Chapter 2: The Video Hidden for Eleven Months
Zoe arrived seventeen minutes later.
I knew it was her car before I saw her face. She pulled into the space beside mine, left the engine running, and hurried toward my passenger door carrying a thick gray coat over her pajamas.
She opened the door and climbed in.
“Where's Lily?””
“Asleep.””
My daughter had finally drifted off with her rabbit tucked beneath her chin, exhausted from crying. The red mark on her cheek was still visible beneath the parking lot lights.
Zoe looked at her through the gap between the seats.
Her expression changed.
“Oh, Chloe.””
She reached back and gently touched Lily's foot.
Then she turned toward me.
“Show me.””
I stared at her.
“Show you what?””
“Her cheek.””
I pulled up the photograph I'd taken while Lily slept. I had wanted a record of the injury in case Mark or his family tried to convince me that I was exaggerating.
Zoe looked at the picture for several seconds.
Then she handed the phone back.
“I want to go to the police.””
“I'm going to deal with that. First, tell me what you meant about the recording.””
Zoe glanced toward the dark road beyond the windshield.
“Do you remember last Christmas?””
I frowned.
“Of course.””
“You and Mark went to his parents' house for dinner. I couldn't go because I was working.””
I nodded slowly.
“What does that have to do with tonight?””
“Three days later, Mark came to my apartment.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
“He said he needed to talk to me privately. He looked awful, Chloe. He was sweating, and he kept checking his phone like someone was tracking him.””
My chest tightened.
“What did he say?””
Zoe folded her hands in her lap.
“He asked whether I still had the video from the family security system at Linda's house.””
I stared at her.
“Linda has cameras?””
“Several. One in the living room, one covering the back hallway, and one facing the kitchen entrance. She installed them after someone stole a package from her porch.””
I remembered Linda bragging about the cameras during a summer barbecue.
She had called them a necessary precaution.
“Why would Mark ask you about footage from his mother's house?””
“Because I used to help Linda organize her security recordings. She hated dealing with the app, so she gave me access.””
Zoe paused.
“During Christmas dinner, I received an alert that someone had fallen in the hallway. I opened the recording because I thought Linda might have been hurt.””
My mouth went dry.
“What did you see?””
Zoe looked directly at me.
“I saw Megan grab Lily by the arm.””
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
“That can't be right.””
“I wish it weren't.””
“Lily was barely four last Christmas.””
“I know.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Zoe's face crumpled.
“Because Mark begged me not to.””
I stared at her in disbelief.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
The word was so quiet I almost missed it.
Zoe pulled her phone from her coat pocket. Her fingers trembled as she unlocked it.
“I kept the original file because I didn't trust Mark's reaction. I made a backup, too.””
She opened a folder and turned the screen toward me.
A thumbnail showed Linda's hallway, empty except for a decorative table and a framed family photograph.
The timestamp read December 25, 2025.
“Watch it,” Zoe said.
I pressed play.
The video had no sound at first. Megan entered the hallway carrying a glass of wine. Lily followed her, holding a small wrapped present.
My daughter was wearing the red velvet dress I'd bought for Christmas.
I remembered that dress. She'd insisted on wearing it for three days afterward because she loved the little gold buttons.
On the recording, Lily tugged gently at Megan's sleeve.
Megan turned.
Even without sound, I could see the irritation on her face.
She pointed toward the living room, then seized Lily's wrist and pulled her toward the wall.
Lily stumbled.
Megan leaned down and said something.
My daughter shook her head.
Then Megan pushed her into the corner beside the decorative table.
I stopped breathing.
Lily's little hands flew up defensively.
Megan grabbed the present and tossed it onto the floor.
The box split open.
A stuffed unicorn rolled across the hardwood.
My daughter bent to retrieve it.
Megan shoved her shoulder.
Lily fell against the wall.
I slapped a hand over my mouth.
“Stop it.””
Zoe paused the video.
“Chloe—”
“Stop it.””
She turned the phone facedown.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then I whispered, “Did she hurt her?””
“I don't know. The next thirty seconds are missing.””
“What?””
“The recording jumps forward. I think someone deleted part of the file before I accessed it.””
I looked at Zoe.
“And Mark saw this?””
“He watched the entire thing at my apartment. He sat right there on my couch and cried.””
The image of my husband crying over our daughter should have comforted me.
Instead, it made me furious.
“What did he say?””
Zoe rubbed her palms against her jeans.
“He said Megan had been drinking. He said she was under a lot of pressure because of her divorce. He told me she would never do anything like that again.””
“And you believed him?””
“I wanted to.””
She looked down.
“Then he asked me not to tell you.””
My throat tightened.
“What exactly did he say?””
Zoe hesitated.
“Chloe, I need you to understand that I didn't agree immediately. I told him you had a right to know. He said telling you would destroy your marriage and put Lily through a custody battle.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“So he protected Megan to protect himself.””
“I think he was scared.””
“Of what?””
Zoe shook her head.
“I don't know.””
I looked at the sleeping child in the back seat.
My daughter had been alone with Megan at Christmas. I remembered leaving her in the living room while I helped Linda carry dishes into the kitchen.
I remembered asking Mark to check on her.
He had told me she was playing happily.
I had trusted him.
“What happened after you watched the video?”” I asked.
