Chapter 3: The Thirty Seconds He Erased
I read the message six times.
Then I took a screenshot.
My first instinct was to call the number, but I stopped when I noticed that it had no identifying information. Whoever had sent it knew about the recording, the missing footage, and my decision to investigate.
That meant one of two things.
They had access to Linda's security system.
Or someone inside the family had been watching me.
I looked toward the staircase.
Lily was asleep upstairs.
For the first time since Thanksgiving dinner, I felt something more frightening than anger.
I felt watched.
I locked the front door, checked the back entrance, and pulled every curtain closed. Then I called Zoe.
She answered immediately.
“Chloe?””
“Someone just texted me about the video.””
“What did they say?””
I read the messages aloud.
Zoe was silent for a moment.
“Did you recognize the number?””
“No.””
“Don't respond. Save everything. I'm coming over.””
“You don't have to—”
“I'm coming over,” she repeated.
“And don't open the door for anyone unless you know it's me.””
She hung up.
I returned to the laptop and examined the reflection again.
The watch was unmistakable.
Mark had received it from his father for his thirtieth birthday. He wore it to our wedding, to Lily's first birthday, and to every family gathering that mattered to him.
I remembered him sitting on the couch in Zoe's apartment eleven months earlier, watching the video of his sister grabbing our daughter.
Had he stood in that hallway?
Had he watched Megan hurt Lily in person?
Or had he arrived afterward and deleted the footage to protect her?
I couldn't answer those questions.
But I knew who could.
At 4:12 a.m., I called Mark.
He answered on the fourth ring.
“Chloe?””
His voice was thick with sleep.
“Were you at your mother's house on Christmas Day when Megan hurt Lily?””
Silence.
Then a sharp exhale.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“It's four in the morning.””
“Answer the question.””
He sat up, judging by the rustle of sheets.
“Why are you asking me this?””
“Because I saw the footage.””
He stopped speaking.
I gripped the phone tighter.
“You knew what happened, didn't you?””
“Chloe, listen to me.””
“No. You listen to me. Did you know Megan had hurt Lily before Thanksgiving?””
“It's complicated.””
A cold laugh escaped me.
“That's what people say when the truth makes them look bad.””
He sighed.
“I didn't want you to find out this way.””
“Then how did you want me to find out? After she hit Lily a third time?””
“Don't say that.””
“Why? Because it sounds terrible when I say it out loud?””
“Chloe, you're upset.””
“My daughter has a handprint on her face because your sister hit her. I have a video of that same sister hurting her last Christmas. And now someone is telling me you deleted part of the footage.””
His breathing changed.
“Who sent you that?””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
Not What footage?
Not What happened to Lily?
Who told you?
“You're not denying it,” I whispered.
“That's not what this is.””
“Did you delete the missing thirty seconds?””
He didn't answer.
“Mark?””
“I need to see you in person.””
“No.””
“Chloe, please. There are things you don't understand.””
“Then explain them.””
“I can't do that over the phone.””
“Try.””
He was quiet for several seconds.
Then he said, “Did Zoe give you the entire recording?””
“Why?””
“Because she shouldn't have.””
My fingers began to tremble.
“Why shouldn't she have?””
“Because it could hurt Lily.””
I stared at the dark window across the room.
“You don't get to use our daughter as an excuse to hide what you did.””
“I'm trying to protect her.””
“From whom? Megan? Your mother? Or you?””
He inhaled sharply.
“You have no idea what you're getting into.””
I almost laughed.
“My five-year-old daughter was slapped in front of an entire dinner table. I know exactly what I'm getting into.””
“Chloe—”
“Did you delete the footage?””
A long silence followed.
Then Mark said, “Yes.””
The room seemed to contract around me.
“You did.””
“I had a reason.””
“What reason could possibly justify erasing evidence of someone hurting our child?””
“It's not what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
He lowered his voice.
“Meet me tomorrow morning. Just you and me. I'll explain everything.””
“No.””
“Please.””
I had heard that word from him countless times. Please stay a little longer. Please forgive my mother.
Please don't argue with Megan. Please let this go.
Every time, I'd mistaken his desperation for love.
“What happened in those thirty seconds?”” I asked.
He swallowed audibly.
“I can't tell you over the phone.””
