Chapter 14: The Memory He Buried

The safe house was silent.

Too silent.

After everything that happened, nobody celebrated.

The truth had finally come out.

But somehow…

It created more questions.

Adrian sat alone.

Staring at the floor.

I walked toward him.

“Adrian.””

He didn’t look up.

“I remember.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“The fire.””

Everyone nearby stopped.

Lucas looked at him.

“You remember?””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“Not everything.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I spent years believing my mind was protecting me.””

He looked at me.

“But it was hiding something.””

I sat across from him.

“What happened?””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“I was fourteen.””

His voice became quieter.

“I woke up because I smelled smoke.””

The room disappeared.

For a moment, we were all there.

In the past.

“I ran upstairs.””

Adrian swallowed.

“I found Isabella.””

My breath caught.

“You found me?””

“Yes.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“You were crying.””

A tear escaped.

“You kept saying you were scared.””

I touched the necklace.

“What did you do?””

“I carried you.””

The room became still.

“Then what?””

Adrian looked at Lucas.

“My brother found us.””

Lucas nodded.

“I remember.””

Adrian continued.

“He told me to take her outside.””

“But you didn’t?””

Adrian looked broken.

“I tried.””

The silence hurt.

“Then someone grabbed me.””

“Who?””

Adrian shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

His hands trembled.

“But I remember a voice.””

“What voice?””

He looked at me.

“Someone said…”

A pause.

“Let the boy live.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Adrian looked away.

“Because they needed someone to blame.””

Lucas stepped closer.

“They used you.””

Adrian nodded.

“They took my memories.””

Everyone stared.

“What?””

Adrian explained.

“After the fire, they told me Lucas started it.””

“They manipulated you.””

“Yes.””

Lucas looked at the ground.

“I tried to come back.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because they told me you were dead.””

The brothers stared at each other.

Fifteen years of hatred.

Built on lies.

Slowly collapsing.

Then Alexander entered.

Weak but alive.

“I need to tell you something else.””

Nobody moved.

He held a folder.

“The fire wasn’t just about money.””

He placed the folder down.

“Your grandfather discovered Isabella carried something.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“A key.””

I looked confused.

“What key?””

Alexander opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Me as a child.

Wearing the necklace.

“The necklace.””

I touched it.

“My mother gave me this.””

Alexander nodded.

“It contains access to something.””

Adrian looked at the necklace.

“What?””

“The evidence.””

Everyone went silent.

“Evidence of everything your grandfather did.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“And that’s why he wanted her dead.””

I removed the necklace carefully.

Inside the pendant was a tiny compartment.

A hidden chip.

My entire life.

Hidden around my neck.

Adrian looked at me.

“You carried the truth for ten years.””

I whispered:

“Without knowing.””

Before anyone could say anything, every phone in the room buzzed.

A news alert.

The headline appeared.

*KANE EMPIRE COLLAPSES AFTER SECRET FILES LEAKED.*

For the first time in years…

The powerful were falling.

Then another message appeared.

From an unknown sender.

One sentence.

*THE FILES ARE FAKE.*

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

A second message arrived.

A photograph.

A man standing outside the courthouse.

A man everyone thought was dead.

Adrian stared.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

May you like

He whispered:

“My father.””
