Chapter 6: The Woman Nobody Mentioned

The hallway became silent.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Silent like the moment before a storm.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who is Emma Whitmore?””

She didn’t answer.

That scared me.

Because Vanessa always had something to say.

She had an explanation for everything.

But now?

Nothing.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes moved away.

“Ethan…”

“Who is Emma Whitmore?””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

The lie came too quickly.

Too perfectly.

I stared at her.

“You know.””

“No.””

“You do.””

Her face tightened.

“I’ve heard the name.””

“From who?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I walked back into the ballroom.

My father was still standing where I left him.

The moment he saw my expression, he knew.

“What happened?””

I held up the paper.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“Where did you get that?””

I felt my stomach twist.

“Everyone keeps asking me where things come from.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m asking you something now.””

His eyes lowered.

“Ethan.””

“Who is Emma Whitmore?””

The room around us seemed to disappear.

My father went completely still.

And that scared me more than any answer could have.

“Dad.””

He looked away.

“Not here.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s what everyone says when the truth is ugly.””

His eyes closed.

“Ethan.””

“Who is she?””

My father took a deep breath.

Then he said:

“She was your mother’s best friend.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the paper again.

“Why would someone tell me to ask about her?””

My father didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

I could see it.

“Dad.””

He sat down slowly.

For the first time that night, he looked old.

Not weak.

Just tired.

“After your mother died, I made a lot of decisions.””

I listened.

“Some good.””

He paused.

“Some terrible.””

“What does Emma have to do with that?””

My father looked at me.

“Everything.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Explain.””

He looked toward the ballroom.

Toward the people who had gathered.

Toward Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Emma was supposed to inherit part of Bennett Industries.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She helped build the company with me.””

“But you said Victor was your partner.””

“He was.””

“And Emma?””

My father’s voice softened.

“Emma was more than that.””

I waited.

Then he said the sentence I never expected.

“She was your mother’s sister.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

He nodded.

“Your aunt.””

I stared at him.

“I don’t have an aunt.””

“You did.””

The words hurt.

Because suddenly my entire childhood felt incomplete.

“Why didn’t I know?””

My father looked devastated.

“Because she disappeared.””

“Why?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

Silence.

Then:

“I chose to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone says they’re protecting me while hiding my entire life.””

My father accepted the anger.

He didn’t defend himself.

That almost made it worse.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology stopped me.

Because my father rarely apologized.

Not because he was proud.

Because he was careful.

He only apologized when he truly believed he had failed.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at me.

“That you would see me differently.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Emma hated me.””

The words landed heavily.

“Why?””

My father looked toward Vanessa.

Then toward Diane.

And finally back at me.

“Because she believed I was responsible for your mother’s death.””

The room went quiet.

I couldn’t breathe.

“My mother died in an accident.””

“Yes.””

“So why would she think that?””

My father looked away.

“Because she knew something I never told you.””

“What?””

Before he could answer, the ballroom lights flickered.

Everyone looked up.

The large screen behind the wedding altar suddenly turned on.

A video appeared.

The guests gasped.

A woman’s face filled the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

My father stood immediately.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Who is that?””

His voice was barely audible.

“Emma.””

The woman on the screen looked directly into the camera.

Then she spoke.

“If Ethan is watching this, it means Arthur finally ran out of places to hide.””

My father went pale.

The entire ballroom listened.

The woman continued:

“Ethan, there is something your father never told you about the night your mother died.””

My heart stopped.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Diane stepped backward.

And my father whispered the words I would never forget.

“She wasn’t supposed to find out this way.””

The video continued.

And Emma’s next sentence changed everything.

“Your mother didn’t die because of an accident.””

The screen went black.

The room exploded with whispers.

And I stood there, staring at my father.

Waiting for him to tell me the truth.

But the look on his face told me one thing.

Whatever happened that night...

He had been carrying it alone for years.