“Mark promised he would tell you himself.””
“When?””
“He said he needed time to figure out how to explain it.””
I laughed again, but there was no humor in it.
“Eleven months, Zoe. He needed eleven months.””
“He kept asking whether I still had the file. Last month, he came to my apartment again. He said Linda's insurance company was reviewing their security system after a break-in on the street.””
I turned sharply.
“Why would an insurance company care about a video of Megan hurting Lily?””
“That's what I asked him.””
“What did he say?””
“He said he needed the footage deleted before anyone saw it.””
The parking lot seemed to grow colder.
“And you refused?””
“Yes.””
I studied my sister's face.
“Why didn't you tell me then?””
“Because I was stupid enough to think he'd finally do the right thing. I thought he was going to confront Megan. I thought he'd come home and tell you everything.””
Zoe swallowed hard.
“Tonight, when you called me, I realized he never would.””
I leaned back against the seat.
My husband had known that his sister was capable of hurting our daughter.
He had watched the footage.
He had begged someone else to keep quiet.
And then he had brought Lily back into the same room with Megan as if nothing had happened.
“Send me the video,” I said.
Zoe transferred the file to my phone, then sent the backup to my email.
I saved both copies.
“I'm taking Lily to a doctor,” I said.
“Then I'm reporting what happened tonight.””
Zoe nodded.
“I'll go with you.””
I looked at her.
“Why did you say Mark begged you never to show me the recording? What else did he tell you?””
Her eyes shifted toward the dashboard.
“There's something I didn't tell you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“When he came to my apartment last month, he wasn't alone.””
I stared at her.
“Who was with him?””
“Linda.””
I felt a fresh wave of disbelief.
“What did she want?””
Zoe took a long breath.
“She wanted me to delete the video, too. She said the family had already dealt with the situation privately.””
“Dealt with it?””
“She offered to pay for my new car if I erased every copy.””
I turned toward her.
“She tried to bribe you?””
“She said it was a gift. Then she told me that if the video ever got out, you would lose your marriage, Lily would lose her father, and I would be responsible for destroying the family.””
I stared at the phone in my hand.
The family.
That was what they kept calling themselves.
A family that had watched a little girl get hurt, then demanded silence from the only people who wanted to protect her.
“Did you take the money?””
“No.””
“Did you delete anything?””
“No, Chloe.””
I believed her.
But I couldn't stop thinking about the missing thirty seconds in the Christmas recording.
Someone had removed part of that footage.
Someone had known where to look.
Someone had wanted to make sure I never saw what happened.
I started the car.
“Where are we going?”” Zoe asked.
“To the hospital first. Then home.””
“Are you going to confront Mark?””
I looked at Lily in the rearview mirror.
“No.””
Zoe frowned.
“No?””
“Not until I know what else he's hiding.””
I had barely pulled out of the parking lot when my phone vibrated in the cup holder.
A message from Mark.
*Mark:* Where are you? Mom says you hit Megan and frightened everyone. Come home so we can discuss this like adults.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
*Mark:* And Chloe, don't involve Zoe in our marriage.
My fingers went numb.
He didn't ask about Lily.
He didn't ask whether her cheek was swollen.
He didn't ask if she was frightened.
He wanted to control who knew the truth.
I typed one sentence.
*Chloe:* Our daughter is hurt. Don't contact us until I decide what happens next.
I sent it and blocked his number for the night.
Zoe watched me.
“Good,” she whispered.
We drove toward the emergency department, where a nurse examined Lily and documented the injury. The doctor told me to monitor her for worsening swelling, pain, or any symptoms that might indicate a more serious injury. Thankfully, there were no signs of an eye injury or other immediate complication.
I held Lily's hand until she fell asleep again.
Afterward, I filed a report about the assault and provided the photograph of her cheek. I also told the officer about the earlier footage, although I kept the original file safely backed up.
By the time Zoe drove us home, it was nearly three in the morning.
I carried Lily upstairs and laid her in bed.
She stirred when I pulled the blanket over her.
“Mommy?””
“I'm here.””
“Can we have Thanksgiving at our house next year?””
My throat closed.
“Yes, baby.””
“Just us?””
I kissed her forehead.
“Just us, if that's what you want.””
She smiled faintly and closed her eyes.
I sat beside her until the room grew quiet.
Then I went downstairs and opened my laptop.
The Christmas recording played again.
Megan's hand tightened around Lily's wrist.
My daughter stumbled.
The video skipped.
I replayed the missing section several times, hoping I could find a way to recover it.
I couldn't.
Then I noticed something in the upper-right corner of the footage.
A small reflection in the glass of a framed photograph.
A person standing behind the camera.
I enlarged the image.
The reflection was blurry, but I could make out a dark sleeve, a wristwatch, and the outline of a hand holding a phone.
Someone had been standing in the hallway while Megan hurt Lily.
Someone had watched.
I stared at the wristwatch.
It was silver, with a dark blue face.
I'd seen that watch hundreds of times.
Mark wore it every day.
My phone vibrated beside the laptop.
This time, the message came from an unknown number.
*Unknown:* You need to stop looking at the Christmas footage.
May you like
A second message appeared before I could respond.
*Unknown:* If you want to know what really happened to Lily, ask your husband why he was the one who deleted the missing thirty seconds.
