Chapter 2: The Brother Who Came Back

I opened the door because some part of me still believed that answers were better than silence.

That part of me was wrong.

Marcus stood on my porch, rain dripping from his jacket.

He looked older than I remembered.

Three years had changed him.

Or maybe I had finally started seeing him clearly.

“Arthur,” he said.

I didn’t step aside.

“What are you doing here?””

His eyes moved past me.

Toward the living room.

Toward Maya.

“Because you deserve the truth.””

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You said that three years ago.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“And you ignored me.””

“You destroyed my family.””

“No,” he said quietly.

“Someone else did.””

I gripped the door.

“Don’t come into my house and play games.””

Behind me, Claire appeared.

“Arthur?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Claire.””

She immediately stiffened.

“You need to leave.””

“I wish I could.””

The way he said it bothered me.

Because it sounded like he was afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

“You have five minutes.””

Marcus looked toward the folder in his hand.

“I have five minutes to explain why your son is innocent.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

He opened the folder.

Inside were printed photographs.

Documents.

Messages.

My hands tightened.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

He looked directly at me.

“That Maya wasn’t telling you about Jordan.””

The porch light flickered above us.

I felt the world tilt.

“Explain.””

Marcus handed me the first photograph.

It showed Maya standing outside a coffee shop.

Talking to a man.

A man I didn’t recognize.

“When was this?””

“Two weeks ago.””

I looked at him.

“You were following my daughter?””

“No.””

“Then how did you get this?””

“Because I was following him.””

The answer made no sense.

“Who is he?””

Marcus hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me more than anything else.

“His name is Daniel Cross.””

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

“Why should I care?””

“Because he’s the reason I came back.””

I looked down at the picture again.

Maya was smiling in the photograph.

Not scared.

Not upset.

Happy.

My stomach twisted.

“Is my daughter dating him?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I walked back toward the door.

“I think you’ve done enough damage.””

“Arthur.””

“No.””

I turned around.

“You don’t get to walk back into our lives after three years and pretend you’re saving us.””

Marcus looked at me sadly.

“I know what you think happened.””

“Because I saw it.””

“No,” he said.

“You saw what everyone wanted you to see.””

The words stopped me.

Everyone?

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, the front door opened.

Maya stepped outside.

“Uncle Marcus, stop.””

I looked at her.

“Maya.””

She shook her head.

“Please.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You need to tell him.””

“No.””

“You can’t protect him anymore.””

Her face turned pale.

“Protect him?””

I stared at my daughter.

“Who are you protecting?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was the answer.

I walked back inside.

The entire family gathered in the living room.

For the first time in twenty-two years of marriage, Claire looked like a stranger.

“Maya,” I said.

She sat down slowly.

“I met Daniel six months ago.””

Jordan crossed his arms.

“So?””

Maya looked at him.

“I didn’t know who he was.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

She swallowed.

“His last name.””

Nobody moved.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel Cross is your son.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“What?””

Claire grabbed the couch.

“Maya, what are you saying?””

My daughter started crying.

“I found out three months ago.””

Jordan stared at her.

“You’re saying Dad has another kid?””

I looked at Claire.

She looked away.

And that tiny movement destroyed me.

Because it told me something I didn’t want to believe.

I turned toward my wife.

“Claire?””

She whispered my name.

“Arthur…”

I took a step back.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No, you don’t get to say my name like that.””

The woman I had loved for twenty-seven years looked down.

And that was when I realized the truth.

This was bigger than Maya.

Bigger than Marcus.

Bigger than the accusation against Jordan.

My family wasn’t breaking apart because of one lie.

It was breaking apart because there had been a hidden life inside it.

I looked at Claire.

“Who is Daniel Cross?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

And then she said the one sentence I never expected to hear.

“Before I met you… I had a son.””

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared on the screen.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*Ask your wife what happened the night Daniel was born.*

May you like

I looked up.

And Claire went completely pale.
