Chapter 13: The Grandfather’s Game

The old man stood in the doorway like he owned the air around him.

Nobody moved.

Not even Adrian.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because Adrian Kane was not a man who froze.

But now he looked like a child seeing a nightmare come back to life.

The old man smiled.

“Adrian.””

Adrian’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Grandfather.””

The word felt heavy.

Like it carried years of pain.

The man walked inside slowly.

“My family has become emotional.””

Vincent immediately stepped backward.

The old man noticed.

“You disappoint me, Vincent.””

Vincent’s face tightened.

“I did everything you asked.””

“And yet you failed.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

He was watching every movement.

Every breath.

Like he was waiting for the first sign of danger.

The old man looked at me.

“Isabella Whitmore.””

I hated how easily he said my name.

“You were supposed to disappear.””

My hands curled into fists.

“I spent ten years believing I had nobody.””

He smiled.

“That was the point.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Why?””

The old man turned.

“Why what?””

“Why destroy all of us?””

The old man laughed softly.

“Destroy?””

He looked around.

“You call this destruction?””

His eyes moved toward Adrian.

“I created you.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“No.””

“Yes.””

The old man walked closer.

“I removed weakness.””

Nobody spoke.

“You had too much love. Too much loyalty. Too much innocence.””

He pointed at Lucas.

“Especially him.””

Lucas stared at him.

“You used me.””

“Of course.””

The old man didn’t even pretend.

“You were useful.””

My stomach turned.

“You ruined children’s lives.””

The old man looked at me.

“No.””

His expression became colder.

“I prepared them.””

I stepped forward.

“You burned my family.””

“I protected my empire.””

The answer was so simple.

So empty.

That was what made him terrifying.

Alexander moved.

“You destroyed everything.””

The old man looked at him.

“And you made the mistake of thinking money gave you power.””

Alexander’s face changed.

“You were afraid of me.””

“No.””

The old man smiled.

“I was afraid of what you would reveal.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“I have the files.””

Everyone looked at her.

The old man’s expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Rachel held up a drive.

“Everything.””

The old man stared.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“But I will give it to the world.””

The old man sighed.

“What a disappointing choice.””

Then the windows shattered.

Gunfire erupted.

Everyone dropped.

Adrian grabbed my arm and pulled me behind cover.

Marco and his men responded immediately.

The room became chaos.

Smoke.

Shouting.

Glass everywhere.

I lost sight of everyone.

Then I saw the old man.

Walking calmly through the violence.

Like none of it mattered.

He reached Rachel.

She froze.

He took the drive from her hand.

“You always were weak.””

Rachel looked at him.

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I was scared.””

A pause.

“But I’m not anymore.””

She pressed a button on a small device.

The old man looked down.

“What did you do?””

Rachel smiled sadly.

“I sent the files.””

For the first time…

He looked angry.

Not annoyed.

Not disappointed.

Angry.

A phone rang.

One of his men answered.

Then immediately lowered the phone.

“Sir…”

The old man knew.

The information was already gone.

Across the world.

His empire was collapsing.

He looked at Rachel.

Then at me.

“This changes nothing.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“It changes everything.””

The old man looked at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

The old man smiled.

“Your father was never the reason your family fell.””

He looked at me.

“Your mother wasn’t either.””

Then he looked at Adrian.

“The reason everything happened…”

A pause.

“Was you.””

Adrian froze.

I turned toward him.

“What?””

The old man smiled.

“Ask him.””

Nobody moved.

The old man continued:

“Ask Adrian what he remembers from the night of the fire.””

Adrian’s face changed.

A memory.

Pain.

Confusion.

The old man was taken away moments later.

May you like

But his final words stayed.

*It was you.*
