Chapter 1: The Woman He Chose

I stared at Vivian.

Then I looked at Marcus.

For three years, I had waited for him to choose me in every little way.

When his career became stressful, I stayed.

When his father got sick, I sat beside him through every hospital visit.

When we found out we were having a baby, I cried in his arms while he promised me that our son would grow up knowing what a real family looked like.

I had believed him.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Not the divorce.

Not even Vivian.

It was realizing that the man who made those promises had already walked away while I was still standing beside him.

The hotel doors opened behind me, letting in a cold gust of November air.

I stepped outside.

The city lights blurred through my tears.

“Claire.””

I heard Marcus behind me.

I kept walking.

“Claire, wait.””

I stopped at the curb.

Not because I wanted to.

Because my body reminded me that I wasn't alone.

My hand moved instinctively over my stomach.

My baby.

Our baby.

Marcus came closer, but he didn't touch me this time.

Maybe he finally understood I wouldn't let him.

“You can't just leave like this,” he said.

I turned around slowly.

The man standing in front of me looked exactly like my husband.

Same dark hair.

Same expensive suit.

Same watch I bought him for our second anniversary.

But somehow, he was a stranger wearing Marcus Hale's face.

“Like what?”” I asked.

His eyebrows pulled together.

“Upset. Angry. Making decisions when you're emotional.””

I almost laughed.

“Making decisions?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“You mean like deciding not to be cheated on?””

His jaw tightened.

“You're twisting things.””

“No, Marcus. I'm finally seeing them clearly.””

A taxi slowed near the hotel entrance, but I didn't raise my hand.

I wanted him to hear me.

For once in our marriage, I wanted him to actually hear me.

“You spent a year lying to me.””

“I didn't want to hurt you.””

The sentence was so ridiculous that I didn't know whether to cry or scream.

“You didn't want to hurt me?””

“No.””

“You slept with another woman while I was carrying your child.””

His eyes moved away.

That tiny movement said more than any confession.

I nodded.

“Right.””

“Claire, things between us haven't been good for a long time.””

“According to you.””

“According to reality.””

I looked at him.

“Did you love me when you were with her?””

He didn't answer immediately.

That pause destroyed something inside me.

Because sometimes silence was the cruelest answer.

“I cared about you,” he finally said.

Cared.

Not loved.

Not cherished.

Cared.

Like I was an old photograph he couldn't throw away.

I pressed my lips together.

“Did you tell her you loved her?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

That was enough.

I whispered, “You did.””

“Claire—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I don't want another explanation.””

The taxi driver rolled down his window.

“Ma’am, do you need a ride?””

I opened my mouth.

Before I could answer, Marcus said, “Yes.””

I looked at him.

He nodded toward the taxi.

“Go home. We'll talk tomorrow.””

Tomorrow.

Like my entire life hadn't collapsed in a hotel lobby.

Like I could sleep and wake up as the woman I was six hours ago.

I opened the taxi door.

Then I stopped.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“When did you stop loving me?””

For the first time all night, he looked away because he couldn't pretend.

“I don't know.””

I nodded slowly.

A strange calm came over me.

Because that answer hurt less than a lie.

I got into the taxi.

As the car pulled away, I looked through the window.

Marcus didn't follow.

He didn't call my name.

He didn't run after me.

He simply stood there.

Watching his wife leave.

And standing beside the woman he had chosen.

My apartment felt different when I walked inside.

Or maybe I was different.

The nursery door was slightly open.

I had painted that room myself.

Soft gray walls.

White shelves.

A wooden crib Marcus assembled three weeks ago while complaining that the instructions were impossible.

I smiled when I remembered.

That smile disappeared quickly.

Because now I wondered.

Was he thinking about Vivian while he built our son's crib?

Was he texting her while I picked out baby clothes?

Was he laughing with her while I sat alone at doctor's appointments?

My phone rang.

I froze.

For one stupid second, I hoped it was Marcus.

It wasn't.

It was my younger sister, Emma.

I answered.

“Hey.””

The moment she heard my voice, she knew.

“What happened?””

I sat on the edge of the bed.

“I found out.””

A pause.

“What?””

“Marcus.””

My voice cracked.

“He's been having an affair.””

Silence.

Then Emma whispered, “No.””

“Yes.””

“With who?””

I closed my eyes.

“Vivian Cross.””

Another silence.

Then Emma's voice changed.

Anger replaced shock.

“The woman from his office?””

“Yes.””

“The one he said was just a consultant?””

“Yes.””

I heard her inhale.

“Claire…”

“I know.””

“No, you don't understand. I saw her last month.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“She was at that charity dinner with Marcus.””

I sat up.

“What are you talking about?””

“I thought she was just someone from work.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“Emma, what did you see?””

She hesitated.

Then she said the words that made my blood run cold.

“They weren't acting like coworkers.””

The room suddenly felt too quiet.

“How?””

“Claire…”

“Tell me.””

Emma sighed.

“They looked like a couple.””

I closed my eyes.

Another piece of the puzzle.

Another moment I had ignored.

Because believing the truth meant destroying the life I loved.

“I was stupid,” I whispered.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No, Claire. He lied.””

I looked toward the nursery.

“He made it easy to believe him.””

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Marcus.

I stared at the screen.

*We need to discuss custody arrangements before the baby is born.*

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Custody.

Not our son.

Not my pregnancy.

Not how I was feeling.

Custody.

Emma heard my silence.

“What is it?””

I swallowed.

“He's already talking about custody.””

“What?””

“He wants to discuss arrangements.””

Emma's voice became sharp.

“Tonight?””

“Yes.””

“After what he did?””

I didn't answer.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Marcus hadn't just chosen Vivian.

He had planned this.

And if he was already thinking about custody, there was something else happening.

Something I didn't know.

A few minutes later, another message arrived.

This one wasn't from Marcus.

It was from an unknown number.

*You need to stop fighting what is already over.*

My heart stopped.

I stared at the message.

May you like

Then another one appeared.

*Ask Marcus who really owns the house you're sleeping in.*
