Chapter 8: The Storage Unit

The storage unit was twenty miles outside the city.

I almost didn’t go.

Almost.

Because part of me wanted to believe there was another explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake.

Anything.

But every road led back to the same place.

Vanessa.

When I arrived, the rain had started.

The kind of rain that made the entire world look blurred.

The storage facility manager checked the key.

“Unit 214.””

“Who rented it?””

He looked at his computer.

“Vanessa Carter.””

My stomach tightened.

“How long?””

“Three years.””

Three years.

Since before Laura died.

I walked to the unit.

The lock opened easily.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Not random boxes.

Organized.

Labeled.

The first one said:

EMILY.

My hands shook.

I opened it.

Inside were drawings.

School papers.

Photographs.

Every birthday.

Every award.

Every little moment.

But then I noticed something.

Some photos had been altered.

Laura was cut out.

Family pictures changed.

Just Vanessa and Emily remained.

I opened another box.

This one said:

DANIEL.

Inside were documents.

Emails.

Notes.

Things about me.

My habits.

My weaknesses.

My schedule.

My relationship with Emily.

This wasn’t a memory box.

It was a file.

A study.

A plan.

Then I found the final box.

No label.

Only a date.

The date Laura died.

Inside was a small recorder.

Not broken.

Not damaged.

A second recorder.

I pressed play.

Laura’s voice filled the storage unit.

“Daniel, if this is playing, Vanessa found a way to control the story.””

I froze.

The rain hit the metal roof above me.

Laura continued.

“I need you to understand something. Vanessa did not become close to us after my illness.””

A pause.

“She was already watching.””

My hands went cold.

“Daniel, I was wrong about one thing.””

Another pause.

“I thought she wanted to replace me.””

The recording crackled.

“She doesn’t.””

I held my breath.

“She wants to replace you.””

The sound disappeared.

Then returned.

Laura whispered:

“If anything happens to me, protect Emily from her.””

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The residential program.

The fake signatures.

The recordings.

The custody documents.

Vanessa wasn’t trying to remove Emily from my life.

She was trying to make herself the only safe person left.

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I stared at the screen.

Then answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I could ask you the same thing.””

“How did you know?””

“Because you were never as careful as you thought.””

I looked around the storage unit.

“Did you know about this?””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

“You knew Laura left this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you destroy it?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I knew you would eventually find it.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“I needed you to find it.””

I stepped back.

“Why?””

Her voice softened.

“Because now you finally understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That Laura was always going to choose herself over Emily.””

I gripped the phone.

“You’re still doing this?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No. You’re telling me your version.””

A quiet laugh.

“Daniel.””

The way she said my name made me uncomfortable.

“You still don’t know what happened that night.””

“What night?””

“The night Laura died.””

My heartbeat changed.

“Tell me.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“Ask yourself why Laura recorded that message but never sent it.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then at the recorder in my hand.

Because Vanessa was right about one thing.

Laura had recorded the message.

But she had never given it to me.

Which meant there was still one missing piece.

One thing Laura knew.

One thing she never told me.

And when I turned the recorder over, I saw a small engraving on the back.

A date.

And four words.

May you like

Not for Daniel.

For Emily only.
