Chapter 9: The Brother Who Wanted Everything
I had never known how quickly a person could become someone else.
One moment, I was a father trying to understand the secrets surrounding his family.
The next, I was standing in my kitchen with a police detective telling me my four-year-old daughter had been taken by a man who had been declared dead fourteen years earlier.
I couldn't think.
I couldn't breathe.
All I could see was Lily's empty chair at the table and the little pink backpack she had left beside the door.
“Ryan,” Detective Harris said, “look at me.””
I forced myself to meet his eyes.
“We're going to find her. But you cannot go anywhere alone.””
“He wants me to come alone.””
“I know.””
“If I don't go, what happens to her?””
“We don't know what he intends to do.””
I slammed my fist against the counter.
“He's my brother! I know what he intends to do. He wants control.
He wants money. He wants everyone to be afraid of him.””
Detective Harris didn't argue.
He simply said, “Then help us find him.””
I took a breath and nodded.
The officers collected the note and began coordinating with other units. A patrol car was sent to Mrs. Collins's house. Another officer interviewed Vanessa, who sat on the couch with her hands pressed against her mouth.
I turned toward her.
“Did you tell Daniel where Lily was?””
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
“No.””
“Did you tell him where Emily is?””
“No.””
“Then how did he know where to find her?””
“I don't know.””
I wanted to believe her.
But I had believed her before.
Detective Harris approached with a small evidence bag.
“Mrs. Collins found this beside the back door.””
Inside was a silver bracelet.
I recognized it immediately.
Lily wore it every day. Vanessa had given it to her on her fourth birthday, with a tiny heart charm engraved with her initials.
I felt sick.
“Did Daniel leave it?””
“We don't know. It may have fallen off during the abduction.””
I stared at the bracelet.
Then I noticed something folded beneath it.
A small photograph.
It showed a wooden boathouse beside a lake.
On the back, someone had written an address.
Lake Candlewood.
The same place Margaret had mentioned.
The same place where Daniel had supposedly died.
I looked at Detective Harris.
“This is where he wants me to go.””
He studied the photograph.
“Then it's probably where he expects us to look.””
“Will you come with me?””
“We'll establish surveillance and coordinate with local officers. But I need you to understand that Daniel may be armed or may have accomplices.””
I nodded.
“Do whatever you need to do. Just bring my daughter home.””
Before leaving, I went to the hospital to see Emily.
She was sitting on the bed, drawing a picture with colored pencils. When I entered, she smiled.
“Daddy!””
I knelt beside her.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
She held up her drawing.
It showed three people standing beneath a yellow sun. Lily was wearing a pink dress. Emily stood beside her, holding my hand.
I swallowed.
“That's beautiful.””
“Lily said we could all live together when I came home.””
I sat beside her.
“Emily, I need you to listen carefully. Something has happened, and I may need to be away for a little while.””
Her smile faded.
“Are you leaving me?””
“No.””
“Is Lily leaving too?””
I hesitated.
Emily immediately noticed.
“What happened?””
I took her hand.
“Someone has taken Lily, and I'm going to help bring her home.””
Emily's face went pale.
“Uncle Daniel?””
I felt my heart tighten.
“You know about him?””
She nodded.
“He said he would take Lily one day.””
“When did he say that?””
“When he put me in the wall.””
I stared at her.
“Emily, tell me exactly what happened.””
She looked down at her drawing.
“Uncle Daniel said Lily was special. He said she was the key to everything.””
I felt a cold sensation spread through my body.
“Did he say why?””
Emily shook her head.
“He said when Lily was old enough, he would take her to meet someone.””
“Who?””
She whispered, “Grandma Margaret.””
I went completely still.
“Did he ever take you to meet her?””
“No. But he showed me pictures.””
“Pictures of Margaret?””
Emily nodded.
“He said she was the only person who could make everything right.””
I leaned back, trying to make sense of it.
Daniel had spent years hiding Emily, controlling Vanessa, and manipulating Richard. Now he had taken Lily.
And Margaret Bennett was somehow connected to his plan.
I kissed Emily's forehead.
