Chapter 4: The Daughter Isabella Left Behind
Nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not my mother.
Not even Dante.
Ricardo Moretti stood in the doorway like a man who had walked into a nightmare he had been searching for.
I wanted to hate him.
Maybe I should have.
He was the reason my life had been surrounded by secrets.
He was the reason my mother had spent years hiding the truth.
But looking at him now, I saw something I didn’t expect.
Grief.
Not the kind people show at funerals.
The kind that lives inside someone and changes the way they breathe.
“You knew,” I whispered.
Rico looked at my mother.
Then back at me.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“I knew Isabella had a secret.””
He stepped inside.
“But I never knew it was you.””
My mother stood.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Rico’s eyes hardened.
“Neither should my daughter have grown up believing she had no family.””
The word hit me.
Daughter.
I hated how natural it sounded coming from him.
“I’m not your daughter.””
His face tightened.
“You are.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know you.””
“That’s because someone made sure you didn’t.””
My mother looked away.
The silence confirmed everything.
I felt something inside me crack.
“Did everyone know except me?””
“No,” my mother said quickly.
“Not everyone.””
“Who knew?””
She didn’t answer.
Rico did.
“Isabella.””
I looked at him.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
The question came out angry.
Painfully angry.
Rico looked down.
“Because she thought she was going to die.””
The room became colder.
He continued.
“Your mother found out someone close to me was selling information.””
“Information about what?””
“My company.””
“Your company?””
He nodded.
“But it wasn’t about money.””
His jaw tightened.
“It was about control.””
I looked at Dante.
He lowered his eyes.
That bothered me.
“You know something.””
Dante stayed silent.
“Dante.””
Rico’s voice was sharp.
The bodyguard looked uncomfortable.
“There are things you don’t know, boss.””
Rico stared at him.
“Explain.””
Dante sighed.
“Isabella wasn’t killed by an accident.””
The words landed like a weapon.
My mother covered her mouth.
I couldn’t move.
“What did you say?””
Rico’s face turned dark.
“Dante.””
“You deserved to know.””
“Not like this.””
“No, boss.””
Dante looked at me.
“She deserved to know years ago.””
Rico’s hands curled into fists.
For the first time, I saw the anger people whispered about.
But it wasn’t aimed at me.
It was aimed at himself.
“I spent six months believing I lost my wife because I failed to protect her.””
His voice lowered.
“But I never knew she was protecting our daughter.””
I looked away.
Because suddenly I remembered every birthday.
Every school event.
Every time I wondered why other kids had two parents and I only had one.
My mother had loved me.
I knew that.
But there was another woman.
A woman whose blood ran through my veins.
A woman who had worn this necklace.
A woman who had died without me ever knowing her name.
Rico reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“She wrote this.””
He handed it to me.
I didn’t want to take it.
But my hand moved anyway.
The handwriting was elegant.
Careful.
The first line made my heart stop.
*My dearest Clara,*
I couldn’t breathe.
I kept reading.
*If you are reading this, then something happened that forced the truth into the open. I am sorry I wasn’t brave enough to tell you myself.*
My vision blurred.
*You have a father who will spend his life trying to make up for the years he lost.*
I looked at Rico.
He looked away.
*But remember this: love is not proven by who shares your blood. It is proven by who stays when things become difficult.*
A tear landed on the paper.
Then I reached the final line.
*Trust the man who looks at you like he is seeing his future, not his past.*
I lowered the letter.
Rico was staring at me.
Not like a powerful man.
Not like a feared man.
Like someone waiting for a verdict.
A small sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Dante immediately turned.
“Boss.””
Rico noticed too.
The entire room changed.
The softness disappeared.
The dangerous man returned.
“Who is it?””
Dante looked through the window.
His face went pale.
“Someone who shouldn’t know she’s here.””
Rico moved in front of me.
Protective.
Instinctive.
“Who?””
Dante hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The man who ordered Isabella’s death.””
My blood froze.
Rico’s expression became deadly.
“Name.””
Dante looked at him.
“It’s your brother.””
The room went silent.
Because I had spent my whole life wondering who my family was.
May you like
And now I had found them.
Only to discover one of them might have destroyed the other.
