Chapter 4: The Signature He Wanted

Richard read the document again.

Then a third time.

The room was so quiet that the ticking clock above the bookshelf sounded unusually loud.

The agreement was titled Irrevocable Financial Authorization and Property Management Agreement. It gave a designated representative extensive control over Richard's financial accounts, investment portfolio, and several properties held under his name.

The designated representative was a company called Carter Legacy Holdings.

And its sole registered director was Ethan Carter.

Richard lowered the papers.

"Daniel, how long has this company existed?""

Daniel examined the registration details.

"According to the document, it was established five months ago.""

"Five months?""

"That's what it says.""

Richard shook his head.

"I never approved this.""

Margaret stood behind his chair.

"Could someone have used your personal information?""

Richard stared at the signature section.

"Someone had access to my financial records. My identification documents. Even the details of my properties.""

He looked at Margaret.

"Ethan helped me organize those files after my surgery last year.""

Margaret remembered that period.

Richard had undergone a minor operation and needed assistance with several household responsibilities. Ethan had volunteered to handle his father's paperwork.

At the time, Richard had been grateful.

Now that memory felt like a warning he had failed to recognize.

Daniel pointed toward the computer.

"There's a folder containing several drafts. This wasn't a one-time document.""

Richard opened it.

Inside were six versions of the agreement.

The earliest was dated five months earlier.

The most recent had been created just twelve days before the confrontation.

Each version gave Ethan slightly more authority.

One included access to Richard's business accounts.

Another listed Margaret as someone whose consent would no longer be required for certain household property decisions.

Richard leaned back.

"Why would he need my wife removed before I signed this?""

Margaret answered quietly.

"Because he knows you wouldn't sign it while I was here.""

Richard looked at her.

She continued.

"He knows I read every document you bring home. He knows I'd ask questions.""

Daniel clicked on another file.

A spreadsheet appeared.

It contained property values, bank account references, and estimated inheritance amounts.

At the bottom was a column labeled Obstacles.

Richard's name appeared first.

Beside it was the word Resistance.

Margaret's name appeared underneath.

Beside hers was a single word.

Removal.

Richard closed his eyes.

For years, he had told himself that Ethan's hostility toward Margaret came from grief.

He had assumed his son was struggling to accept that his father had found happiness again.

He had defended Ethan's behavior at family gatherings.

He had excused the insults.

He had even apologized to Margaret on his son's behalf.

But this was different.

This was deliberate.

"Call the attorney," Richard said.

Margaret touched his shoulder.

"Which attorney?""

"Jonathan Miller. He's handled my estate and business matters for fifteen years.""

Daniel saved copies of the recovered recordings onto an encrypted drive.

Richard picked up his phone.

Before he could make the call, it rang.

The screen displayed Ethan's name.

Richard answered.

"Where are you?""

There was a brief silence.

Then Ethan spoke.

"At the office. Why?""

"Come home.""

"I have meetings.""

"Cancel them.""

"Dad, what's going on?""

Richard looked at the laptop.

"Your belongings are in the guest room. Come and collect them.""

Another silence.

"What are you talking about?""

"Don't pretend you don't understand.""

Ethan's voice became cautious.

"Did she tell you something?""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Your father is asking you to come home.""

Ethan sighed.

"Fine. I'll be there in an hour.""

He ended the call.

Margaret watched Richard place the phone on the desk.

"Do you think he'll come?""

"He'll come.""

"How can you be sure?""

Richard looked at the financial agreement.

"Because he still thinks he can control what happens next.""

Ethan arrived at 11:46 a.m.

He walked into the study wearing a navy business suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

His expression was irritated rather than frightened.

"What's so urgent?""

Richard stood beside the desk.

"Sit down.""

Ethan glanced at Margaret.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No," Richard replied.

Ethan frowned.

"She's involved in this now?""

"She's been involved since the day you decided to destroy her reputation.""

Ethan gave a short laugh.

"Here we go again.""

Richard placed the black notebook on the desk.

"Do you recognize this?""

Ethan looked at it.

For half a second, his expression changed.

Then he shrugged.

"Looks like my old notebook.""

"Where did you find it?""

"Probably in the guest room.""

"You wrote these entries?""

"I don't remember.""

Richard opened the notebook to the final page.

"Read this.""

Ethan glanced down.

His lips pressed together.

"What's your point?""

Richard placed the recovered financial agreement beside it.

