Chapter 4: My Mother-in-Law Knew It Would Happen

For several seconds after Linda hung up, I couldn't move.

Your daughter wasn't supposed to be there when Megan lost control.

The sentence kept repeating in my head.

Not Megan made a mistake.

Not I'm sorry Lily was hurt.

Linda had spoken as though my daughter's presence had been an inconvenience, as though a five-year-old girl had accidentally walked into a situation that adults had arranged without her knowledge.

I replayed the call recording I'd started automatically when Linda's name appeared on my screen. Her voice sounded calm, almost affectionate, until I asked what she meant.

Then came the silence.

The carefully chosen words.

The abrupt disconnection.

I turned toward Zoe.

"She knew something was going to happen.""

Zoe stood beside the kitchen counter, staring at the photograph of Mark and Linda in the office.

"We don't know that for certain.""

"She just told me Lily wasn't supposed to be there when Megan lost control.""

"Then we need to find out what she meant.""

I picked up my coat.

"Let's go.""

Zoe caught my wrist.

"Chloe, listen to me. If we walk into that house without knowing what we're looking for, they'll turn this around on us. They'll say you're emotional.

They'll say you assaulted Megan. They'll say you're trying to steal Lily away from her family because you're angry.""

"They can say whatever they want.""

"And they'll use every word against you if there's a custody dispute.""

That stopped me.

Upstairs, Lily stirred in her sleep. I heard the faint creak of her bed, followed by the soft thud of her stuffed rabbit hitting the floor.

I looked toward the staircase.

Zoe was right about one thing.

I couldn't afford to make another decision without thinking about how it might affect my daughter.

"Then we do it your way," I said.

"But we're getting answers.""

At nine thirty that morning, my phone rang again.

This time, it was Mark.

I let it ring twice before answering.

"Where's Lily?"" he asked.

Not hello.

Not are you okay?

Not how is her cheek?

"She's safe.""

"I want to see her.""

"Why?""

A sharp breath came through the speaker.

"Because I'm her father, Chloe.""

"Then you should have acted like one last night.""

He was quiet.

I could picture him in our bedroom, standing beside the bed with one hand pressed against his forehead. He always did that when he was trying to control a conversation.

"Can we please talk without attacking each other?"" he asked.

"You can start by telling me why your mother thinks Lily wasn't supposed to be there when Megan lost control.""

The silence was immediate.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Mark?""

"She said that?""

"Yes.""

"Exactly what did she say?""

I laughed without humor.

"You're asking me to repeat it because you already know what it means.""

"No, Chloe. I need to understand what she's told you.""

"What did you do on Christmas night?""

He exhaled.

"I told you. I deleted the footage.""

"Why?""

"Because Megan was going through something terrible, and I thought I could handle it privately.""

"By hiding evidence that she hurt our daughter?""

"I was trying to keep the family together.""

"Which family, Mark? Yours? Because you left mine standing in the cold last night.""

He didn't answer.

I heard a door close on his end.

Then his voice lowered.

"Chloe, I need you to understand something. My mother has been making decisions for this family for a very long time. Sometimes she says things she doesn't mean.""

"She sounded perfectly clear to me.""

"Please don't confront her.""

That was the second time he'd asked me not to confront someone.

I was beginning to understand how his family operated. Nobody said what they meant. Nobody admitted what they'd done. They simply moved the truth around until it became inconvenient to remember.

"Tell me what happened to Lily on Christmas," I said.

"I can't.""

"Then don't call me again until you can.""

I ended the call.

Zoe had heard every word.

"He knows something," she said.

"He knows everything.""

"Maybe not everything.""

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?""

She picked up the printed email again.

"Look at the timestamp. Mark deleted the footage at 8:43 p.m. But this photograph was taken at 8:44. Someone was still recording him after he started deleting files.""

I stared at the picture.

"Meaning?""

"Meaning the person who took this photograph may have another copy of the original video.""

My pulse quickened.

"The anonymous sender.""

"Possibly.""

I typed a message.

*Chloe:* You said someone tried to protect Lily. Who was it?

The response didn't come.

We waited twenty minutes.

Then forty.

By the time noon arrived, I had checked my phone so often that my fingers ached.

Finally, a reply appeared.

*Unknown:* Someone who worked for your mother-in-law. Someone she blamed when the footage disappeared.

A second message followed.

*Unknown:* Her name is Denise Carter. She used to be Linda's housekeeper.

I knew the name.

Denise had worked at Linda's house for nearly eight years. She was a quiet woman in her fifties who always remembered Lily's favorite cookies and kept spare coloring books in a kitchen drawer for when we visited.

She had stopped working for Linda early in the year.

Linda told everyone Denise had moved away to care for her sister.

I'd never questioned it.

"Zoe," I said slowly, "do you remember Denise?""

"Of course. Why?""

I showed her the messages.

Zoe's expression changed.

"She disappeared from the family after Christmas.""

"Linda said she moved.""

"Did she?""

I searched my messages for Denise's number.

I found it buried beneath old holiday greetings and photographs.

My last message to her was from January.

Hope you're doing well, Denise. Lily keeps asking when she'll see you again.

Denise had replied with a heart and a short message.

I miss that sweet girl. Keep her close, Chloe.

At the time, I'd thought it was simply a sentimental goodbye.

Now the words made my stomach turn.

I called the number.

It rang six times before going to voicemail.

I tried again.

Nothing.

Then I sent a message.

Denise, it's Chloe. I need to talk to you about what happened at Linda's house on Christmas. Please, I need to know the truth about Lily.

The message showed as delivered.

No reply came.

I looked at Zoe.

"We're finding her.""

We started with the address Linda had given us when Denise first began working for her. It was an apartment in Evanston, about half an hour north of Chicago.

