Chapter 12: The Last Kane Secret
The safe house became a battlefield of silence.
Nobody trusted anyone.
Not Vincent.
Not Alexander.
Not even the people standing beside me.
Because every person in my life had hidden something.
Adrian looked at Vincent.
“You knew.””
Vincent didn’t deny it.
“I knew many things.””
“You knew my grandfather was alive?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me hunt you?””
Vincent looked away.
“I was trying to survive.””
Adrian laughed coldly.
“You’re asking for sympathy?””
“No.””
Vincent looked at him.
“I’m asking you to understand.””
Nobody expected those words.
Not from him.
Not from the man who had spent years terrifying everyone.
“I was never the king,” Vincent continued.
“I was the soldier.””
Lucas stepped forward.
“And you enjoyed it.””
Vincent looked at him.
“You have no idea what he did.””
Lucas froze.
I noticed.
“You know something.””
Lucas didn’t answer.
Adrian looked between them.
“Tell me.””
Lucas stared at the floor.
“Your grandfather found out I knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
Lucas looked at Adrian.
“That he wasn’t just controlling the business.””
A pause.
“He was controlling our family.””
The room became quiet.
“How?””
Lucas continued.
“He manipulated your father. He manipulated Vincent. He manipulated me.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You expect me to believe everyone was a victim?””
“No.””
Lucas looked at him.
“I expect you to understand that monsters don’t always look like monsters.””
The words stayed with me.
Because they were true.
Alexander stepped forward.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
He looked at me.
“Isabella…”
The way he said my name felt like a goodbye.
“The reason they wanted you dead wasn’t only because of inheritance.””
My heart tightened.
“Then why?””
He reached into his coat.
And pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this the night of the fire.””
Inside was a document.
A list of names.
A list of payments.
Politicians.
Judges.
Police officials.
And at the bottom…
A name I recognized.
Rachel Voss.
Adrian took the paper.
“She worked for them.””
Alexander nodded.
“She wasn’t just the family lawyer.””
“Then what was she?””
Alexander looked at me.
“The person who betrayed your mother.””
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
“She helped arrange everything.””
Adrian stared.
“Why would she call us then?””
Alexander’s face changed.
“Because she’s afraid.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door.
Everyone reached for weapons.
Then the front door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Rachel Voss.
Her face was bruised.
Her clothes torn.
She looked at all of us.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody moved.
Adrian aimed his weapon.
“You have a lot to explain.””
Rachel nodded.
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“I’m the reason Isabella survived.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
Rachel started crying.
“Your mother asked me to help her escape.””
Evelyn looked shocked.
“You knew?””
Rachel nodded.
“But I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Rachel looked toward the window.
“I told the wrong person.””
A chill went through me.
“Who?””
Rachel whispered:
“Your grandfather.””
The lights suddenly shut off.
Again.
A familiar feeling.
Like the night everything changed.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“After all these years…”
Everyone froze.
The voice was old.
Calm.
Powerful.
“And my family still cannot keep a simple secret.””
A single light turned on.
An elderly man stood in the doorway.
Adrian stared.
Lucas stepped back.
Vincent looked terrified.
Alexander whispered:
“No…”
The man smiled.
“Hello, children.””
His eyes landed on me.
“And hello, Isabella.””
He took one step forward.
“I believe it’s time my granddaughter learned the truth.””
May you like
He smiled.
“About who she really is.””