"Did you establish Carter Legacy Holdings?""

Ethan leaned back.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"It's an investment company.""

"With my money?""

"With money you were going to leave me eventually.""

Richard stared at him.

"Eventually?""

Ethan shrugged.

"You're my father. I'm your only child.""

Margaret stepped forward.

"That doesn't give you the right to take anything from him.""

Ethan turned toward her.

"Nobody asked you.""

Richard struck the desk with his palm.

"You will not speak to my wife that way.""

Ethan rolled his eyes.

"Fine. Your wife.""

Richard pushed the agreement closer.

"Did you prepare this document?""

"I had a lawyer draft something.""

"Without telling me?""

"I was trying to organize things before it became too late.""

"Too late for what?""

Ethan hesitated.

Then he looked directly at his father.

"For you to realize she's manipulating you.""

Margaret shook her head.

"You're still doing it.""

Ethan ignored her.

"Look at what she's done. You used to spend time with me. You used to take me fishing. You used to talk to me about the business.""

Richard's expression softened slightly.

"That was before you stopped returning my calls.""

"Because every time I came here, she was sitting beside you.""

"She's my wife, Ethan.""

"Exactly!""

Ethan stood.

"You replaced Mom and expected me to smile about it.""

Richard remained still.

"Your mother died eight years ago. Nobody replaced her.""

Ethan's eyes flashed.

"Don't tell me what she meant to me.""

"I would never do that.""

"Then stop pretending this woman belongs here.""

Margaret's face tightened.

"I didn't take your mother's place. I never wanted to.""

Ethan laughed.

"You think I believe that?""

Richard moved between them.

"Enough. I want the truth about the recordings.""

Ethan froze.

"What recordings?""

"The original security footage.""

Ethan looked at Daniel's equipment.

Then he slowly turned toward his father.

"You checked the cameras?""

"Yes.""

A strange expression crossed Ethan's face.

"Then you saw it.""

"I saw you entering the guest room. I saw you planting the items. I saw you editing the photograph.""

Ethan's face reddened.

"You don't understand what you saw.""

Richard stared at him.

"Explain it.""

Ethan opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Richard continued.

"You disabled the camera. You created false evidence. You put things in my bedroom and accused my wife of something she never did.""

Ethan's voice rose.

"I was trying to protect you!""

"From what?""

"From her!""

Richard shook his head.

"You're going to have to do better than that.""

Ethan looked toward Margaret.

For the first time, the anger in his expression seemed mixed with panic.

"She doesn't love you.""

Richard stepped closer.

"That is not your decision.""

"She wants your money.""

"How convenient that you discovered this after I found your financial agreement.""

Ethan's mouth opened.

Richard held up the document.

"Explain why you were preparing to take control of my accounts.""

Ethan's expression changed completely.

He reached for the papers.

Richard pulled them away.

"Don't touch them.""

"Those are private.""

"They're my property.""

Ethan's breathing became faster.

"You're making a huge mistake.""

Richard looked at his son for a long moment.

"No, Ethan. I made a mistake five months ago.""

"What?""

"I trusted you with my personal documents.""

Ethan looked toward the door.

Richard noticed.

"Don't leave. We're not finished.""

But Ethan grabbed his briefcase.

"I have nothing more to say.""

He walked toward the hallway.

At the doorway, he stopped.

Without turning around, he said, "You should ask Margaret what she knows about your first wife's belongings.""

Richard frowned.

"What does that have to do with anything?""

Ethan finally looked back.

"Ask her about the missing letters.""

Then he left.

Margaret stood motionless.

Richard turned toward her.

"What letters?""

She looked genuinely confused.

"I don't know.""

Richard searched her face.

"Margaret?""

"I swear to you, Richard, I don't know what he's talking about.""

But Daniel had already reopened the security archive.

He was looking at a different recording.

"Richard," he said slowly.

Richard turned.

"What?""

Daniel pointed at the screen.

"There's footage from the day the letters disappeared.""

The camera showed Margaret entering the guest room carrying a cardboard box.

And several minutes later, she came out carrying nothing.

Richard stared at the screen.

Margaret whispered, "I can explain.""

But before she could say another word, Daniel paused the footage and enlarged the image.

The box Margaret had carried inside was clearly labeled with a name.

*Evelyn Carter.*

May you like

Richard's first wife.

And suddenly, the investigation had uncovered a mystery nobody had expected.
