Chapter 7: The Message Laura Left
Emily ran into my arms.
I caught her.
But I couldn’t stop looking at Vanessa.
Because she wasn’t surprised.
That was the worst part.
She already knew.
“What did you show her?”” I asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“What did you send my daughter?””
“It wasn’t meant to hurt her.””
“Answer me.””
Her expression hardened.
“It was the truth.””
Emily buried her face into my chest.
“I don’t want to hear it again.””
Again.
The word stayed in my mind.
“How many times did she hear it?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Emily misunderstood.””
I held my daughter tighter.
“What was in the recording?””
Vanessa said nothing.
So I called Sarah back.
“Send me everything you have.””
“I’m trying.””
“Now.””
A minute later, my phone buzzed.
A file.
Audio recording.
No name.
Just a date.
The night Laura died.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then breathing.
Then Laura’s voice.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
“Emily?””
My eyes filled immediately.
Emily grabbed my hand.
“Mommy.””
Laura continued.
“My brave girl. If you are hearing this, I need you to know something.””
A pause.
“I never left because I wanted to.””
Emily started crying.
I held her.
“I never stopped loving you.””
The recording shook.
Like Laura had moved the device.
Then another voice appeared.
Vanessa.
My blood turned cold.
“Laura, you need to rest.””
Laura sounded scared.
“No.””
A pause.
“You promised.””
Vanessa’s voice became softer.
“You’re confused.””
“No.””
Laura coughed.
“You’re trying to make her forget me.””
I stopped breathing.
Then Vanessa said something that made my entire body go numb.
“She needs someone who can actually be here.””
The recording ended.
I looked at Emily.
She was crying silently.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What did you do?””
Her face was pale.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I understand enough.””
She shook her head.
“Daniel, Laura was sick.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“But you use it like an excuse.””
She looked angry now.
“I loved Emily.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You loved being needed.””
That hit her.
Hard.
For a second, her mask disappeared.
And I saw something underneath.
Possession.
Not love.
Possession.
The next morning, child protective services arrived.
Not because I called them.
Because Vanessa did.
She had filed a report claiming I was emotionally unstable after discovering “disturbing evidence” about Emily’s behavior.
She had prepared for this.
Of course she had.
The caseworker, Rachel, sat across from me.
“Mr. Carter, we need to understand what happened.””
I handed over everything.
The forged papers.
The recordings.
The photos.
The messages.
Rachel listened carefully.
Then she looked at me.
“Did Vanessa ever threaten you?””
I thought about it.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“When she told me I would regret choosing my daughter.””
Rachel wrote that down.
Then she looked toward Emily.
My daughter was sitting quietly, drawing.
“What is she drawing?””
I glanced over.
A house.
Three people.
Me.
Emily.
Laura.
But there was another person.
A woman standing outside the house.
“Who is that?”” Rachel asked gently.
Emily stopped drawing.
Then whispered:
“That’s Vanessa.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Why is she outside?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Mommy said she was already trying to get in.””
That night, after Rachel left, I went through Laura’s old belongings.
Every letter.
Every photo.
Every box.
Until I found something hidden beneath the bottom of her memory box.
A small envelope.
My name.
Daniel.
Inside was one sentence.
And a key.
The sentence said:
The truth about Vanessa is not in my house.
It is somewhere she cannot control.
The key had a number engraved on it.
A storage unit number.
And below that was a location.
May you like
A place I recognized.
Because it belonged to Vanessa’s family.
