Chapter 5: The Fourth Daughter

I ran upstairs so quickly that I nearly slipped on the carpet.
The screaming was coming from the bedroom.
Melissa was kneeling beside Lily, who was clutching a photograph with both hands.
Emma stood near the closet, crying.
Grace was pressed against the wall.
“What's happening?”” I demanded.
Lily pointed at the photograph.
“That's her!””
I crouched beside her.
“Who, sweetheart?””
“The lady from the car.””
I looked at the picture.
It showed Eleanor standing beside four children.
Three were familiar.
Emma.
Lily.
Grace.
The fourth girl stood slightly apart from the others.
She looked about ten.
Her hair was long and black, and she wore a blue sweater.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
The four Mitchell girls. Taken before the separation.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Where did this come from?””
He stared at it.
“Claire.””
“When?””
“Before she disappeared.””
I studied the photograph.
“Who is the fourth girl?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Her name is Sophia.””
“Where is she?””
He didn't answer.
I stood.
“Daniel.””
He finally looked at me.
“Sophia was born two years before Lily.””
I frowned.
“That would make her seven.””
“No. She's ten.””
I stared at him.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“Because Sophia isn't your biological daughter.””
I looked toward the photograph again.
“Then whose child is she?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your father's.””
The room went silent.
I felt something cold spread through my chest.
“My father had another daughter?””
Daniel nodded.
“With Claire?””
“No.””
He looked toward Melissa.
“With Eleanor.””
I stared at him.
My mother had another child?
A daughter who had somehow become part of this nightmare?
Daniel continued.
“Eleanor gave birth to Sophia before she married your father. The family hid the pregnancy because she was already engaged to Thomas's business partner.””
I rubbed my face.
“So Sophia is my half-sister?””
“Yes.””
“And why is she in a photograph with my daughters?””
“Because Thomas considered her part of his inheritance plan.””
I shook my head.
“This is insane.””
Melissa stood.
“Ryan, there's something else.””
I turned.
She was holding a small envelope.
“I found this in Eleanor's coat when she visited last month.””
“Why didn't you show me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I took it from her.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The writing was neat and familiar.
My father's handwriting.
Eleanor,
If the girls are ever reunited, make sure Sophia is not allowed to speak to Ryan.
She knows what happened the night Claire disappeared.
I read it again.
Then a third time.
“What happened that night?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Your father arranged for Claire to be transferred to a private facility. But before the transfer, someone helped her escape.””
“Who?””
“Sophia.””
I stared at the photograph.
“The ten-year-old?””
Daniel nodded.
“She was only two years old when it happened. But she was there.””
“That makes no sense.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Melissa suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Ryan, listen. Your mother isn't going to stop. She'll come back with the police, and she'll claim you're keeping the children against their will.””
I looked at her.
“Then we'll tell them the truth.””
“What truth?””
I gestured toward the hidden passage.
“That we found two starving children locked inside our bedroom wall.””
Melissa lowered her eyes.
“I know.””
“And that you helped hide them.””
She began crying again.
“I know.””
I stepped away.
“I don't know how to look at you anymore.””
For a moment, she didn't speak.
Then Emma approached me.
“Daddy?””
I knelt.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Is Mommy going away?””
I looked at Melissa.
She was watching Emma with an expression I couldn't understand.
I gently brushed Emma's hair away from her face.
“I don't know yet.””
Emma's lip trembled.
“Did Mommy do something bad?””
I couldn't lie to her.
“Yes, sweetheart. She made some very bad choices.””
Emma looked toward Melissa.
Then she asked a question that nearly broke me.
“Does that mean she doesn't love us?””
Melissa collapsed onto her knees.
“Oh, Emma. No. No, baby.””
She reached for her.
Emma hesitated.
Then she stepped forward and allowed Melissa to hug her.
I turned away.
I needed air.
I walked into the bathroom and locked the door.
For the first time since discovering Lily, I allowed myself to cry.
Not loudly.
Just enough to feel the pressure leaving my chest.
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
*Mr. Mitchell, this is Dr. Samuel Reed.
I was Claire's physician at St. Mary's eleven years ago. We need to speak immediately.*
A second message followed.
Your mother has just requested the transfer of a patient named Sophia Mitchell. If you want to know what happened to Claire, come to my office.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
Do not bring Eleanor.
I called the number.
A man answered immediately.
“Ryan?””
“Who are you?””
“I already told you. Samuel Reed.””
“What do you know about Claire?””
He sighed.
“More than I should.””
“Is she alive?””
A long pause.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where is she?””
“She's not here.””
“Then where?””
“Mr. Mitchell, there's something you need to understand. Claire wasn't the only patient your father arranged to have admitted under false identities.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who else?””
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Eleanor Mitchell was admitted to the same facility under a different name. She was supposed to remain there permanently.””
I stared at the phone.
“Then who is the woman standing outside my house?””
Dr. Reed lowered his voice.
“That's exactly what I'm trying to establish.””
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
Then I opened the bathroom door.
Daniel was waiting outside.
“Who called?”” he asked.
“Dr. Reed. He says my mother was admitted to the same facility as Claire.””
Daniel's face went pale.
“That's impossible.””
“Apparently, impossible is the family business.””
He looked down.
“Ryan, there is something I've been hiding from you.””
I laughed without humor.
“Of course there is.””
He reached into his coat and pulled out an old hospital identification card.
It belonged to a nurse named Sophia Mitchell.
The photograph showed a young woman with long black hair.
The same woman from the picture.
I stared at the card.
“Why do you have this?””
“Because Sophia isn't missing.””
“Where is she?””
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
“She works in this house.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“What?””
He nodded slowly.
“She's been here for three months.””
I looked toward the bedroom.
Melissa was standing in the doorway.
Her face was white.
“Ryan,” she whispered.
I turned.
“Who is Sophia?””
Melissa's lips trembled.
Then she pointed toward the hallway.
“She's Emma's nanny.””
I couldn't move.
Our nanny.
The quiet young woman who prepared Emma's lunches, read her bedtime stories, and sometimes stayed overnight when Melissa and I attended business events.
I remembered her.
Her name was Sophie.
And I suddenly understood why she always seemed so familiar.
I reached for my phone.
“Call her.””
Melissa shook her head.
“She's gone.””
“When?””
“This morning.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Melissa looked at Lily.
Then Grace.
Then Emma.
“Because she took something.””
“What?””
Melissa whispered:
“The original hospital records.””
Before I could respond, a notification appeared on my phone.
A security camera alert.
Someone had entered my office.
I opened the live feed.
A woman stood beside my desk.
She was wearing a blue sweater.
She turned toward the camera.
And smiled.
Then she held up a photograph.
It showed Claire.
Alive.
May you like
And standing beside her was my father.
The date on the photograph was yesterday.