“Then we're done talking.””
“Chloe, don't hang up.””
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I sat in the darkness, listening to the refrigerator hum in the kitchen.
Mark had admitted it.
He had deleted the footage.
Whatever his reason, he had deliberately removed part of a recording showing his sister hurting our daughter.
And he had kept that secret for eleven months.
A knock sounded at the front door.
I nearly dropped the phone.
“Chloe?”” Zoe called from outside.
“It's me.””
I checked through the peephole before unlocking the door.
She came inside carrying two coffees and a paper bag of breakfast sandwiches.
“You look like you haven't slept.””
“I haven't.””
She placed the bag on the kitchen counter.
“Did you call him?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“He admitted deleting the footage.””
Zoe's face went pale.
“He admitted it?””
“Yes.””
“What was his reason?””
“He says he wants to explain in person.””
Zoe let out a bitter laugh.
“Of course he does.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She hesitated, then reached into her coat pocket.
“I didn't want to tell you this until I was sure.””
“Tell me what?””
She placed a folded piece of paper on the counter.
It was a printed email.
The sender's address belonged to Mark's work account. The recipient was Linda.
The date was December 28, 2025.
Three days after Christmas.
I began reading.
Mom, I reviewed the footage and removed the section that could be misunderstood. Megan was upset, and Lily wouldn't listen. We need to keep this within the family.
I looked up.
“Misunderstood?””
Zoe nodded grimly.
“There's more.””
I read the rest.
If Chloe finds out, she'll take Lily and leave. We cannot let that happen before the trust issue is resolved.
I stopped.
“What trust issue?””
Zoe pulled out another sheet.
This one was a bank document.
At the top was the name of a family trust established by Mark's father before he died.
Beneath it was Lily's name.
My daughter.
I stared at the page.
“Why is Lily listed here?””
“Because your father-in-law left money for her.””
I looked at Zoe.
“How much?””
“According to the documents I found, the trust was worth approximately $1.8 million when it was established.””
I sat down.
The kitchen seemed to sway around me.
“Why have I never heard about this?””
“Because Mark's family never told you.””
I scanned the document again.
There were references to a trustee, annual distributions, and a beneficiary's guardian.
My name appeared nowhere.
Mark's name did.
So did Linda's.
“Who controls the money?”” I asked.
“Linda is listed as the trustee. Mark is listed as the alternate trustee.””
“And Lily?””
“The sole beneficiary.””
I gripped the edge of the counter.
“Why would they hide this from me?””
Zoe looked at the email again.
“I think the answer is in the next paragraph.””
I lowered my eyes.
The next distribution is scheduled for January. Once the guardianship paperwork is completed, we'll be in a stronger position to manage the funds without Chloe interfering.
I read the sentence twice.
Then a third time.
“Guardianship paperwork?””
Zoe nodded.
“I don't know exactly what they planned. But I think that's why Mark was so desperate to keep you from seeing the video.””
I felt sick.
“Are you saying they wanted to take Lily away from me?””
“I'm saying we need to find out.””
I pushed the papers away.
“No. I want to know why Megan was hurting her. I want to know why Mark stood there and watched. And I want to know what those thirty seconds showed.””
Zoe leaned forward.
“Then we need the original recording.””
“Linda controls the security system.””
“Not necessarily. The cameras upload their footage to a cloud account. If the original wasn't permanently deleted, there may be an archived copy.””
I looked at the laptop.
“Can you access it?””
“I can try.””
She sat beside me and opened her computer. Her fingers moved quickly across the keyboard as she logged into the security portal she'd used the previous year.
After several failed attempts, she found the account.
A password prompt appeared.
Zoe frowned.
“Linda changed the password.””
“Can you recover it?””
“Maybe.””
She clicked the recovery option.
An email arrived almost immediately.
But the recovery address wasn't Linda's.
It belonged to Mark.
Zoe stared at the screen.
“He changed the account recovery information.””
I felt another piece of the puzzle slide into place.
“Can you access the archived files?””
“Not without his approval.””
I leaned back in my chair.
“Then we have to find another way.””
Zoe studied the page.
“Wait.””
She clicked a menu marked Shared Devices.
A list appeared, showing the cameras connected to the system.
Most were labeled by room.
One was simply called *Garage Backup*.
