Chapter 6: The Man Behind The Lies

I looked at Marcus standing outside the hospital.

The same man who once held my hand during every doctor's appointment.

The same man who cried when we heard our son's heartbeat.

The same man who now looked at me like I was a stranger.

For a moment, I wanted to scream.

I wanted to ask how he could stand there demanding honesty after giving me a year of lies.

But then I remembered.

The baby.

Our son.

The only person who mattered.

“Who told you?””

Marcus looked away.

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

His jaw tightened.

“Vivian.””

Of course.

I laughed quietly.

“You really do believe everything she says.””

“That isn't fair.””

I stepped closer.

“No?””

My voice shook.

“You believed her when she said I changed.””

“Claire—”

“You believed her when she said I wanted your money.””

“That's not what happened.””

“You believed her enough to prepare divorce papers six weeks ago.””

His face changed.

Because that was true.

I saw the guilt.

A tiny crack.

But it disappeared quickly.

“I need to know about the baby.””

I looked at him.

“You need to know?””

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

“Fine.””

He waited.

I took a breath.

“The baby is mine.””

His eyes narrowed.

“That isn't an answer.””

“It is.””

“Claire.””

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“You don't get to stand here and question me like you're the victim.””

His expression hardened.

“I have a right to know.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“You do.””

A pause.

“But you don't have the right to pretend you were protecting yourself.””

He looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you were planning to leave me before you ever knew there was a question.””

Silence.

Because he couldn't deny it.

“I loved you,” he whispered.

I almost believed him.

Almost.

Then I remembered the hotel.

The slap.

Vivian's hand on his arm.

His silence.

“Love isn't what you say after you get caught.””

His face fell.

“Claire.””

“I need space.””

“I need answers.””

I looked at him.

“Then maybe we both finally understand how it feels.””

I walked away.

Three days later, the paternity results arrived.

I didn't open them.

Not immediately.

I sat at my kitchen table with the envelope in front of me.

A simple piece of paper.

A few words.

A result that could change everything.

My phone rang.

Emma.

I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

“Hello?””

“Claire.””

Her voice was shaking.

“What happened?””

“Marcus knows.””

My heart tightened.

“Knows what?””

“About Daniel.””

I closed my eyes.

“How?””

“Vivian told him.””

I stood up.

“What did he do?””

“Nothing.””

That scared me more.

“Emma.””

“He didn't get angry.””

“Then what?””

She whispered:

“He looked relieved.””

Relieved.

The word made no sense.

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

Then I heard something else.

A voice in the background.

Marcus.

I froze.

“He's with you?””

“No.””

Emma hesitated.

“Claire…”

“What?””

“There is something you need to know.””

I waited.

“Daniel isn't the father.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“The test.””

She swallowed.

“The test results came back.””

I looked at the envelope on the table.

“What are you saying?””

Emma whispered:

“Daniel took a test too.””

My heart raced.

“What did it say?””

Silence.

Then:

“He isn't the father either.””

I sat down.

The room spinning.

“No.””

“Claire.””

“No.””

I looked at the envelope.

The unopened results.

“Then who?””

Emma didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Because another sound came through the phone.

A man's voice.

A voice I recognized.

Marcus.

“Tell her.””

My blood ran cold.

Emma whispered:

“Claire…”

“What?””

Her voice broke.

“The baby is Marcus's.””

I closed my eyes.

For a second, relief came.

Then confusion.

Because if Marcus was the father…

Why had Vivian been so confident?

Why had Emma been afraid?

Why had everyone been hiding something?

Then Marcus spoke through the phone.

And his words changed everything.

“Claire, there's something you don't know.””

I stood frozen.

“What?””

A long pause.

Then:

“The baby isn't the reason they wanted me to leave you.””

My breath caught.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus's voice became quieter.

“The baby was never the secret.””

I looked at the envelope.

At the nursery.

At the life I thought I understood.

“What was?””

May you like

His answer came softly.

“Your identity.””
