Chapter 5: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The photograph felt heavier than paper.

I stared at the three faces smiling back at me.

Lily.

Rachel.

Me.

A memory from ten years ago.

A summer afternoon.

A cheap camera.

Three girls who thought they understood friendship.

Three girls who believed the worst thing that could happen was growing apart.

I turned the photograph over again.

The words Lily wrote on the back were burned into my mind.

The person who destroyed my life has been standing beside me all along.

My fingers tightened around the picture.

I looked at Rachel.

“Explain.””

Her face was pale.

“I know how this looks.””

“No,” I said.

My voice surprised even me.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Rachel swallowed.

“Emily—”

“You walked into my sister’s funeral with her husband. You stood beside him while everyone buried Lily. Then you tell me Lily was right about you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t kill her.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Rachel looked down.

“I know.””

Daniel stepped between us slightly.

“Rachel, you need to tell us everything.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she sat down.

For the first time, she didn’t look like the confident woman who had entered the church holding Jason’s arm.

She looked terrified.

“Lily and I weren’t just acquaintances.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked at the photograph.

“We were friends before Jason.””

The room went silent.

I felt something shift inside me.

“Friends?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Lily never mention you?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Because she hated me.””

The words landed like a stone.

“Why?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Because years ago, I betrayed her.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“What kind of betrayal?””

Rachel looked at me.

“The kind that changes someone’s entire life.””

I waited.

She didn’t speak immediately.

And I hated that.

I hated that every person connected to Lily seemed to be holding pieces of her story while I had been left with nothing.

Finally, Rachel whispered:

“Before Jason, before the marriage, before any of this… Lily was supposed to leave Willow Creek.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She got accepted into a nursing program in Austin.””

I knew about that.

At least, I thought I did.

Lily had mentioned wanting a fresh start after college.

“She never went,” I said.

Rachel nodded.

“Because of me.””

The room became colder.

“What did you do?””

Rachel looked away.

“I told her fiancé she was cheating.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“It was a lie.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Why would you do that?””

“Because I was jealous.””

The honesty was almost worse.

Rachel continued.

“I loved him.””

“Lily’s fiancé?””

She nodded.

“Ethan.””

I remembered Ethan.

A kind man.

Funny.

The first person who made Lily smile after our grandmother died.

“He left her because of you?””

Rachel nodded.

“She lost everything.””

My hands shook.

“And you just stayed friends with her?””

“No.””

Rachel looked at the floor.

“She cut me out.””

“Then why were you back in her life?””

“Because Jason brought me back.””

That sentence made me look up.

“What?””

Rachel rubbed her hands together.

“Jason knew about me.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“How?””

“Because Lily told him.””

A sick feeling settled in my stomach.

Rachel continued.

“When Jason started working at my company, he recognized my name. He knew I had history with Lily.””

“And?””

“And he used it.””

The room went silent.

“He told me Lily had forgiven me. He said she wanted to reconnect.””

I stared.

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice cracked.

“She never contacted me.””

“Then why did you believe him?””

“Because I wanted to.””

That answer was painfully human.

And somehow that made it worse.

Rachel looked at me.

“I thought maybe Lily had finally forgiven me. I thought maybe I could fix what I broke.””

Daniel shook his head.

“But Jason had another reason for bringing you close.””

Rachel nodded.

“He wanted someone who could make Lily doubt herself.””

My stomach turned.

“Gaslighting.””

“Yes.””

The word hung in the air.

I thought about all the times Lily had apologized for things that weren’t her fault.

All the times she questioned her own memories.

All the times she said Jason was “just stressed.””

Rachel reached into her bag.

“I have more.””

She placed another phone on the table.

“This belonged to Jason.””

My eyes widened.

“Why do you have his phone?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“Because he gave it to me.””

“Why?””

“He wanted me to delete something.””

Daniel immediately reached for it.

“What?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Messages between him and the person who planned everything.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“Who?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Instead, she unlocked the phone.

The screen showed one conversation.

No saved name.

Just a number.

The first message was dated two days before Lily died.

Jason:

She knows too much.

The reply:

Then make sure she can’t talk.

I covered my mouth.

Daniel scrolled.

More messages.

Jason:

I can’t do this.

The reply:

You already started.

Then another.

Jason:

What if Emily finds out?

The reply:

She won’t. She trusts you.

My entire body froze.

My name.

They were talking about me.

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“Who is the number?””

Rachel whispered:

“I don’t know.””

I stared at the screen.

“No.””

Because I knew.

I knew that writing style.

I knew the way they used short sentences.

I knew the coldness.

The person behind the messages wasn’t just someone who knew Lily.

It was someone who knew all of us.

Someone who had been close enough to know exactly where to hurt.

I grabbed the phone.

The latest message was unopened.

Sent the morning after Lily’s funeral.

I clicked it.

My blood turned cold.

The message said:

Jason failed.

Now Emily has the box.

Handle her.

The room went silent.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed almost immediately.

“What?””

A pause.

“No.””

Another pause.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily…”

I stood.

“What happened?””

Daniel lowered the phone.

“The police just found Rachel’s car.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Where?””

He looked at Rachel.

“She was supposed to drive here.””

Rachel went pale.

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Because someone attacked the person who was supposed to protect you.””

I froze.

“Who?””

May you like

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father.””