Zoe frowned.
“That's strange.””
“What is?””
“The garage camera wasn't part of Linda's original setup. She added it later, after the Christmas recording.””
“Could it have captured the hallway?””
“Probably not. But it might have recorded who accessed the system.””
She opened the device history.
A series of login timestamps appeared.
One entry stood out.
December 25, 2025, at 8:43 p.m.
The recording of Megan hurting Lily had been created at 8:41 p.m.
Two minutes later, someone logged into the system remotely and began deleting files.
The username was displayed beside the entry.
Mark's full name.
I stared at it.
He hadn't merely discovered the footage later.
He had accessed the system almost immediately after the incident.
And the login record showed that he had deleted more than one file.
Zoe clicked the entry.
A warning appeared.
*Archived activity available. Request account administrator authorization to view.*
“Damn it,” Zoe whispered.
“Can we get authorization?””
“Only from the account administrator.””
“Linda?””
“Or Mark.””
I looked at the screen.
For eleven months, they had controlled what I knew about my own daughter.
They had decided which facts I could see, which questions I was allowed to ask, and how much of the truth they could erase.
But they had made one mistake.
They had assumed I'd never look.
I took out my phone and opened the unknown number's messages.
I typed a reply.
*Chloe:* Who are you? What happened during the missing thirty seconds?
I waited.
Nothing.
Then the screen lit up.
A new message appeared.
*Unknown:* Mark wasn't alone when he deleted the footage.
I sat perfectly still.
Another message followed.
*Unknown:* Someone else was in the room with him. Someone who knew exactly what Megan had done to Lily.
My hands went cold.
I typed back.
*Chloe:* Who?
The reply came almost instantly.
*Unknown:* Your mother-in-law.
I stared at the screen.
Linda hadn't simply protected Megan after the slap.
She had helped Mark erase the evidence months earlier.
And if the anonymous sender was telling the truth, she had watched the original footage before it disappeared.
My phone vibrated again.
This time, the message contained a photograph.
It showed Linda standing beside Mark in a room I recognized immediately: the small office at the back of her house, where she kept the family photographs and her late husband's papers.
Mark was holding a laptop.
Linda was pointing at the screen.
The photograph's timestamp read December 25, 2025, at 8:44 p.m.
One minute after Mark's login.
I enlarged the image.
On the laptop screen was a paused video.
I couldn't see the full picture, but I could make out a small red dress and a figure standing near the hallway wall.
Lily.
Then I noticed something else.
Linda wasn't looking at the laptop.
She was looking directly at the camera.
As if she knew someone was recording her.
A final message arrived.
*Unknown:* You need to ask Linda what happened to the person who tried to protect Lily that night.
I read it again.
Then again.
Someone had tried to protect my daughter.
Someone had been present when Megan hurt her.
And Mark and Linda had worked together to erase the evidence.
I looked at Zoe.
“We're going to Linda's house.””
Zoe shook her head.
“Not without a plan.””
“I don't care about a plan.””
“You should. If they're hiding something this serious, walking in there angry won't get us the truth.””
I looked toward the staircase.
Lily was still asleep.
For her sake, Zoe was right.
I couldn't let my anger make decisions that might put my daughter at greater risk.
I took a deep breath.
“Fine. We do this carefully.””
Zoe nodded.
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed Linda's name.
I answered but said nothing.
Her voice came through, calm and perfectly composed.
“Chloe, darling. We need to talk about what happened last night.””
I gripped the phone.
“What do you want?””
“I think you've misunderstood the situation.””
“Then explain it.””
She paused.
“I know you've been looking at old recordings.””
My blood turned to ice.
“Who told you?””
“That doesn't matter.””
“It matters to me.””
Her voice sharpened.
“Listen carefully. Whatever you think you've discovered, you need to stop before you damage this family beyond repair.””
I stared at the photograph on my laptop.
“You mean before I discover what you and Mark did?””
A long silence followed.
Then Linda said something that made my entire body go still.
“Your daughter wasn't supposed to be there when Megan lost control.””
I couldn't breathe.
“What does that mean?””
But Linda had already ended the call.
May you like
And for the first time, I understood that the missing thirty seconds might not be the worst part of the story.
The worst part was that someone had known what was going to happen to Lily before it happened.