“I'll come back as soon as I can.””
She clung to my hand.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
At the boathouse, the sky had turned gray.
Detective Harris had arranged for officers to search the surrounding area while an unmarked vehicle waited near the road. I was instructed to remain in contact with the team and avoid entering any building without police support.
The old structure stood near the water, its wooden boards darkened by rain. A rusted chain hung from the door.
I recognized the place immediately.
Daniel and I had spent summers here as children. Our father used to take us fishing, and Daniel always insisted he could catch more fish than I could.
He'd been competitive about everything.
Grades. Sports. Money.
Even love.
When we were teenagers, he'd once told me that being the second son was like living in someone else's shadow.
I had laughed at him.
I had never understood how deeply he resented me.
A police officer approached.
“We found tire tracks near the access road. They're recent.””
“Any sign of Lily?””
“Not yet.””
I looked at the boathouse.
“Can we search inside?””
Detective Harris nodded to the officers.
Two of them moved toward the door while another circled the building.
The chain had been cut.
Inside, the air smelled of wet wood and gasoline. Old fishing equipment hung from the walls. A narrow staircase led to a loft above the main room.
I stepped inside behind the officers.
Then I saw the red toolbox.
It sat on a workbench beneath a dusty window.
I approached it slowly.
The metal was scratched and rusted, but I recognized the faded initials painted on the lid.
T.R.
Thomas Ryan.
My father.
I lifted the lid.
Inside were old photographs, folded letters, and a small digital recorder wrapped in a plastic bag.
Beneath them lay a sealed envelope addressed to me.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Ryan,
If you are reading this, Daniel has returned, and I have failed to protect you from the truth.
I need you to know that Margaret was never your enemy. Neither was Claire. I was the one who kept you apart because I believed the truth would destroy our family.
I was wrong.
Daniel discovered your birth records when he was twenty. He believed Margaret's connection to our family gave him a claim to assets I had placed in trust. When I refused to help him, he threatened to expose everything.
I should have told you then.
Instead, I let fear make my decisions.
If Emily is alive, she must be protected from Daniel. He believes the family trust belongs to him, but it does not. The final beneficiary was chosen long before Emily was born.
I stopped reading.
The final beneficiary?
I turned the page.
The next paragraph had been underlined.
It is not Emily.
My breath caught.
I read the sentence again.
It is not Emily.
Then who was it?
Before I could continue, a sound came from the loft.
A soft, deliberate footstep.
I looked up.
“Lily?””
No answer.
I climbed two steps before Detective Harris caught my arm.
“Stay behind us.””
The officers moved first, sweeping the loft with their flashlights.
A small television sat on a wooden crate.
Its screen flickered to life.
Daniel appeared.
He was older than I remembered, with a narrow face and streaks of gray in his hair. But his eyes were unmistakable.
Cold.
Alert.
Amused.
“Hello, little brother.””
I stared at the screen.
“Where's Lily?””
Daniel smiled.
“Always straight to the point. You were like that even as a child.””
“Where is she?””
“Safe.””
“Put her on the phone.””
“Why? So you can hear her cry?””
I lunged toward the screen, but Detective Harris pulled me back.
Daniel chuckled.
“Still emotional. Father always said you had a good heart. He also said it made you easy to manipulate.””
I clenched my fists.
“What do you want?””
Daniel leaned closer to the camera.
“The toolbox.””
I looked down at the open box.
“You can have it.””
“No. I want what's inside.””
“It's old letters and photographs.””
“And the recording.””
I stared at the screen.
“How do you know about the recording?””
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“Because I put it there.””
A chill ran through me.
“You hid it?””
“I wanted you to find it eventually. I just didn't expect you to be so slow.””
“Why take Lily?””
“Because you finally have something I need.””
“What?””
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“The truth.””
He paused.
“Have you read Father's letter?””
I said nothing.
“Then you've seen the part about the beneficiary.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Who is it?””
Daniel smiled again.
“That's what you're going to find out.””
He leaned back.
“You see, Ryan, Father didn't trust either of us with the estate. He created a separate arrangement that would only become active when the truth about our family was revealed.””
