Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Plan
The video froze.
A single frame.
A single face.
And suddenly the entire world felt unstable.
Because the person standing beside my mother’s crashed car wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t Victor Hale.
It wasn’t some unknown enemy from my father’s past.
It was Diane Whitmore.
Vanessa’s mother.
My first instinct was disbelief.
My mind rejected it.
No.
That couldn’t be right.
Diane was cruel.
She was arrogant.
She was selfish.
But a murderer?
No.
I looked at my father.
His expression told me he had seen enough.
He knew.
“Dad.””
He didn’t answer.
“Tell me I’m wrong.””
He looked at me.
And that was the moment I knew.
I wasn’t wrong.
The ballroom erupted.
People started talking at once.
Guests moved away from Diane.
Someone dropped a glass.
The sound shattered through the room.
Diane looked around.
“No.””
Her voice was small.
“No, this is fake.””
Nobody responded.
She pointed at the screen.
“This is edited.””
My father finally spoke.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Diane stared at him.
“You don’t know that.””
“I do.””
Her face changed.
“You knew?””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“I suspected.””
The word made me angry.
“You suspected?””
I stepped toward him.
“You suspected she was involved with my mother’s death and you let her daughter into my life?””
My father looked devastated.
“I didn’t know Vanessa was connected to her.””
“You didn’t know?””
His silence hurt.
Because he was right.
He didn’t know.
But neither did I.
And that was the problem.
For years, everyone had been making choices about my life while keeping me in the dark.
Diane suddenly turned toward Vanessa.
“Say something.””
Vanessa looked horrified.
“Mom…”
“Tell them this isn’t true.””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
Then at her mother.
“I don’t know.””
The answer destroyed Diane.
“You don’t know?””
Vanessa stepped back.
“You lied to me too.””
For the first time, Diane looked like a mother who had lost control.
Not a powerful woman.
Not a social figure.
Just someone afraid.
“Vanessa, listen to me.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You knew about my marriage?””
Diane didn’t answer.
“You knew about Ethan’s father?””
Still nothing.
“You knew about the contract?””
Silence.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
The betrayal was finally reaching her.
My father walked toward the screen.
“Where did this come from?””
I looked at my phone.
“I don’t know.””
A voice came from behind us.
“I sent it.””
Everyone turned.
Claire.
The wedding planner.
She stood near the entrance.
My eyes narrowed.
“You?””
She nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
My father stared.
“Claire.””
“I should have told you sooner.””
“Why didn’t you?””
She looked at Diane.
“Because I needed proof.””
The room went quiet.
She continued:
“Three months ago, I discovered someone was trying to access Bennett Foundation records.””
My father’s face hardened.
“Victor.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“And Diane?””
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“She was helping him.””
Diane shook her head.
“No.””
Claire reached into her folder.
“I have bank records.””
The room went silent.
She placed papers on a nearby table.
“Payments.””
Diane stared.
“You don’t understand.””
Claire looked at her.
“Then explain.””
Diane couldn’t.
Because the evidence was there.
My father picked up the papers.
His hands were steady.
But his face wasn’t.
“She was financing Victor.””
I looked at Diane.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Because of Emma.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked terrified.
“I heard them talking.””
Diane turned.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I heard you and Victor.””
Her voice cracked.
“You said if Emma ever came back, everything would be ruined.””
My father went still.
“Emma is alive?””
Nobody moved.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I thought she was dead.””
My father grabbed the table.
“Where did you hear that?””
Vanessa looked at her mother.
“She told me.””
Diane closed her eyes.
And suddenly, everything changed again.
Because if Emma was alive...
Then the video wasn’t just a warning.
It was a message.
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
This time, there was a name.
*Emma.*
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Ethan, I’m sorry you had to learn the truth this way. Meet me alone. Your father cannot know.*
I stared at the screen.
My father noticed.
“What is it?””
I locked the phone.
“Nothing.””
The lie felt wrong.
But something inside me told me not to show him.
Because if Emma was telling the truth...

Then my father wasn’t the only person hiding secrets.
And the next secret could destroy everything I thought I knew about my family.
