Chapter 8: The Secret About Lily
I read Vanessa's message until the words became a blur.
She's the reason Claire never came home.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Lily was four years old. She loved strawberry pancakes, bedtime stories, and the stuffed rabbit she carried everywhere. She still believed monsters lived under her bed, and every night she asked me to check the closet before turning off the light.
She was a child.
My child.
Whatever Vanessa meant, I refused to let anyone use Lily as a weapon.
I called my wife.
She answered immediately.
“Ryan?””
“What does Lily have to do with Claire?””
Vanessa was breathing hard.
“I can't explain it over the phone.””
“Then tell me where you are.””
“At home.””
“Stay there. I'm coming.””
“Ryan, wait.””
“No. You have spent six years deciding what I was allowed to know. That's over.””
I ended the call.
Before leaving the hospital, I told the nurse that Emily should remain under supervision and that no one except authorized staff or the assigned social worker should have access to her.
I also called Detective Harris and explained Vanessa's message.
He told me not to confront her alone.
I agreed to meet him at my house.
When I arrived, a police cruiser was parked at the curb. Vanessa sat at the kitchen table with her attorney, a woman in a navy suit who had a leather notebook open in front of her.
Lily was not there.
I stopped in the doorway.
“Where's my daughter?””
Vanessa looked up.
“She's with Mrs. Collins.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn't want her hearing this conversation.””
I stared at my wife.
“For once, that was the right decision.””
Her attorney introduced herself and explained that Vanessa had agreed to speak voluntarily, provided the conversation was documented.
I sat across from my wife.
“Tell me what Lily has to do with Claire.””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“Do you remember the night Lily was born?””
“Of course.””
“You were in the delivery room. You cut the cord. You held her before I did.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
Vanessa folded her hands.
“Claire was at the same hospital.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
“She was being treated in a private wing. Daniel arranged it. She had survived the accident, but she was badly injured.””
I stared at her.
“You told me she was dead.””
“I know.””
“You let me mourn her.””
“I know!””
Her voice cracked.
I leaned forward.
“Why was she at the same hospital where Lily was born?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“Because she had complications after the accident. She was unconscious for several days. When she woke up, she asked for you.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“And what did you tell her?””
“That you had moved on.””
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
“You told her I had a daughter.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She asked to see you. I told her you were happy with me and that you didn't want to know anything about her.””
I stared at her.
“You made that decision for me?””
“I thought I was protecting my marriage.””
“By destroying another woman's life?””
She covered her face.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Losing you.””
I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped across the floor.
“You didn't lose me, Vanessa. You stole years of my life by keeping the truth from me.””
Her attorney spoke quietly.
“Ryan, please sit down. We need to let her finish.””
I looked at the attorney, then sat.
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Claire was discharged from the medical facility three weeks after Lily was born. Daniel arranged for her to be moved to another location. He told her that if she contacted you, he would expose your relationship and make sure you lost everything.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Why would Claire believe him?””
“Because she had learned the truth about your birth. She knew you were her half-brother.””
The room fell silent.
Vanessa continued.
“She told Daniel she wanted to leave. She wanted to take Emily and disappear somewhere no one could find her. But Daniel told her he had another way to keep you both safe.””
“What way?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“He wanted Claire to surrender Emily to him.””
I felt cold.
“And when she refused?””
“He threatened to reveal your relationship to the world. He said he would tell everyone that Claire had deliberately pursued you, that she had deceived you, and that she had used the pregnancy to gain access to your father's trust.””
I shook my head.
“She would never have done that.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn't you help her?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“Because I had just given birth to Lily, and Daniel told me he could take her away from me.””
I stared at her.
“Take Lily?””
“He said he had evidence that could make the authorities question whether I was fit to be a mother. He told me that if I helped Claire escape, he would make sure Lily was placed in foster care.””
I thought of the messages, the payments, and the hidden compartments.
Daniel had used fear to control everyone around him.
But Vanessa had still made her choices.
“You could have told me,” I said.
She nodded through her tears.
“I know.””
“You could have trusted me.””
“I know.””
“You could have called the police.””
“I was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that as if fear excuses everything.””
She looked down.
“It doesn't.””
For the first time, she didn't try to defend herself.
She simply sat there, crying quietly.
I took a breath.
“Now tell me what you meant about Lily.””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“Claire wanted to see Lily.””
I stared at her.
“When?””
“The day Lily was born.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“She asked to hold her. She said she wanted to see the child you had with me.””
