Chapter 8: The Betrayal Behind the Door
The name on the document burned into my mind.
Linda Carter.
Ethan’s mother.
I looked at him.
“No.””
He stared at the page.
His face emptied.
“My mother?””
Claire nodded.
“I found the records myself.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Ethan stood.
“My mother would never do that.””
I almost smiled.
Because even now.
Even after everything.
He still wanted to believe the best about her.
“You said the same thing about yourself,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
The words hurt because he knew they were true.
Claire continued.
“Linda didn’t report the company because she wanted Ethan arrested.””
“Then why?””
“She wanted control.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Claire opened another file.
“Your mother believed Ethan was going to lose everything because of his choices.””
“So she exposed him?””
“She believed forcing him into a crisis would make him come back to her.””
I stared.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Claire sighed.
“It does if you know Linda.””
Ethan sat down slowly.
“My mother always thought she knew what was best for me.””
I looked at him.
“And you let her.””
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
Claire looked at me.
“She also knew about the night you went into labor.””
My jaw tightened.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She was the person Ethan called.””
I turned to Ethan.
“You called your mother?””
He looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
“You called your mother while your wife was begging you for help?””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You keep saying that.””
I pointed toward the kitchen.
“You keep saying you know.””
I stepped closer.
“But you don’t know what it feels like to be on that floor.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t know what it feels like to wonder if the person you love would even notice if you disappeared.””
Silence.
Then Ethan whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked away.
Because this apology was different.
Not because it fixed anything.
But because for the first time, he wasn’t defending himself.
He was finally seeing me.
And that was almost harder.
Claire stood.
“I should leave.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because I’ve caused enough damage.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She looked surprised.
“You didn’t cause this.””
I glanced at Ethan.
“He did.””
Ethan accepted that.
And somehow, that was the first honest thing he had done.
After Claire left, the house became painfully quiet.
Lily was asleep upstairs.
The world outside continued like nothing had happened.
Cars drove by.
People walked their dogs.
Neighbors laughed.
And inside our house, everything was changing.
Ethan sat at the table.
The same table where he had ignored me.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””
I looked out the window.
“Good.””
He nodded.
“I just want you to know something.””
“What?””
“I did love you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Don’t.””
“I did.””
“Maybe.””
I turned around.
“Maybe you loved me.””
His expression broke.
“But you loved yourself more.””
He looked down.
“That’s fair.””
A strange feeling passed through me.
Because six months ago, he would have argued.
Now he just accepted the pain.
But acceptance didn’t undo the damage.
The next morning, I woke up to find Ethan sitting outside Lily’s room.
He was holding one of her tiny blankets.
“What are you doing?””
He looked up.
“I was watching her sleep.””
I leaned against the door.
“Why?””
He smiled sadly.
“Because I missed so much.””
The honesty almost hurt.
“You’re still her father.””
“I know.””
“You can still be there.””
He looked at me.
“Can I?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
Later that afternoon, Ethan received a phone call.
I watched his face change.
“What happened?””
He stood slowly.
“It’s my mother.””
“What about her?””
He looked at the phone.
“She wants to meet.””
I felt something uneasy.
“Why?””
He hesitated.
“She says she has proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He looked at me.
“Proof that she wasn’t the one who betrayed us.””
I frowned.
“Then who was?””
He didn’t answer.
Because another message appeared on his phone.
From Linda.
He read it.
Then slowly handed me the screen.
The message said:
*“Emma, before you hate me, you need to know the truth. Ethan has been lying about the night Lily was born. He wasn’t protecting you. He was protecting someone else.””*
I looked at Ethan.
Someone else?
My heart sank.
“Who?””
He looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
But I knew.
I had seen that fear before.
May you like
And this time, it wasn’t guilt.
It was dread.
