Chapter 4: The File In The Basement

I drove home faster than I should have.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was terrified.

For the first time in my life, I understood something my children had known for weeks.

The truth could be dangerous.

When I entered the house, Claire was standing in the hallway.

She looked like she had been waiting.

“Where were you?””

I ignored the question.

“Where are the old documents?””

Her face changed.

“What documents?””

“The ones about Daniel.””

She went silent.

That silence was enough.

“Claire.””

She closed her eyes.

“Arthur, please.””

“Where?””

After a long moment, she whispered:

“The basement.””

I walked downstairs.

The old storage room smelled like dust and forgotten memories.

Boxes lined the walls.

Christmas decorations.

Old clothes.

Photo albums.

A lifetime of things we thought we needed.

Claire followed behind me.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

I turned.

“You never wanted the truth to happen.””

She looked away.

I searched through boxes until I found one labeled with her handwriting.

*Personal.*

Inside were old letters.

Photographs.

Medical papers.

And one envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Not my current name.

My full name.

Arthur James Bennett.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was not Claire’s.

It was Marcus’s.

My hands shook as I read.

*Arthur,*

*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.*

I stopped.

Claire covered her mouth.

I continued.

*The night Daniel was born was not what Claire told you. Ethan Cross was not the only person involved. Someone changed the records. Someone paid people to keep quiet.*

I looked up.

“Claire?””

She was crying.

“No.””

I kept reading.

*I spent years trying to find proof. When I finally did, Ethan disappeared. Then Claire begged me not to tell you because she said the truth would destroy everything.*

My heart pounded.

There was more.

One final line.

*Arthur, Daniel may be Claire’s son, but he is not Ethan’s.*

I stopped breathing.

The room went silent.

“What?””

Claire stepped forward.

“Arthur…”

I looked at her.

“No.””

She started crying.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She couldn’t answer.

I looked back at the letter.

The words blurred.

Daniel wasn’t Ethan’s son.

Then whose was he?

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“You finally found the file.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who knows who Daniel’s real father is.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where is Marcus?””

The man laughed quietly.

“That’s what you should be asking.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did you do to him?””

The voice lowered.

“Nothing yet.””

I heard movement in the background.

Then the man said:

“But if you want your brother alive, bring me the file.””

The call ended.

I looked down.

The basement door slowly creaked open behind me.

And standing there was Maya.

Holding another envelope.

“Dad…”

May you like

Her voice trembled.

“I know who Daniel’s father is.””
