Chapter 5: The Brother Behind the Shadow

The name hung in the air like a gunshot.

“Your brother.””

I looked at Ricardo Moretti.

For the first time since I had met him, I didn’t see a man everyone feared.

I saw a man who had just been betrayed by the last person he expected.

“My brother died years ago,” Rico said quietly.

Dante’s face tightened.

“No, boss.””

The room became colder.

“Matteo is alive.””

My mother stepped backward.

“No…”

Everyone turned toward her.

Rico noticed immediately.

“You knew.””

My mother’s eyes filled with fear.

“I knew Isabella was afraid of someone.””

“But you never told me who.””

“She made me promise.””

Rico laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“She made everyone promise.””

His hand moved through his hair.

“My wife trusted strangers more than she trusted me.””

The pain behind those words was impossible to miss.

I looked at the letter still in my hand.

A woman I had never known had trusted this man with my life.

And now I had to decide whether I trusted him too.

“Who is Matteo?”” I asked.

Rico looked at me.

“My older brother.””

“And he wanted Isabella dead?””

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Isabella found out what he was doing.””

“What was he doing?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That scared me more than if they had.

Finally, Dante spoke.

“Matteo wasn’t just stealing from the company.””

Rico looked at him.

“Dante.””

The bodyguard didn’t stop.

“He was building his own empire.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Dante looked at me.

“It means he wasn’t planning to take money.””

He paused.

“He was planning to take everything.””

The rain outside became heavier.

Rico walked toward the window.

“My father built Moretti Holdings from nothing. When he died, he divided control between me and Matteo.””

“And?””

“Matteo believed he deserved all of it.””

I stared at him.

“So he killed Isabella?””

Rico didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My stomach twisted.

“How did she die?””

His shoulders lowered slightly.

“A car accident.””

“That’s what everyone said.””

“Yes.””

“But you don’t believe it.””

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Then why didn’t you find out?””

The question came out sharper than I intended.

Rico turned.

For a moment, anger flashed in his eyes.

Not toward me.

Toward himself.

“Because I was too busy grieving.””

The room went silent.

“I buried my wife,” he said.

“I buried the woman who knew every secret I had.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“And I never thought she was hiding the biggest one.””

His eyes moved to me.

“You.””

I looked away.

I didn’t know what to do with the fact that this dangerous man was looking at me like I was something precious.

I had spent my entire life being ordinary.

A waitress.

A woman paying rent late.

Someone who worried about grocery prices.

Now I was suddenly the missing piece in a war between powerful people.

“I need to leave,” I said.

Rico immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

“You’re not safe.””

“I’ve been safe for twenty-six years.””

“Because Matteo didn’t know where you were.””

The words stopped me.

“How do you know?””

Rico looked at Dante.

Dante answered.

“Because today was the first time he saw you.””

A chill moved through me.

“He saw me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Dante hesitated.

“At the restaurant.””

I remembered.

The stranger near the entrance.

The man who had looked at me for too long.

I thought nothing of it.

Now I wondered.

“Was he there?””

Rico nodded.

“He was.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Then why didn’t he take me?””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother whispered:

“Because he wanted to know if you were worth killing.””

The words made my skin crawl.

Rico stepped closer.

“Clara.””

I looked at him.

“You’re coming with me.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re ordering me?””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“I’m asking.””

That surprised me.

“Why?””

His eyes lowered.

“Because Isabella spent her last days trying to protect you.””

He looked back at me.

“And I failed her once.””

A pause.

“I won’t fail her again.””

The Moretti estate was nothing like I expected.

I expected something cold.

A place filled with guards and marble statues.

Instead, it was a beautiful old house surrounded by trees and silence.

The kind of place where children should run through gardens.

The kind of place where Leo should have grown up with his mother.

But he hadn’t.

He had grown up with memories.

And loss.

The moment we entered, Leo ran toward me.

“Clara!””

I caught him before he reached the stairs.

He hugged my legs.

Rico stopped behind him.

Watching.

“You’re staying?””

The question came from Leo.

I looked down.

“I don’t know.””

His face immediately changed.

The fear returned.

Not panic.

Something quieter.

The fear of losing someone.

I crouched.

“Hey.””

He looked at me.

“I didn’t say goodbye.””

“You go?””

“Not tonight.””

He nodded.

Satisfied.

Then he whispered:

“Daddy is happy when you’re here.””

I looked up.

Rico looked away.

Like the words embarrassed him.

Later that night, I couldn’t sleep.

Too many questions.

Too many secrets.

I walked downstairs and found Rico sitting alone in the dark.

No guards.

No business calls.

Just him.

Holding a small photograph.

“Is that Isabella?””

He looked up.

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“She was beautiful.””

“She was.””

His thumb brushed over the picture.

“She hated expensive clothes.””

I smiled slightly.

“That surprises me.””

“She said people spent too much time trying to look important.””

He looked at the photograph.

“She used to steal my jackets because she said mine were warmer.””

I sat across from him.

“You loved her.””

“Yes.””

The answer came instantly.

No hesitation.

“She was the only person who never wanted anything from me.””

I looked at him.

“She wanted a family.””

His eyes lifted.

“She wanted you.””

A silence passed.

Then he said something I never expected.

“I don’t know how to be your father.””

My chest tightened.

“I don’t know how to be your daughter.””

For a moment, we just sat there.

Two strangers connected by a woman who was gone.

Then Rico’s phone rang.

He answered immediately.

“Dante?””

His expression changed.

“What happened?””

I watched his face become unreadable.

Then dangerous.

“Send everyone.””

He stood.

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

The fear in his eyes returned.

Not for himself.

For me.

“Matteo left a message.””

“What message?””

Rico looked down at his phone.

A single photograph appeared on the screen.

My apartment.

My front door.

Taken tonight.

May you like

Underneath it were six words.

*I know where my niece sleeps.*
