Chapter 4: The Truth He Buried

“Your labor wasn’t the reason I left you there.””

Ethan’s words hung in the living room like smoke.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

The bills were still lying on the floor between us.

The same bills that had once represented the worst moment of my life.

Now he was telling me there was something worse.

Something I didn’t know.

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked like he wanted to disappear.

His eyes moved from me to the money, then back to my face.

“I was scared.””

I crossed my arms.

“You already said that.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I mean I was terrified.””

I waited.

Because after everything he had done, I wasn’t going to rescue him from his own confession.

He wiped his face with both hands.

“That night, when you told me you were in labor, I got a call.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What kind of call?””

He looked away.

“From my business partner.””

I said nothing.

“He told me we were about to lose everything.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“So while I was on the floor begging you to take me to the hospital, you were worried about money?””

His face twisted.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.

“Yes,” he repeated quietly.

“I panicked.””

I stepped closer.

“You panicked?””

He nodded.

“I thought if I left, everything would collapse.””

I stared at him.

“And you decided your company was more important than your wife and unborn child?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

But I shook my head.

“You did.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

The admission surprised me.

Ethan was not a man who apologized easily.

He was a man who explained.

A man who defended.

A man who could turn every mistake into someone else’s misunderstanding.

But now he just sat there.

Broken.

And somehow that made me angrier.

Because where was this version of him six months ago?

Where was this man when I was bleeding and terrified?

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked.

He swallowed.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I stared at him.

“You were ashamed?””

“Yes.””

“You should have been.””

His eyes closed.

I saw the pain cross his face.

But I didn’t stop.

“You weren’t ashamed when you left me alone. You weren’t ashamed when you walked into the hospital hours later carrying flowers like that fixed anything.””

“I know.””

“You weren’t ashamed when you pretended everything was fine.””

“I know.””

“Then what changed?””

He looked at me.

And for once, he didn’t have an answer.

The silence said enough.

Fear changed him.

Not love.

Not regret.

Fear.

I turned away.

“I don’t understand why you’re telling me this now.””

“Because there’s more.””

My hand froze on the back of the chair.

More.

That word always meant something terrible.

“What more?””

Ethan stood slowly.

He walked toward the kitchen counter.

His fingers brushed the surface.

The same place where he had thrown the money.

“I didn’t leave because I had a work call.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He closed his eyes.

“I lied.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What was the real reason?””

He took a long breath.

“I received a message from someone.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me I wasn’t going to like the answer.

“Your father.””

I went still.

My father had passed away two years before Lily was born.

The mention of him felt like someone had opened an old wound.

“What about my father?””

Ethan looked nervous.

“He knew about the company problems.””

I frowned.

“My father wasn’t involved in your business.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“He wasn’t.””

“Then why would he call you?””

Ethan looked down.

“Because he knew something about me.””

The room became silent.

“What are you talking about?””

He sat down.

“I need to explain everything.””

I didn’t sit.

I didn’t comfort him.

I simply stood there and waited.

“My company wasn’t failing because of bad luck.””

I felt a chill.

“Then why?””

His voice became quiet.

“Because I made a mistake before we got married.””

“What kind of mistake?””

He looked at me.

“One that your father found out about.””

My mind raced.

My father had always liked Ethan.

He had supported our marriage.

He had told me I was lucky to find someone ambitious.

Someone hardworking.

Someone who would build a future with me.

Was he wrong?

“Why would my father keep this from me?””

Ethan looked away.

“Because he promised me he wouldn’t tell you.””

My chest tightened.

“What did he know?””

Ethan’s eyes filled with regret.

“Emma…”

“Tell me.””

He looked at the floor.

“Before I met you, I was drowning in debt.””

I waited.

“And I didn’t tell you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Clearly.””

“I fixed it.””

“How?””

His silence was the answer.

I felt cold.

“How, Ethan?””

He whispered:

“Your father paid it.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The room felt smaller.

“My father?””

He nodded.

“He gave me money.””

“How much?””

“A lot.””

I looked around the house.

The walls.

The furniture.

The life I thought we built together.

Suddenly everything felt different.

“You married me because of him?””

His head snapped up.

“No.””

But the speed of his answer didn’t convince me.

“Then why?””

“Because I loved you.””

I stared at him.

“Did you?””

His expression broke.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you hide this?””

“Because I was afraid you would think I used you.””

I stepped back.

“And now?””

He looked at me.

“Now I know I should have told you.””

I wanted to believe him.

A part of me wanted to.

Because despite everything, this was the man I had loved.

The man I had imagined growing old with.

But love doesn’t erase damage.

And apologies don’t rebuild trust overnight.

I picked up the bills from the floor.

Ethan watched me.

“Emma.””

I folded them carefully.

“You don’t get to decide when the truth comes out.””

“I know.””

“You don’t get to hurt me and then bring me the explanation when you need something.””

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“Then understand this.””

His eyes met mine.

“You are not asking me to save you.””

He swallowed.

“You’re asking me to forget who you were when I needed saving.””

The guilt on his face was almost painful to see.

Almost.

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Is this Emma Carter?””

“Yes.””

There was a pause.

Then:

“I’m sorry, but you need to know the truth about what Ethan did after he left you at the hospital.””

My entire body went cold.

I looked at Ethan.

His face had changed.

May you like

He knew exactly who was calling.

And suddenly, I wasn’t sure his biggest secret was the one he had just confessed.
