Chapter 4: The Name Lily Hid
I drove straight to Daniel’s office.
I didn’t remember half the journey.
My mind kept replaying Rachel’s words.
Jason didn’t push your sister.
But he knows who did.
Those words should have made me feel better.
They didn’t.
Because if Jason knew the truth and stayed silent, then he wasn’t innocent.
He was protecting someone.
Daniel opened the door before I knocked.
“You heard from Rachel.””
I stopped.
“How did you know?””
“Because she contacted me too.””
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
“She wanted to speak to you first.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of Jason?””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I walked inside.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel sat down.
“Rachel was involved with Jason.””
My stomach dropped.
“So Lily was right.””
“Yes.””
“Then why is she helping me?””
“Because Rachel realized Jason was never planning a future with her.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel handed me another file.
Inside were printed messages.
Jason and Rachel.
Promises.
Plans.
Lies.
Then one message caught my attention.
After Lily is gone, we can finally move forward.
I stopped breathing.
The date was one week before Lily died.
I looked at Daniel.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
“She knew they wanted her gone.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she leave?””
Daniel’s face softened.
“Because Lily discovered something bigger.””
He pulled out another document.
A bank record.
“This is where everything changes.””
I looked at the name.
Jason Reed.
A large transfer.
From a life insurance account.
My hands shook.
“He planned this?””
“We don’t know yet.””
“But Lily did.””
Daniel nodded.
“She found the transfer before it happened.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone was preparing for her death.””
The room felt smaller.
I thought about Lily’s final months.
The baby clothes.
The nursery.
The little notes.
She wasn’t preparing to die.
She was preparing to survive.
Until someone took that choice away.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Rachel.
There’s something you need to see.
A video was attached.
I played it.
The screen showed a dark hallway.
A security camera.
A date.
The night Lily died.
My hands covered my mouth.
At first, nothing happened.
Then a figure appeared.
A person walking toward the stairs.
I couldn’t see the face.
But I saw enough.
The person stopped.
Looked around.
Then placed something near the staircase.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Pause it.””
I did.
He pointed.
“Zoom in.””
The image became blurry.
But there was one detail.
A ring.
On the person’s hand.
A silver ring with a black stone.
I knew that ring.
I had seen it hundreds of times.
Jason wore it every day.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily…”
“No.””
Because I remembered something.
Something Lily had said.
Two days before she died.
She had held my hand and whispered:
“If anything happens to me, don’t trust the person who says they loved me the most.””
I thought she meant Jason.
I was wrong.
Because the video wasn’t showing who killed Lily.
It was showing who helped hide it.
Then the office door suddenly opened.
Both Daniel and I turned.
A woman stood there.
Rachel.
Her face was pale.
And in her hand was a small envelope.
“I know who was on the stairs,” she said.
Daniel stood.
“How did you get in here?””
Rachel ignored him.
She looked directly at me.
“Emily, your sister wasn’t trying to expose Jason.””
My heart raced.
“Then who?””
Rachel held out the envelope.
“Lily was trying to expose me.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“She found out what I did before I ever met Jason.””
The envelope shook in her hand.
“And she was going to tell you the truth.””
I reached for it.
But before my fingers touched the paper, Rachel whispered:
“The woman who caused Lily’s death wasn’t a stranger.””
A pause.
“She was someone Lily trusted.””
I opened the envelope.
And inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Lily.
Rachel.
And me.
Taken years earlier.
Before Jason.
Before the marriage.
Before everything fell apart.

On the back, Lily had written one sentence:
The person who destroyed my life has been standing beside me all along.
