Chapter 3: The Name Emily Whispered

I spent the next hour staring at that name.

Sarah.

A name that meant nothing to me.

But everything to my daughter.

When Emily came downstairs, she was carrying her stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit Laura gave her before her first day of kindergarten.

She stopped when she saw my face.

“Daddy?””

I knelt.

“Emily, sweetheart, who is Sarah?””

The color disappeared from her face.

She looked toward the stairs.

Toward Vanessa.

And whispered:

“I’m not supposed to tell.””

My heart broke.

“Who told you that?””

Emily squeezed the rabbit.

“Nobody.””

“Emily.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She said if I told you, you would be angry.””

“Who said that?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Vanessa.””

I felt something inside me go completely still.

I sat beside my daughter.

“You can tell me anything.””

“She said Mommy left because she was tired of me.””

The room stopped.

“What?””

Emily started crying.

“She said if Mommy really loved me, she would have stayed.””

I could barely breathe.

“Emily, that is not true.””

“She said maybe that’s why Mommy got sick.””

My hands shook.

Because Laura’s death had always been painful.

But never suspicious.

Laura had been sick for months.

Everyone told me there was nothing anyone could have done.

But now I was looking at my daughter.

A child who had been carrying words she never should have heard.

“Who is Sarah?””

Emily wiped her face.

“She used to come here.””

“When?””

“Before you married Vanessa.””

I froze.

“What?””

Emily looked confused.

“No, Daddy. After.””

After.

My mind raced.

Laura died three years ago.

I married Vanessa two years later.

There was no Sarah.

No woman.

No connection.

Unless—

“Emily, what did Sarah do?””

My daughter lowered her voice.

“She helped Mommy.””

I stared at her.

“Helped Mommy with what?””

“She was the lady from the hospital.””

My heartbeat changed.

The hospital.

Laura’s final weeks.

I had spent most nights beside my wife’s bed.

But there were moments.

Moments when Vanessa told me to go home.

Moments when she said Laura needed rest.

I remembered thinking she was being kind.

Protective.

Now I wondered.

“What did Sarah look like?””

Emily thought.

“She had red hair.””

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Sarah Whitmore.””

The room went silent.

I stood.

“How do you know my name?””

“I know because I knew your wife.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Laura?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Emily.

She was watching me.

“Where are you?””

“I have been trying to reach you for months.””

“Why?””

A shaky breath came through the speaker.

“Because Vanessa found out I kept copies.””

“Copies of what?””

“Laura’s records.””

My chest tightened.

“What records?””

The woman lowered her voice.

“Daniel, before Laura died, she asked me to protect Emily.””

I could not speak.

“Protect her from what?””

There was a pause.

Then Sarah said:

“From the person who would raise her after Laura was gone.””

The line went quiet.

I looked toward the staircase.

Vanessa was standing there.

Watching me.

She had heard enough.

“Who are you talking to?””

I ended the call.

Not because I wanted to.

Because Vanessa’s expression told me something.

May you like

She knew exactly who Sarah was.

And she was afraid.
