Chapter 9: The Secret Beneath Our Name
For a moment, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The rain outside became louder, tapping against the windows like thousands of tiny fingers.
I stared at the person standing behind Jason.
My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
“Rachel?””
She stood frozen in the doorway.
Her face was empty.
Not scared.
Not angry.
Just broken.
I looked between her and Jason.
“What is this?””
Jason smiled.
A small, cruel smile.
“The problem with secrets, Emily, is that everyone thinks they’re protecting someone.””
My grip tightened around Lily’s letter.
“You followed me here?””
Jason ignored the question.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Frustration.
Like he was tired of pretending.
“Your sister was never supposed to find those documents.””
My voice shook.
“Why?””
“Because Lily had this ridiculous belief that the truth fixes everything.””
He laughed quietly.
“She thought exposing people would make the world better.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“She was right.””
“No.””
Jason stepped into the room.
“She was naive.””
My mother stood.
“Don’t talk about my daughter like that.””
Jason looked at her.
And something about that look made me understand.
He wasn’t afraid of my mother.
He was afraid of what she knew.
“You should have stopped her,” Jason said.
My mother’s face went pale.
“You threatened her.””
“No.””
“You did.””
Jason shook his head.
“No. I warned her.””
I felt sick.
“You’re admitting it?””
He looked at me.
“I’m admitting your sister was given every chance to walk away.””
My hands trembled.
“Walk away from what?””
Jason looked at the letter.
“From the truth about your family.””
Silence.
I turned toward my mother.
“Tell me.””
She looked away.
“Mom.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone said that.
Everyone used those words.
Protect.
Save.
Help.
But Lily was dead because people kept deciding what she was allowed to know.
“Tell me the truth.””
My mother sat down slowly.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“Then tell me what you knew.””
She stared at her hands.
“Twenty years ago, your grandfather’s company was involved in a fraud scheme.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Insurance fraud?””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Jason.
“And his family?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“His father was involved.””
Rachel whispered:
“My father too.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped forward.
“I didn’t know.””
My mother looked at her.
“Your father knew.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
“He told me himself.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
Rachel looked devastated.
“He said he regretted it.””
My mother gave a sad smile.
“Regret doesn’t erase what happened.””
Jason interrupted.
“And that’s where Lily made her mistake.””
I turned toward him.
“What mistake?””
“She thought the documents only exposed criminals.””
His voice became colder.
“She didn’t understand they exposed everyone.””
My father stood.
“Jason.””
“No.””
Jason looked at him.
“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent.””
My father said nothing.
Because he wasn’t.
Not completely.
Jason continued.
“Your father knew. Your mother knew. Rachel’s father knew.””
He pointed around the room.
“Everyone had blood on their hands.””
I hated that part of me understood.
Not forgiveness.
Not acceptance.
Just understanding.
Lily hadn’t been fighting one person.
She had been fighting a system of people protecting each other.
Daniel stepped forward.
“But Lily was going to expose Jason.””
Jason laughed.
“Of course she was.””
“Why?””
“Because she found the final piece.””
My heart stopped.
“What final piece?””
Jason looked at me.
“You.””
I froze.
“What?””
Jason walked closer.
“Your sister discovered that the fraud wasn’t just about money.””
My hands went cold.
“What was it about?””
Jason’s voice dropped.
“Identity.””
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
“Years ago, money was moved through fake accounts. Fake companies. Fake names.””
Daniel frowned.
“Where does Emily fit?””
Jason looked at my mother.
“She wasn’t supposed to know.””
My mother started crying.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Jason’s voice became sharp.
“She deserves to know.””
I stared at my mother.
“What is he talking about?””
She couldn’t answer.
So Jason did.
“Your mother changed one record.””
My breathing stopped.
“What record?””
“Your birth record.””
The room spun.
I laughed.
Because it was impossible.
Because it was too insane.
“No.””
Jason looked at me.
“Ask her.””
I looked at my mother.
She was crying.
And that was the answer.
“Mom?””
She covered her mouth.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“No, tell me he’s lying.””
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The words destroyed me.
“Why?””
She cried.
“Because I thought I was saving you.””
“Saving me from what?””
She looked at Jason.
“From the truth.””
Daniel slowly stepped forward.
“Emily…”
But I couldn’t hear him.
My entire life felt like it was cracking apart.
Jason spoke softly.
“You weren’t born into the Carter family.””
The room became silent.
“You were adopted.””
I stared.
“No.””
My mother whispered:
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
She reached toward me.
I moved away.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you were my daughter.””
“But I deserved to know.””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“I know.””
Jason watched.
Enjoying every second.
And that was when I understood.
He wasn’t telling me the truth because he cared.
He was destroying me because he wanted something.
“What do you want?””
Jason looked at me.
“The documents Lily found.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So this is why.””
“Yes.””
“You think I have them?””
“I know you do.””
I shook my head.
“You’re wrong.””
His expression changed.
“Then why did Lily hide them with you?””
I froze.
“What?””
Jason smiled.
“Because she trusted you more than anyone.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Jason, you need to leave.””
But Jason ignored him.
“She knew the truth about your birth.””
My heart pounded.
“And?””
“She knew the documents could destroy the people who raised you.””
He leaned closer.
“She also knew they could destroy you.””
I looked at Lily’s letter.
The final line.
The person who caused my death is the person who taught him how.
Not Jason.
Someone else.
Someone who created him.
Someone who showed him how to manipulate.
I looked at my mother.
“Who taught him?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel spoke.
Her voice barely audible.
“His father.””
Jason’s face changed.
For the first time.
Real anger.
Rachel continued.
“Your father taught Jason everything.””
Jason turned.
“Don’t.””
But Rachel kept going.
“He taught him how to hide money.””
She looked at me.
“How to control people.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“And how to make someone disappear without leaving evidence.””
Jason stepped toward her.
“Rachel.””
She flinched.
And that was enough.
Because I finally saw it.
She wasn’t his partner.
She was his victim too.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His face changed.
“What?””
A pause.
“Are you sure?””
He looked at me.
Then everyone else.
“The police found the missing documents.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
Daniel swallowed.
“They were never hidden in the house.””
“Then where?””
He looked at Jason.
“They were found in Jason Reed’s office.””
Jason’s face went completely blank.
May you like
And for the first time…
He looked afraid.