I looked at the letter.
“The beneficiary isn't Emily.””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Lily.””
The room went silent.
I felt as if someone had struck me in the chest.
“My daughter?””
“Your daughter is the only child in the family who was born without any connection to the original scandal. Father believed she could inherit without being controlled by the past.””
I stared at the screen.
“Then why did you take her?””
“Because the trust requires her to be placed under the care of a designated guardian if you are found unfit.””
My blood ran cold.
“What guardian?””
Daniel smiled.
“Me.””
I felt Detective Harris stiffen beside me.
Daniel continued.
“Father anticipated that one of us might become unstable. He wrote a provision allowing a temporary guardian to take control if the other parent was implicated in criminal activity or serious misconduct.””
I shook my head.
“You're lying.””
“Am I?””
He held up a document.
“Your wife has already admitted that she concealed a child, falsified records, and helped cover up an accident. Richard has financial records showing that you benefited from the trust for years without knowing it.””
“I didn't know anything!””
“That's what you'll tell the court.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“But the documents won't care what you knew.””
My hands trembled.
He had engineered the entire situation.
He had hidden Emily, manipulated Vanessa, controlled Richard, and waited until I discovered the truth.
Now he intended to use the fallout to claim Lily.
“You're not taking my daughter.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You should have thought of that before opening the wall.””
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Detective Harris turned to his officers.
“Lock down the property. We need to identify the source of that transmission and get an immediate location search underway.””
I looked down at the toolbox.
The recorder sat inside, wrapped in plastic.
I picked it up.
“Can we listen to this?””
Detective Harris nodded.
An officer connected it to a portable device.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's voice emerged.
Claire.
“If you're hearing this, Daniel has already begun his plan.””
I stopped breathing.
Her voice trembled, but she continued.
“Ryan, I need you to understand something. Lily isn't the only child in danger. Daniel has been searching for the original beneficiary for years.””
A pause.
Then Claire whispered a name.
“Eleanor.””
My mother's name.
I stared at the recorder.
Claire continued.
“Your mother knew who the beneficiary was. She tried to change the trust before she died, but Daniel found out.””
A sound came through the recording.
A door opening.
Then a man's voice.
Daniel.
“Claire, stop.””
The recording crackled.
Claire spoke faster.
“If Daniel finds out that Eleanor left you the original documents, he'll—”
A sharp crash interrupted her.
Then the recording ended.
I stood frozen.
My mother had known the truth.
She had left documents that could expose Daniel's plan.
And somewhere, my daughter was being held by the man who had spent fourteen years pretending to be dead.
Detective Harris looked at me.
“We need to find Eleanor's documents.””
I stared at the dark screen.
Then I remembered the last message my mother had left me before she died.
It had been a voicemail, recorded two days before she suffered a stroke.
She had sounded tired but calm.
“Ryan, sweetheart, there's something I need to tell you. It's about the red box in the attic. Don't let anyone else open it. Not even Daniel.””
I had never understood what she meant.
Now I knew.
The red toolbox wasn't the only box my mother had hidden.
And if Daniel had taken Lily because he believed she could lead him to the trust, then he might not stop until he found the documents Eleanor had spent years protecting.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A child's voice whispered through the speaker.
“Daddy?””
I nearly collapsed.
“Lily!””
“Daddy, I'm scared.””
“Where are you, sweetheart?””
“I don't know. It's dark.””
I could hear her crying.
“Is Uncle Daniel there?””
“No.””
“Can you see anything?””
She sniffled.
“There's a window. And a red door.””
I looked at Detective Harris.
He immediately signaled for an officer to trace the call.
“Lily, listen to me. I need you to stay quiet and tell me what you hear.””
She whispered, “Someone is coming.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
The line crackled.
Then Lily said something that made the entire room freeze.
“Daddy, the man coming through the door looks just like you.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Because Daniel wasn't the only person who had been hiding from the past.
Someone else had returned.
May you like
Someone who looked exactly like me.
And whoever that man was, he was standing beside my daughter.
