

Margaret sat down slowly.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Richard looked as though someone had struck him.

"That's my son," he whispered.

Daniel closed the video.

"There's something else in the recovered folder.""

He clicked on a document.

A list of instructions appeared.

At the top was a title.

*PLAN B — IF DAD DOESN'T BELIEVE THE FIRST EVIDENCE.*

Richard read the first line.

Then the second.

His face drained of color.

Margaret leaned closer.

The final instruction was underlined twice.

Make sure Dad sees the hallway video before he checks the original recordings.

Richard stared at the screen.

"Why would he want me to see it before the original?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Because the original recordings might show what actually happened.""

Richard turned toward Margaret.

She didn't speak.

Then Daniel opened the final file.

It was a video recorded on Ethan's phone.

The image was shaky.

Ethan was sitting in his car, speaking to someone outside the camera frame.

His voice was unmistakable.

"Once Dad sees the pictures, he'll never look at her the same way again.""

A second voice asked, "And what if he checks the cameras?""

Ethan laughed.

"By then, she'll be gone.""

Richard's fingers curled into fists.

Then Ethan said something that made the room go completely silent.

"That's the whole point. I don't need Dad to prove she did anything. I just need him to believe it long enough to get her out of the house.""

Margaret stared at the screen.

But the recording wasn't over.

The other person asked one final question.

"And what about your father's money?""

Ethan leaned closer to the phone.

His answer was barely a whisper.

"Once she's out, Dad will finally sign the papers.""

Richard slowly turned toward the desk.

"What papers?""

Daniel stopped the recording.

He looked at Richard.

"I think you need to see the next file.""

On the screen was a scanned legal document.

Richard opened it.

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then he stopped.

It was a draft of a financial authorization agreement.

His signature line was blank.

And the person listed as the proposed beneficiary was not Ethan.

It was a company Richard had never heard of.

Margaret leaned over his shoulder.

"Richard, what is that?""

He scrolled to the final page.

A name appeared beneath the company's registration details.

*Ethan Carter.*

Richard stared at the screen.

His son hadn't simply wanted his stepmother out of the house.

He had been preparing something much bigger.

May you like

And when Richard finally looked at the date on the document, he realized the plan had started months before the first accusation.

*The document had been prepared three months before Ethan planted the evidence.*
