Chapter 9: The Mother Who Came Back From the Dead

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not Rico.

Not Dante.

Not me.

Not even Leo.

The world had become impossibly quiet.

Because standing ten feet away from me was a woman who had existed only in memories.

In old photographs.

In a necklace.

In a letter.

A woman who had been buried by an entire city.

Isabella Moretti.

Alive.

My knees almost gave out.

“No,” Rico whispered.

It wasn’t anger.

It wasn’t disbelief.

It was pain.

The kind of pain that came from wanting something so badly that your mind refused to accept it when it finally appeared.

Isabella looked at him.

And tears filled her eyes.

“Rico.””

His name left her mouth like a prayer.

I watched the man who terrified entire rooms become completely still.

“You’re dead.””

Her face broke.

“I know.””

“You’re dead.””

“I know what everyone believes.””

Rico took one step forward.

Then stopped.

Like he was afraid she would disappear again.

“Six months.””

His voice cracked.

“Six months I buried you.””

Isabella lowered her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

The word came out sharper.

“You don’t get to say sorry.””

Everyone froze.

Because this was the first time I saw Rico angry at someone he loved.

“You let me believe I lost you.””

“I had no choice.””

“You had a daughter.””

His voice broke.

“You had a daughter who grew up without knowing you existed.””

Isabella looked at me.

And the pain on her face almost hurt worse than anything else.

“Clara.””

Hearing my name from her lips felt unreal.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

All my life, I had wondered what my birth mother would sound like.

What she would say.

What she would look like.

And now she was standing in front of me.

The woman who gave me away.

The woman who saved me.

The woman who left me.

“You knew me?””

Her lips trembled.

“I knew everything.””

“Everything?””

She nodded.

“I watched every birthday.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“I watched you learn to walk.””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I watched your first day of school.””

My voice became cold.

“Then why didn’t you come?””

The question destroyed her.

Because she had no answer that could fix it.

“I wanted to.””

“Then why?””

She looked at Rico.

Then at Matteo.

“Because Matteo would have killed you.””

I looked toward the man holding Leo.

Matteo smiled.

“Finally. Everyone understands.””

Rico turned.

“You.””

The hatred in his voice was terrifying.

Matteo didn’t care.

“You always were emotional, little brother.””

“You killed my wife.””

Matteo laughed.

“No.””

He looked at Isabella.

“She did that herself.””

My stomach turned.

Isabella’s expression changed.

“Matteo.””

“What?””

He smiled.

“Should we tell them the truth?””

Rico stepped forward.

“Tell me what?””

Matteo looked at me.

“Your mother was never supposed to survive.””

A chill ran through the warehouse.

“She was supposed to disappear.””

Isabella’s face hardened.

“But I didn’t.””

“No.””

Matteo smiled.

“And that ruined everything.””

Dante quietly moved his hand toward his weapon.

Matteo noticed.

“Don’t.””

His guards appeared from the shadows.

I hadn’t even seen them.

Rico immediately stepped in front of me.

Protecting me.

Protecting Leo.

Even now.

Even when everything was falling apart.

“Let my son go.””

Matteo looked at Leo.

“Your son.””

Then at me.

“Your daughter.””

He laughed softly.

“You both spent years believing you understood family.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You never did.””

I felt anger replace fear.

“Stop talking like you’re the victim.””

Everyone looked at me.

Even Rico.

Matteo smiled.

“You have her attitude.””

“Good.””

I stepped forward.

“Because she survived you.””

For the first time, his smile disappeared.

Isabella looked at me.

Pride flashed in her eyes.

Small.

But real.

Matteo’s jaw tightened.

“You have no idea what your mother did.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked surprised.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Fine.””

He walked closer.

“Your mother discovered my plans.””

Rico’s expression changed.

“The evidence.””

“Yes.””

Matteo smiled.

“She found everything.””

He looked at Isabella.

“She was going to expose me.””

“And you tried to kill her.””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“I tried to control the situation.””

I almost laughed.

“You call murder control?””

His eyes turned cold.

“I call survival.””

Rico stepped forward.

“You threatened my family.””

Matteo shrugged.

“You were always too soft.””

The words hit him.

Because they were meant to.

“You loved Isabella.””

Matteo smiled.

“That was your weakness.””

Then he looked at Leo.

“And now your son is.””

Rico’s expression changed instantly.

“Don’t touch him.””

Matteo leaned down.

Leo looked terrified.

“Daddy.””

One word.

One tiny word.

And Rico broke.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

He looked at Isabella.

Then me.

Then Leo.

And I understood.

He had spent his whole life fighting enemies.

But he had never learned how to fight losing people.

“Matteo.””

My voice surprised everyone.

Including myself.

He looked at me.

“You want what Isabella hid.””

“Yes.””

“You think it’s the evidence.””

His expression shifted.

“Isn’t it?””

I touched the necklace.

“No.””

Silence.

“Because Isabella didn’t hide the evidence in the necklace.””

Everyone stared.

Rico looked confused.

“How do you know?””

“Because she didn’t leave something to destroy Matteo.””

I looked at Isabella.

“She left something to protect us.””

Isabella’s eyes widened.

I saw it.

The answer.

“You hid the evidence somewhere else.””

Matteo’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

I continued.

“You knew he would find the necklace.””

Isabella slowly nodded.

“But you needed him to believe it mattered.””

A tear fell from her eye.

“Clara…”

“You didn’t leave a weapon.””

I looked at her.

“You left a message.””

Matteo suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He grabbed Leo.

Rico reacted instantly.

“Leo!””

The boy screamed.

And the entire warehouse exploded into chaos.

Dante attacked one guard.

Rico moved toward Matteo.

But Matteo pulled Leo closer.

“Stop!””

Everyone froze.

I saw it.

The fear in Leo’s eyes.

The same fear I saw in the restaurant.

The same panic.

And suddenly I knew what to do.

I walked forward.

“Clara.””

Rico’s voice warned me.

I ignored him.

Matteo pointed at me.

“Don’t.””

But I kept walking.

“You’re scared.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“You’re not holding Leo because you’re powerful.””

I took another step.

“You’re holding him because you’re afraid.””

“Shut up.””

“You spent your whole life trying to take things from people.””

I looked at Leo.

“But you never learned how to make someone love you.””

Matteo’s hand shook.

Just slightly.

Enough.

I crouched.

“Leo.””

His eyes found mine.

“I’m here.””

“Clara…”

“I know.””

I smiled softly.

“Remember what we practiced?””

His lips trembled.

“In…”

He took a breath.

“Out.””

Matteo looked confused.

Leo copied me.

One breath.

Then another.

The panic faded.

His body relaxed.

And in that moment, Matteo lost control.

Because he couldn’t understand something.

Love.

The thing he had spent his whole life trying to replace with power.

Leo moved.

Just enough.

Rico grabbed him.

Everything happened at once.

Matteo stumbled backward.

Dante’s men surrounded him.

And for the first time…

Matteo Moretti looked afraid.

But before anyone could take him away, he laughed.

A dark, broken laugh.

“You still don’t know the final secret.””

Rico held Leo tightly.

“What secret?””

Matteo looked at Isabella.

Then at me.

“The reason Isabella disappeared.””

A pause.

“The reason she left Clara behind.””

His smile returned.

“Ask her who Clara’s real father is.””

May you like

The room went silent.

And Isabella closed her eyes.
