Chapter 5: The Name Written In Blood

Maya stood at the bottom of the basement stairs holding the envelope like it was something alive.

Something dangerous.

I looked at my sixteen-year-old daughter and wondered how long she had been carrying a truth that was heavy enough to break adults.

“Maya,” I said quietly.

She didn’t move.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

My voice cracked.

“How long have you known?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Since the day I found Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down at the envelope.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

That sentence hurt more than any confession.

Because it sounded exactly like something I would have done.

Try to protect everyone.

Carry everything alone.

And slowly destroy myself in the process.

I walked toward her.

“Maya, give me the envelope.””

She held it tighter.

“I’m scared.””

“I know.””

“No, Dad.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t.””

The basement light flickered above us.

For a moment, my daughter looked like a stranger.

Not because I didn’t recognize her.

Because I suddenly realized how much of her life I had missed.

“How did you get this?”” I asked.

She swallowed.

“Uncle Marcus gave it to me.””

My heart dropped.

“When?””

“Before he came here.””

“Why would he give you something instead of me?””

“Because he thought you wouldn’t believe him.””

The words cut deeper because they were true.

Three years ago, Marcus had tried to tell me something.

I had slammed the door in his face.

I had told him he was selfish.

That he only cared about himself.

I had believed my own anger more than my own brother.

“What’s inside?””

Maya looked at the envelope.

“The truth about Daniel.””

Before I could answer, Claire stepped into the basement.

“Maya.””

My wife looked terrified.

“Please don’t.””

Maya turned toward her.

“Why?””

Claire froze.

“Because you don’t understand.””

“No.””

Maya’s voice became stronger.

“I understand everything.””

Claire looked like she had been slapped.

“Maya…”

“You made me promise not to tell Dad.””

I looked at Claire.

“What?””

Maya’s eyes filled.

“Mom found out I knew.””

The room went silent.

I turned slowly.

“Claire?””

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By making our daughter lie?””

“I was trying to protect our family.””

I laughed quietly.

The sound scared even me.

“Our family?””

I pointed around the basement.

“All of this happened because everyone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””

Nobody answered.

Maya slowly handed me the envelope.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old one.

A hospital room.

Claire, much younger, holding a newborn baby.

Standing beside her was a man.

My breath stopped.

Because I knew him.

Not well.

But enough.

Enough to feel the world shift.

“Who is this?””

Claire whispered.

“Arthur…”

“Who is he?””

Maya looked at me.

“His name is Thomas Reed.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Claire spoke.

“He was your father’s business partner.””

I stared at her.

My father.

The man who died when I was twenty-four.

The man I had spent years trying to understand.

“What?””

Claire’s face collapsed.

“I never wanted you to know.””

“You had a child with my father’s business partner?””

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

“No, Arthur.””

She stepped forward.

“Thomas was not Daniel’s father.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Then why is he there?””

Nobody spoke.

I flipped the picture over.

A handwritten note was on the back.

Three words.

*He knows everything.*

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

This time from Marcus.

One location.

No explanation.

An abandoned warehouse address.

I looked at Claire.

“Where is Marcus?””

She went pale.

“I don’t know.””

I grabbed my jacket.

Maya stepped forward.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

“Dad.””

“No.””

She looked angry.

“I’m part of this.””

“You’re sixteen.””

“And I found the truth before you did.””

The words hurt because they were honest.

I looked at my daughter.

Then at the envelope.

Then at my wife.

A family built on secrets.

A brother missing.

A man threatening us.

And a truth that kept changing shape.

“Stay here,” I said.

Maya shook her head.

“You’re going to the warehouse.””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

She looked toward the photograph.

“Because Uncle Marcus sent me that location too.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

Maya whispered:

“Because he said if anything happened to him, we should find the man who started all of this.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She looked at the photograph.

At the man standing beside my father.

May you like

Then she said:

“Your father.””
