Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Wheel
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
I sat beside the road with my phone pressed against my ear, watching cars pass as if the world hadn't just collapsed around me.
Vanessa had been driving the car.
The same woman who had held me while I mourned Claire. The same woman who had promised to love me forever. The same woman who had tucked Lily into bed every night while another little girl starved behind the wall.
“Margaret,” I finally whispered, “are you telling me my wife killed Claire?””
“I don't know if Claire is dead.””
“But you just said—”
“I said Vanessa was driving. I didn't say I saw Claire die.””
I gripped the steering wheel.
“Then tell me exactly what you know.””
Margaret took a shaky breath.
“Claire called me the night before she disappeared. She was terrified. She said Vanessa had discovered the truth about your relationship and had threatened to expose it.””
“The truth about our family?””
“Yes. Claire had finally learned that you were her half-brother. She'd found a letter from your father explaining everything.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“She wanted to. But she was afraid you'd hate her.””
I remembered the last time Claire had looked at me.
We'd been standing outside a coffee shop. She'd held my hands and cried while telling me she couldn't see me anymore.
I'd asked whether there was another man.
She'd shaken her head.
I'd asked whether she was sick.
She'd said no.
Finally, I'd accused her of being a coward.
She had slapped me.
Then she'd whispered, “One day, you'll understand why I had to leave.””
I had never understood.
Until now.
“Where did Vanessa take her?”” I asked.
Margaret's voice trembled.
“Claire told me they were going to meet someone who could help her leave the state. Vanessa offered to drive her because Claire didn't trust Daniel.””
“Who was the person they were meeting?””
“I don't know. Claire wouldn't tell me over the phone.””
I stared at the road.
“And the accident?””
“Hours later, Vanessa called me. She said Claire had been injured in a crash. She told me not to contact the police because Daniel had already taken care of everything.””
“Taken care of what?””
“I don't know. She said Claire was being treated at a private facility and that I would be contacted when it was safe.””
I felt sick.
“You believed her?””
“I was frightened. Daniel had been threatening me for months. He told me that if I spoke to anyone, he'd make sure my family lost everything.””
I swallowed.
“Did you ever see Claire again?””
“No.””
“Did you try?””
“Of course I did!””
Margaret's voice broke.
“I went to the hospital Vanessa named. There was no record of Claire. I called every hospital in the area.
I contacted the police. Then Richard Hale appeared at my door and showed me photographs of Emily.””
My grip tightened.
“What photographs?””
“Emily as a newborn. Emily sleeping in a crib. Emily being carried into a house I didn't recognize. He told me that if I kept looking for Claire, the baby would disappear too.””
I stared straight ahead.
“So you stopped.””
“I was a coward.””
“No,” I said, though I wasn't sure I believed it.
“You were afraid.””
“I was afraid for five years.””
Her words hung between us.
Then she added, “But I kept the recording.””
I looked at the clock.
“Where are you?””
“I can't tell you that over the phone.””
“Margaret, I need to see you.””
“I know.””
“Today.””
She hesitated.
“There's something else you should know. The red toolbox isn't where you think it is.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“Your father moved it shortly before he died. He told me that if Daniel ever returned, I should never let him find it.””
“Where is it?””
Margaret lowered her voice.
“Under the old boathouse at Lake Candlewood.””
The same place Daniel had supposedly died.
I felt a cold shiver travel down my back.
“Why there?””
“Because your father believed the lake was the one place Daniel would never return to.””
I almost laughed.
My brother had returned from the dead, and the key to everything was hidden beneath the place where the world had buried him.
“Send me the address,” I said.
“I will. But Ryan, please promise me something.””
“What?””
“If you find the recording, listen to it before you confront Vanessa.””
I looked at the hospital in the distance.
“I can't promise that.””
“Then promise you'll keep Emily safe.””
I thought of the tiny girl clutching a sandwich crust beneath her pillow.
“I promise.””
When I ended the call, I immediately contacted Detective Harris.
I told him about Margaret's statement, the possible connection to the accident, and the red toolbox.
He instructed me not to go to the boathouse alone. He would arrange for officers to accompany me after they finished interviewing Vanessa.
I agreed.
Then I drove back to the hospital.
Emily was sitting in a chair beside the window when I entered her room. A nurse had braided her hair, and the stuffed bear rested in her lap.
She looked up immediately.
“Daddy!””
I knelt as she hurried toward me.
“I came back.””
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
“I knew you would.””
I held her tightly, breathing in the clean scent of shampoo and hospital soap.
