Chapter 5: The Secret Partner
My father’s voice was barely above a whisper.
But everyone near us heard it.
“I know that man.””
I looked at the picture again.
The stranger sitting across from Diane and Vanessa looked like someone who belonged in expensive restaurants and private meetings.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
Cold expression.
Someone who smiled without warmth.
“Who is he?”” I asked.
My father didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything else.
Because my father was not someone who hesitated.
He was the man who fixed broken engines without instructions.
The man who rebuilt our entire kitchen by himself.
The man who always had an answer.
But now?
He looked uncertain.
“Dad?””
He took the phone from my hand.
His eyes moved across the image.
Then he closed his eyes.
“Victor Hale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to my father.
I could see it.
“Who is Victor Hale?””
My father handed the phone back.
“Someone I trusted.””
Past tense.
I noticed.
“You trusted him?””
“Years ago.””
“What happened?””
Before he could answer, Claire, the wedding planner, walked toward us.
“Mr. Bennett.””
My father looked at her.
“Can you give us a moment?””
She nodded.
But before leaving, she glanced at my phone.
Her face changed.
“You have that picture?””
My eyebrows lifted.
“You know him too?””
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“I know of him.””
That answer bothered me.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone except me.
I turned back to my father.
“Start talking.””
He looked around the ballroom.
At the guests.
At the decorations.
At the wedding that had fallen apart in front of everyone.
Then he sighed.
“Victor was my business partner.””
I froze.
“Business partner?””
“Yes.””
“You never mentioned him.””
“Because I removed him from my life.””
“Why?””
My father looked down.
“Because he betrayed me.””
The room felt colder.
“What did he do?””
My father was silent.
Then:
“He tried to take everything.””
I waited.
“He failed.””
“But he’s back.””
“Yes.””
“And he’s working with Vanessa and Diane.””
My father nodded slowly.
“I believe so.””
I felt sick.
The woman I was supposed to marry.
Her mother.
And a man who had tried to destroy my father.
All connected.
“Why tonight?””
My father looked at the wedding altar.
“I think tonight was the point.””
“What do you mean?””
He hesitated.
“Ethan, there are things about my company you don’t know.””
“I’m listening.””
“When I retired, I didn’t disappear.””
He looked at Claire.
“I created a trust.””
I frowned.
“A trust?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
His expression became serious.
“For my family.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
“It means anyone who married into the Bennett family would have access to certain benefits.””
I understood.
The document.
Vanessa’s agreement.
“They weren’t just after me.””
“No.””
My father’s eyes met mine.
“They were after what came with you.””
The realization was painful.
Because suddenly every memory felt different.
Every conversation.
Every question.
Every moment.
I remembered Vanessa asking, “Does your father own the house?””
I remembered Diane saying, “A man’s background tells you everything.””
I remembered Vanessa laughing when I said my father didn’t care about money.
She didn’t think it was admirable.
She thought it was foolish.
A voice interrupted us.
“Ethan.””
I turned.
Vanessa stood there alone.
Her makeup was slightly ruined.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
“Can we talk?””
I looked at my father.
He nodded.
“Go.””
I followed her outside the ballroom.
The hallway was quiet.
The music from the wedding continued faintly in the background.
A strange sound.
Like a celebration happening for someone else.
Vanessa stopped near the window.
“I know how this looks.””
I almost smiled.
“How does it look?””
She looked down.
“Bad.””
“Accurate.””
She closed her eyes.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary.””
She looked at me.
“This was bigger.””
“Yes.””
“I was scared.””
I frowned.
“Of what?””
She looked away.
“My family.””
I said nothing.
“My mother always controlled everything.””
“And you let her?””
Tears formed in her eyes.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“How?””
She didn’t answer.
Because there was no answer.
She couldn’t fix a plan she was part of.
“You were going to marry me.””
“Yes.””
“While hiding this.””
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked at me.
“After we were married.””
I felt numb.
“After?””
“I thought once we were together, things would be different.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“Ethan, I do love you.””
I looked at her.
“Then why did you need a contract?””
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
She whispered:
“Of losing everything.””
I stared at her.
And finally understood.
Vanessa wasn’t afraid of losing me.
She was afraid of losing the life she imagined with me.
Before I could answer, the ballroom doors opened behind us.
A security guard walked out holding an envelope.
“Mr. Bennett?””
I turned.
“Yes?””
He looked nervous.
“This was delivered for you.””
I took it.
No name.
No return address.
Just my father’s company logo stamped on the front.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
A single sentence.
My blood ran cold.
*Your father didn’t tell you the real reason he left the company. Ask him about Emma Whitmore.*
I looked up.
Vanessa’s face had gone completely pale.
May you like
Because she knew that name.
And I knew it wasn’t a coincidence.
