Chapter 9: The Truth Behind The Marriage

I didn't tell Marcus about Richard immediately.

I don't know why.

Maybe because I was tired of choosing sides.

Maybe because everyone had lied to me.

Marcus.

Vivian.

Emma.

Evelyn.

Every person who claimed to protect me had taken away my right to decide for myself.

So I listened.

But I didn't trust.

Richard Whitmore asked me to meet him at an old private club downtown.

A place with dark wood walls and expensive paintings.

The kind of place where powerful people made decisions that ruined ordinary lives.

When I arrived, I knew immediately who he was.

He looked like my father.

Not exactly.

But enough.

The same eyes.

The same sharp features.

The same expression that made people feel like they were being measured.

“Claire.””

His voice was calm.

I sat across from him.

“You know who I am.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He smiled slightly.

“Because I spent years looking for you.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because your father trusted me.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””

“And you don't believe them.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“Good.””

I frowned.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

He leaned forward.

“Trust is dangerous when people use it against you.””

I looked at him carefully.

“What do you know about Marcus?””

His face became serious.

“More than you think.””

“Then tell me.””

Richard opened a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Emails.

I looked at the first page.

A transfer record.

Between Vivian Cross and a private account.

The sender?

Hale Enterprises.

My stomach tightened.

“What is this?””

“Payment.””

“From Marcus?””

Richard shook his head.

“From someone using his company.””

I looked at the next document.

A message.

*Once Claire signs the divorce agreement, the trust will be easier to access.*

My hands went cold.

“Who wrote this?””

Richard looked at me.

“Vivian.””

I swallowed.

“And Marcus?””

“Your husband was manipulated.””

I looked up sharply.

“Don't defend him.””

“I am not.””

Richard closed the folder.

“I am explaining.””

I looked away.

Because that was the hardest part.

Marcus had been wrong.

But maybe he wasn't the only person controlling the game.

“Why didn't you come sooner?””

Richard became quiet.

“Because I didn't know where you were.””

“Why?””

“Because your adoptive parents changed your records.””

I froze.

“My parents?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“They were paid.””

The room went silent.

My whole life became a collection of lies.

The people who raised me.

The man I married.

The family I trusted.

Everyone had a secret.

“Why would they do that?””

“To keep you alive.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Richard leaned back.

“Your father wasn't killed in an accident.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

“He was murdered.””

My hands trembled.

“And my mother?””

“Same.””

I couldn't breathe.

“Who?””

Richard looked at me.

“The person who benefits most from your disappearance.””

I whispered:

“Who?””

He didn't answer immediately.

Then:

“Evelyn Hale.””

I stood up.

“No.””

“Claire.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She raised me.””

“She protected her family's interests.””

“You don't know her.””

Richard's expression softened.

“I know exactly who she is.””

I walked out.

I needed air.

I needed space.

I needed something that wasn't another impossible truth.

When I returned to the Hale estate, everyone was waiting.

Marcus saw my face.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“Did your mother know about my inheritance?””

His expression changed.

That was enough.

“Marcus.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“Then why did you hesitate?””

“Because I knew my mother did.””

I stepped back.

“You all knew.””

“No.””

“You knew enough.””

He came closer.

“Claire, listen.””

“No.””

I held up the folder.

“I'm done listening.””

Evelyn stood.

“Claire.””

I looked at her.

“Did you know my father?””

Silence.

Her face changed.

That was all I needed.

“Yes.””

My voice broke.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me marry your son.””

“I tried to protect you.””

I laughed.

“By letting him betray me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked around.

“Everyone made mistakes except me.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“Did you ever love me?””

His face broke.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you destroy me?””

He had no answer.

Then the front doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Emma stood there.

Crying.

Holding a document.

“I know who killed William Whitmore.””

Nobody moved.

She looked directly at Evelyn.

May you like

And whispered:

“And I know why you really took Claire in.””