For the first time since discovering her, I felt something other than fear.
I felt a responsibility so deep it almost hurt.
This little girl had lost her mother, her home, and the right to live without fear. Whatever the adults had done, she had paid the price.
I wasn't going to let that continue.
“Emily,” I said gently, “I need to ask you something about the night you left the house.””
She stiffened.
“Am I in trouble?””
“No, sweetheart. Never.””
She relaxed slightly.
“Do you remember when Claire last spoke to you?””
Emily looked down at her bear.
“She sang to me.””
My throat tightened.
“What song?””
“The one about the moon.””
Claire used to sing that song to me when we were young. She'd made up the words, changing the melody whenever she forgot a line.
I had forgotten about it until that moment.
Emily continued.
“She told me to be brave. She said she had to go somewhere for a little while, but she'd come back.””
“Did she say where she was going?””
Emily shook her head.
“Mommy said she wasn't coming back.””
“Vanessa?””
Emily nodded.
“She said my real mommy had gone away because she didn't love me anymore.””
I closed my eyes briefly.
“That's not true.””
“How do you know?””
“Because your mother loved you enough to try to protect you.””
Emily looked at me.
“Then why didn't she come back?””
I had no answer.
Before I could speak, the door opened.
Detective Harris entered, holding a folder.
“Ryan, I need to talk to you.””
I stood.
“What's happened?””
He glanced at Emily.
“Could we speak outside?””
I kissed Emily's forehead and followed him into the corridor.
Detective Harris opened the folder.
“We've completed a preliminary search of your house. We found a second concealed compartment behind the linen closet.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What was inside?””
“Documents, photographs, and a small digital recorder.””
I stared at him.
“Claire's recording?””
“We don't know yet. The recorder is damaged, but our technicians are working on it.””
He handed me a photograph.
It showed a narrow compartment containing a folded blanket, an old photograph, and several handwritten pages.
I recognized Claire's handwriting immediately.
“What do the pages say?””
“Most of them appear to be letters. Some are addressed to you.””
I reached for the photograph.
Detective Harris held it for another moment.
“There's something else. One of the letters suggests that Vanessa knew about your biological relationship to Claire before you did.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
He looked surprised.
“You do?””
“Margaret told me.””
Detective Harris nodded slowly.
“Then you should know that Vanessa has changed her statement.””
My pulse quickened.
“What did she say?””
“She admits that she was driving the car the night Claire disappeared.””
I stared at him.
“Did she admit what happened?””
“Not yet.””
He closed the folder.
“She also says Richard Hale arranged for the vehicle to be removed from the scene before investigators arrived.””
“Why would the police accept that?””
“They may not have known. We're still investigating.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Where is Vanessa now?””
“She has been asked to remain available for questioning. She isn't under arrest at this time.””
I felt anger rise.
“She hid a child in my house.””
“We're documenting everything, Ryan.””
“And if she tries to leave?””
“We'll act if we have grounds to detain her.””
He paused.
“There's one more issue. Vanessa claims that Claire was alive after the accident.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“She says she saw Claire at a private medical facility several days later.””
I stared at him.
“Where?””
“She refuses to tell us until she has legal representation.””
I felt the floor shift beneath my feet.
“Then she knows where Claire is.””
“Possibly.””
I looked through the window into Emily's room.
My daughter was arranging her stuffed animals in a line, making each one take turns sitting beside the bear.
She had no idea that somewhere in the world, her mother might still be alive.
And for six years, I had been mourning a woman who might have been waiting for someone to find her.
“Detective,” I said, “I want to hear the recording as soon as it's ready.””
“We'll contact you.””
He turned to leave.
Then he stopped.
“One last thing. We found a photograph in the second compartment. It appears to show Claire standing beside someone outside a medical facility.””
He handed me another picture.
Claire looked pale and exhausted, but unmistakably alive.
Standing beside her was a man wearing a dark coat.
I recognized him immediately.
Daniel.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.
Three months after Claire's supposed death.
I stared at the image.
Then I looked at Detective Harris.
“My brother was there.””
“Yes.””
“And he knew she was alive.””
“Yes.””
My voice dropped.
“Then why did he let me believe she was dead?””
Detective Harris looked at the photograph again.
“That's what we're trying to find out.””
My phone vibrated.
An incoming message from Vanessa.
*I know where Claire is. But if I tell you, Daniel will kill her.*
A second message appeared before I could respond.
*And Ryan, there's something you don't know about Lily.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then a third message arrived.
*She's the reason Claire never came home.*
