Chapter 8: The Child Nobody Was Allowed to Remember

Nobody moved.
Sophia stood at the top of the staircase, holding the folder against her chest.
Eleanor looked as if she'd seen a ghost.
“Sophia,” she whispered.
“Put that down.””
Sophia laughed bitterly.
“You've spent my entire life telling people I was dead. Why should I listen to you now?””
Arthur slowly stepped away from the table.
I pulled Noah behind me.
“What's happening?”” he whispered.
“Stay close.””
Eleanor took a step forward.
“You don't understand what you're doing.””
Sophia raised the gun.
“I understand perfectly.””
Her hand was trembling.
“Don't come closer.””
Eleanor stopped.
For several seconds, the room remained silent.
Then Sophia looked at me.
“Ryan, the documents you signed are worthless.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“They're copies. The original trust documents are in this folder.””
She lifted it.
“And they contain something your father never intended anyone to discover.””
Eleanor's voice became sharp.
“Give me that folder.””
“No.””
“It's family property.””
Sophia smiled sadly.
“You stopped calling me family when I was three years old.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Sophia lowered the gun slightly.
“My mother gave birth to me before she married Thomas. He raised me as his daughter until I was two. Then he discovered that Eleanor had been secretly communicating with his business partner.””
I frowned.
“Arthur?””
“No,” Sophia said.
“A man named Victor Hayes.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were photographs, medical documents, and bank statements.
“Victor was my biological father.””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Sophia continued.
“Thomas discovered the affair. He threatened to expose everything. Eleanor begged him to keep me in the family because she was afraid of losing her inheritance.””
I looked at Eleanor.
“You knew?””
She didn't answer.
Sophia nodded.
“Thomas agreed, but only if Eleanor followed his rules. She was never allowed to contact Victor again. And I was never allowed to know who my real father was.””
I shook my head.
“How does that connect to Claire?””
Sophia pulled out another document.
“Because Victor Hayes was the man who helped Claire escape.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because he knew what Thomas was doing to the children. He had access to the hospital records, and he discovered the illegal transfers.””
Sophia looked toward Eleanor.
“Your father wasn't just trying to control the inheritance. He was using the children to hide a much larger financial crime.””
She placed several documents on the table.
I examined them.
They showed transfers from the Mitchell family trust to a series of companies.
The total exceeded sixty million dollars.
“What is this?””
Sophia answered.
“Money was being moved through accounts belonging to children who didn't legally exist.””
I looked at the names.
Emma.
Lily.
Grace.
Noah.
And another name.
*UNKNOWN MALE INFANT.*
I stared at the final entry.
“That's my son.””
Sophia nodded.
“Thomas used the children's identities to create accounts and move money without attracting attention.””
I looked at Eleanor.
“Did you know?””
She lifted her chin.
“Your father was a businessman. He did what was necessary.””
“Did you know?””
“Yes.””
Her answer was immediate.
I felt sick.
“How could you?””
Eleanor looked at me coldly.
“You think the world works because people are honest? Your father built an empire. He protected it.””
“And the children?””
“They were protected too.””
Sophia laughed.
“Protected? You locked Lily in a wall!””
Eleanor turned toward her.
“Because you were supposed to bring the documents to me.””
Sophia froze.
“What?””
Eleanor smiled faintly.
“You didn't think I knew about your little arrangement with Daniel?””
I looked toward Daniel.
He was standing near the front door.
His face had gone pale.
Eleanor continued.
“Daniel was never supposed to rescue Claire. He was supposed to keep her quiet. When he failed, Thomas made sure everyone believed he was dead.””
I turned toward Daniel.
“Is that true?””
He lowered his eyes.
“I was working for your father.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“From the beginning?””
Daniel nodded.
“I'm sorry.””
I stepped toward him.
“You helped take my children?””
“I helped move them away from Thomas. At first, I believed it was temporary.””
“And the hidden passage?””
His voice broke.
“I built it.””
I stared at him.
“You built the wall?””
“Yes.””
I wanted to hit him.
But Noah was still holding my hand.
I couldn't let him see me become another angry man in his life.
I looked toward Sophia.
“Why did you come here?””
She lowered the gun.
“Because I found something in the original documents.””
She opened the folder to the last page.
It contained a photograph.
A hospital nursery.
Four newborn babies lay in separate bassinets.
I counted them twice.
“Four?””
Sophia nodded.
“Claire gave birth to quadruplets.””
I felt the room spin.
“That's impossible.””
“No. Your father changed the records. He wanted the children separated so he could control their identities.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Where are the other two?””
“One is Lily. One is your son. The third is Emma.””
“And the fourth?””
Sophia looked at me.
“That's the child Eleanor has been hiding all these years.””
I turned toward my mother.
She didn't move.
“Who?””
Sophia answered.
“Me.””
I stared at her.
“You're not Claire's daughter.””
“No. I'm Eleanor's. But Thomas used my identity in the same hospital scheme because he needed another child whose records could be altered.””
She looked down.
“The fourth baby was never supposed to exist on paper.””
I shook my head.
“Then where is she?””
Sophia pointed toward the folder.
“Her name was Abigail.””
A silence fell over the room.
I looked at Eleanor.
“Who is Abigail?””
For the first time, my mother looked genuinely frightened.
She stepped backward.
Sophia raised the gun again.
“Tell him.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Don't.””
“Tell him!””
Eleanor's lips trembled.
Then she whispered:
“Abigail was the baby I lost.””
Sophia lowered the gun.
“What?””
Eleanor began crying.
“Thomas took her from me.””
I stared.
My mother continued.
“He told me the baby was stillborn. He said there had been complications. But I later discovered he had arranged for her to be transferred to another family.””
Sophia looked at her.
“You never told me.””
“Because I didn't know where she was!””
I felt a strange mixture of anger and pity.
For the first time, I wondered whether my mother had been a victim before becoming a villain.
But then Eleanor reached into her handbag.
Sophia shouted.
“DON'T!””
A small metallic object flashed in my mother's hand.
A remote control.
She pressed a button.
Somewhere upstairs, an alarm began screaming.
A second later, the lights went out.
Noah screamed.
I grabbed him and dropped behind the sofa.
A loud crash came from the hallway.
Then footsteps.
Multiple footsteps.
Someone shouted.
“Secure the children!””
Sophia fired one shot into the ceiling.
The room erupted into chaos.
Daniel grabbed my shoulder.
“Ryan, the basement!””
I pulled Noah toward the hallway.
“Where are the girls?””
“Melissa has them at the hospital.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Daniel shouted over the noise.
“She took them to Dr. Reed!””
I wanted to believe him.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Melissa.
Ryan, I have the girls. We're safe.
A second message arrived.
But someone is following us.
I looked toward the front entrance.
Two men were entering the house.
One carried a flashlight.
The other held a black bag.
Sophia grabbed my sleeve.
“Ryan, run!””
I pulled Noah toward the basement.
We reached the stairs just as another door slammed upstairs.
Then a familiar voice called from the darkness.
“Uncle Ryan?””
I froze.
It was a little girl.
A child's voice.
But Noah was already beside me.
I slowly turned toward the basement.
A small figure stood at the bottom of the stairs.
She was wearing a yellow dress.
Her hair was tangled.
And she looked exactly like the little girl in the photograph.
Abigail.
She looked at me with terrified eyes.

Then she whispered:
“Please don't let Grandma take me back.””