When we arrived, a young man answered the door.

He looked at us suspiciously.

"Can I help you?""

"I'm looking for Denise Carter," I said.

"I'm an old family friend.""

He shook his head.

"She doesn't live here anymore.""

"Do you know where she went?""

"No.""

He began closing the door.

I stopped him with a question.

"Did something happen to her?""

He hesitated.

Then he looked over his shoulder toward the apartment.

"My mother told me not to talk about it.""

My heart thudded.

"Your mother is Denise?""

He nodded.

I stepped back, careful not to crowd him.

"Please. My daughter was hurt at Linda Whitmore's house on Christmas. I think your mother may know what happened.""

His face changed.

He opened the door a little wider.

"You're Lily's mother?""

"Yes.""

He swallowed.

"My mother used to talk about your little girl all the time.""

"Can I speak to her?""

"She's not here. She went to stay with my aunt in Milwaukee after she lost her job.""

"Do you have her number?""

He hesitated again.

Then he reached for his phone.

"I'll text it to you. But please don't tell her I gave it to you. She's frightened of that family.""

"Why?""

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Because they told her she'd go to jail if she ever talked about what happened to your daughter.""

My mouth went dry.

He closed the door before I could ask anything else.

Outside, Zoe grabbed my arm.

"They threatened her.""

I stared at the address on my phone.

"Then she knows what happened.""

We drove back toward the city.

Halfway there, my phone rang.

The number was unfamiliar, but I answered immediately.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice whispered, "Chloe?""

"Denise?""

There was a pause.

"Yes.""

I gripped the phone.

"Please tell me what happened to Lily on Christmas.""

I heard her breathing shakily.

"Are you alone?""

"I'm with my sister.""

"Is your daughter safe?""

"She's with someone I trust.""

Denise exhaled.

"Thank God.""

I nearly cried at the relief in her voice.

"What did you see?""

"I saw Megan take Lily into the hallway. I followed because your daughter was crying.""

"What happened next?""

"Megan told her to stop being selfish. Lily was holding a present she'd opened early. She wanted to show everyone the unicorn inside.""

I closed my eyes.

I remembered the unicorn. Lily had carried it everywhere until the stuffing began to come out of one ear.

"What did Megan do?""

"She took it from her. Then she grabbed Lily's arm and pushed her against the wall.""

Zoe covered her mouth.

I struggled to breathe.

"Did she hit her?""

"Not with an open hand. She shoved her hard enough that Lily fell against the table. Your daughter started crying, and Megan told her she'd better stop before she ruined Christmas for everyone.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I tried.""

The words were so quiet that I almost didn't hear them.

"What?""

"I called Mark that night. I told him what I'd seen. He said he'd handle it.""

My stomach dropped.

"And then?""

"He came to the kitchen. Linda was with him. They told me I had misunderstood the situation. They said Megan had only been trying to stop Lily from breaking something.""

"That's a lie.""

"I know.""

Her voice cracked.

"I told them I wasn't going to lie about a child being hurt. Then Mark asked me to show him where the camera recording was stored.""

I stared at Zoe.

"He knew where it was.""

"Yes," Denise whispered.

"He went into the office with Linda. When he came out, he told me the matter was settled.""

"What happened to the footage?""

"I don't know exactly. But before I left that night, I heard Linda tell Mark to make sure nobody could use it against Megan.""

I felt sick.

"Did you see the missing thirty seconds?""

Denise went silent.

Then she said, "Yes.""

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"What happened?""

"I didn't see all of it. I was in the hallway when Mark came out of the office. He had his phone in his hand, and he looked frightened. Linda followed him and said something I will never forget.""

"What?""

Denise took a shaky breath.

"She said, 'If Chloe ever finds out what Lily saw, she'll take that child and destroy everything we've built.''"

The road outside the car seemed to blur.

"What did Lily see?""

"I don't know, Chloe. I swear I don't. But it wasn't just about Megan hurting her.""

I stared at Zoe.

She had gone completely still.

"Denise," I whispered, "what else happened that night?""

The woman began to cry.

"I should have done more. I should have called you. I should have taken Lily out of that house myself.""

"You can't change what happened. Just tell me the truth.""

There was a long pause.

Then Denise spoke again.

"Before Christmas dinner, I overheard Linda arguing with Mark about the trust your husband's father left for Lily.""

My breath caught.

"They were arguing about money?""

"Not only money. Linda said the guardianship documents had to be signed before Lily's sixth birthday.""

I looked at Zoe.

Lily's sixth birthday was only a few months away.

"Why?""

"I don't know. But I heard Mark say he wouldn't let his mother take Lily away from you.""

My blood ran cold.

Then Denise added the words that changed everything.

"And Linda told him that if he didn't cooperate, she would tell you what he had done before you married him.""

The call ended abruptly.

I stared at my phone.

Zoe reached across the console.

"Chloe?""

I couldn't answer.

Mark had hidden the Christmas footage.

Linda had helped him.

They had both been discussing Lily's trust and guardianship.

But Denise's final words suggested there was something else—something that had happened before our wedding.

Something Mark had been terrified of revealing.

And if Linda had been using it to control him for years, it might explain why he had allowed his family to treat our daughter as though she belonged to them.

My phone vibrated.

A new message from Denise appeared.

*Denise:* I'm sorry. I forgot to tell you something important.

Another message followed.

*Denise:* Lily wasn't the only person Linda wanted to silence that night.

Then a final message arrived.

*Denise:* Mark's father had left a letter for you before he died. Linda told everyone it was destroyed.

I stared at the screen.

Mark's father had died two years before Lily was born.

I'd never heard of any letter.

May you like

But Denise had.

And somewhere, apparently, a message from my husband's dead father was waiting to expose the truth.