I looked away.
“What happened?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I brought Lily to the medical facility.””
I couldn't speak.
“You took our newborn daughter to see Claire?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Claire begged me. She said she needed to know that Lily was safe. She said she wanted to see you one last time.””
I gripped the table.
“Did I know?””
“No.””
“Of course I didn't.””
Vanessa began to cry harder.
“I carried Lily into the room. Claire was sitting beside the bed. She was so thin, Ryan. She could barely lift her arms.””
I imagined Claire lying in a hospital bed, injured and alone, while Vanessa stood beside her holding my newborn daughter.
“What did Claire say?””
“She asked whether you loved Lily.””
I swallowed.
“What did you tell her?””
“That you loved her more than anything.””
Vanessa looked up.
“Claire smiled. Then she said something I'll never forget.””
“What?””
“She said, 'Then promise me he'll never let anyone make her feel unwanted.''”
My eyes burned.
Vanessa continued.
“She held Lily for a few minutes. She kissed her forehead. Then she gave her back to me and asked me to promise that I'd never tell you what had happened.””
I stared at her.
“Why would she ask that?””
“Because she believed the truth would destroy you.””
I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.
“The truth didn't destroy me. Your lies did.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
I stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, the neighborhood looked exactly as it always had. Children rode bicycles along the sidewalk. A delivery truck stopped at the house across the street. Someone was watering flowers.
Our life had appeared ordinary because I had never been allowed to see what was happening beneath it.
“Where is Claire now?”” I asked.
Vanessa took a long breath.
“I don't know her current location.””
I turned.
“You said you knew.””
“I know where she was taken after leaving the medical facility. I don't know if she's still there.””
“Where?””
“A private rehabilitation center in upstate New York. Daniel arranged for her to be transferred under another name.””
“Why would she stay there for six years?””
“She might not have.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did you tell me she was alive?””
“Because I received a letter from her two months ago.””
My pulse quickened.
“What did it say?””
Vanessa reached into her bag and removed a folded envelope.
She slid it across the table.
My name was written on the front.
Ryan.
The handwriting was Claire's.
I opened the envelope with trembling fingers.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Ryan,
If this letter reaches you, then the truth has finally begun to surface. I know you may hate me for leaving, but I need you to understand that I never stopped loving you.
I also know what we learned about our family. I know what it means. I have spent years trying to forgive myself for not telling you sooner.
Emily deserves to know who her father is. She deserves to grow up without fear.
If Vanessa has kept her safe, then perhaps she has done one good thing in all this.
But do not trust Daniel.
He believes the past belongs to him. He believes every person in our family is a piece on a board he can move whenever he wants.
He is wrong.
Find the red toolbox. Find the recording. And whatever you do, do not let him near Lily.
Claire.
I read the letter twice.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“When did you receive this?””
“Two months ago.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I couldn't.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because Daniel was watching the house.””
I stared at her.
“Then why keep the letter?””
“Because I thought one day you might find out.””
I folded it carefully and placed it in my pocket.
“Who delivered it?””
“A woman. She left it in the mailbox.””
“Did you see her?””
“No.””
I looked toward the hallway.
“Where's the rest of the evidence?””
Vanessa's face changed.
“What do you mean?””
“The recording. The red toolbox. The letters you mentioned.””
She shook her head.
“I don't have them.””
“Then who does?””
She looked toward the staircase.
I followed her gaze.
A soft sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
I turned toward the hall.
“Who's here?””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“No.””
The front door opened.
Detective Harris entered, followed by another officer.
“Ryan, we need you to come with us.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Your neighbor called. Lily has disappeared.””
The room went silent.
I felt the words strike me with such force that I couldn't breathe.
“What?””
“Mrs. Collins said she stepped into the kitchen for less than a minute. When she returned, Lily was gone. The back door was open.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She had gone completely white.
“No,” she whispered.
I grabbed my phone and called Mrs. Collins.
She answered through tears.
“Ryan, I'm so sorry. I only turned away for a second.””
“Did you see anyone?””
“No. But Lily's rabbit is on the porch, and there's a note.””
My hand shook.
“What does it say?””
Mrs. Collins began crying harder.
“It's addressed to you.””
I heard paper rustling.
Then she read the words aloud.
You wanted the truth, little brother.
Now come find out what it costs.
I stared at the phone.
May you like
Daniel had taken Lily.
And he wanted me to come alone.
