Chapter 9: The Truth That Changed Everything

I agreed to meet Linda.

Not because I trusted her.

I didn’t.

Not anymore.

But because I was tired of being trapped between half-truths.

Everyone had pieces of the story.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone decided what I was allowed to hear.

That ended now.

We met at a small café across town.

Linda was already sitting there.

She looked older.

Tired.

Nothing like the confident woman who used to criticize my cooking and tell me how to raise my own child.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Emma.””

I stayed standing.

“Say what you came to say.””

Her face tightened.

“I deserve that.””

I almost laughed.

At least she admitted it.

She sat down.

“I know you hate me.””

“I don’t hate you.””

That surprised her.

“I just don’t trust you.””

She looked down.

“That’s worse.””

“Yes.””

For a moment, she seemed to accept it.

Then she placed a folder on the table.

“I did something terrible.””

I waited.

“I reported the company.””

I already knew.

But hearing her admit it made it real.

“Why?””

She looked embarrassed.

“Because I thought I was saving my son.””

I shook my head.

“You destroyed his life.””

“I know.””

“Why does everyone say that after?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because we’re selfish before we understand the damage.””

That answer was too honest.

And I hated that.

Because it made her human.

“I wanted Ethan to lose control,” she continued.

“Why?””

“Because he was becoming like his father.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She opened the folder.

Inside was an old photograph.

A man I had never met.

Ethan’s father.

“He hid everything from me for years.””

Linda touched the photo.

“He made mistakes and expected everyone else to fix them.””

I looked at her.

“And you thought Ethan was doing the same?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell him to leave me?””

Her face collapsed.

“Because I was wrong.””

The words shocked me.

“I thought if he walked away before things got worse, he could rebuild.””

I stared.

“You encouraged him to abandon his pregnant wife.””

“I know.””

“Do you understand what that did to me?””

She nodded.

“I do now.””

I looked away.

Then she said:

“But I wasn’t the reason he left.””

I turned back.

“What?””

She pushed another document toward me.

“This is what I found.””

I read it.

And my hands went numb.

It was a medical report.

From the night Lily was born.

But this one was different.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

A note.

A handwritten note.

*Father informed of possible emergency. Father refused contact until confirmation of delivery.*

I looked at Linda.

“What is this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“This is why Ethan ran.””

My heart pounded.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“He thought I was going to die.””

“He thought he couldn’t handle watching it happen.””

I stared at the paper.

Suddenly, pieces started connecting.

The fear.

The hospital.

The running.

The silence.

But one question remained.

“If he loved me, why didn’t he come back?””

Linda looked down.

“Because someone told him not to.””

My breathing stopped.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your father.””

I froze.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“Not because he wanted Ethan to leave you.””

“Then why?””

“Because your father knew Ethan’s fear.””

I felt confused.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

She took a deep breath.

“He told Ethan that if he ran once, he would run every time life became difficult.””

I stared at her.

“And?””

“He told him to come back only when he was ready to face what he had done.””

I looked down.

My father.

Even after he was gone, he had tried to protect me.

But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.

“Why didn’t Ethan tell me?””

Linda looked at me.

“Because he didn’t come back alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

She reached into the folder.

She pulled out another photo.

This one was from the hospital hallway.

Ethan.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I had never expected.

Someone whose identity made my entire body go cold.

Because beside Ethan that night…

was my best friend, Rachel.

I stared at the picture.

“No.””

Linda whispered:

“She was the person he was protecting.””

My hands started shaking.

Rachel.

The woman who listened to me cry.

The woman who told me I deserved better.

The woman who encouraged me to leave Ethan.

I looked at the photo again.

“Why?””

Linda didn’t answer.

Because the answer wasn’t hers to give.

That night, I went home and confronted Ethan.

He was sitting in the dark living room.

He knew.

The second he saw my face, he knew.

“Emma…”

I dropped the photo on the table.

“Tell me the truth.””

His face went pale.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“Not explanations.””

I stepped closer.

“Truth.””

He looked at the photograph.

Then closed his eyes.

And whispered:

“Rachel wasn’t there because of me.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She was there because of you.””

I stared.

“What are you talking about?””

His voice broke.

“Rachel was the one who called me that night.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because she had something to tell me.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

May you like

And the next words destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“She told me Lily might not be my daughter.””
