Chapter 9: The Truth Ethan Buried
Claire did not speak for almost a full minute.
The phone remained pressed against her ear.
Her mother’s words echoed louder than anything else.
The man you married is the reason you lost your memory.
Ethan stood across the room.
His face was unreadable.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Just tired.
Like he had known this moment would eventually come.
“Mom,” Claire whispered.
Her voice shook.
“Tell me the truth.””
A long silence followed.
Then her mother answered.
“I’m sorry.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“No.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“Don’t say sorry. Not again. Everyone keeps saying sorry after they destroy my life.””
Ethan took a step forward.
“Claire—”
She raised her hand.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
For the first time, he looked like a stranger.
Not the man who held her when she cried.
Not the man who built a crib with shaking hands before Lily was born.
A stranger wearing a familiar face.
“Mom,” Claire said, “what did Ethan do?””
Her mother’s breathing became unsteady.
“I don’t have much time.””
“What does that mean?””
“Dr. Vale found me.””
The room went cold.
Detective Harris immediately moved closer.
“Ma’am, where are you?””
But Claire’s mother ignored him.
“Claire, listen carefully. Ethan was involved from the beginning.””
Claire looked at Ethan.
His expression changed slightly.
A small reaction.
A crack.
“You knew Dr. Vale?””
Claire asked.
Ethan didn’t answer.
Her mother did.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed the last piece of trust Claire had been holding.
“No.””
Her voice became a whisper.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Ethan finally spoke.
“Claire, please let me explain.””
She turned toward him.
“Explain what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“That you lied for eight years?””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“Fix it?””
She laughed bitterly.
“You can’t fix stealing someone’s life.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
Her voice rose.
“Do you know what it feels like to wake up every day and wonder why you forgot your own childhood? Why certain places make you panic? Why you have memories that don’t belong?””
Ethan looked down.
“Yes.””
Claire froze.
“What?””
“I know.””
The answer made her angry.
“How?””
“Because I was there.””
The room went silent.
Claire stared.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan sat down slowly.
His shoulders collapsed.
Like he had finally run out of ways to hide.
“Eight years ago, before I met you, I worked for Dr. Vale.””
Claire felt sick.
“You worked for him?””
“Yes.””
“What were you?””
“His assistant.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“You were part of the research team.””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
Claire looked at him.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because I believed him.””
“And now?””
“Now I know he was wrong.””
Claire shook her head.
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
“You don’t get forgiveness because you changed your mind.””
“I know.””
His agreement almost made it worse.
Because there was no fight left in him.
No excuse.
Only regret.
“Tell me everything,” Claire said.
Ethan looked at her.
“After your father discovered what Dr. Vale was doing, he tried to expose him.””
Claire listened.
“He had evidence. Records. Names. Everything.””
“And you?””
“I helped Dr. Vale find him.””
Claire stopped breathing.
“You helped him?””
“Yes.””
The room blurred.
“You destroyed my family.””
“I know.””
“You made my father disappear.””
“I thought he ran.””
“And my mother?””
“I didn’t know she survived.””
Claire looked away.
The pain was too much.
“But why me?””
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because you found the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The files your father left behind.””
Claire frowned.
“What files?””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“The reason Dr. Vale wanted your memory erased.””
A silence followed.
Then Claire understood.
The bottle.
The medication.
The missing memories.
The lies.
It wasn’t random.
“Those files are inside my memory.””
Ethan nodded.
“You memorized everything.””
Claire felt a chill.
“You mean I knew information that could destroy him.””
“Yes.””
“So Dr. Vale tried to erase me.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped him.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
Claire stepped backward.
She wanted to hate him.
She needed to hate him.
But then she remembered something.
A hospital room.
Years ago.
A younger Ethan sitting beside her.
Holding her hand.
Crying.
Not because he had won.
Because he had lost.
“You met me after the procedure.””
“Yes.””
“You were supposed to watch me.””
Ethan looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
His voice broke.
“Because you looked at me like I was a stranger.””
Claire said nothing.
“I saw what they did to you. I saw what they took from you.””
His eyes lifted.
“And I couldn’t keep pretending you were just another assignment.””
The room became quiet.
“I fell in love with you.””
Claire shook her head.
“Love doesn’t erase what you did.””
“I know.””
“You married me while knowing the truth.””
“I know.””
“You had a child with me.””
His face broke.
“I know.””
Claire looked toward Lily’s room.
Their daughter.
The only innocent person in all of this.
Then her mother spoke again through the phone.
“Claire, you have to go.””
Claire looked down.
“Mom?””
“Dr. Vale is coming.””
Detective Harris immediately reached for his radio.
“Location?””
But before her mother could answer, another voice came through the phone.
A man.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Hello, Claire.””
Everyone froze.
Dr. Vale.
Claire felt her stomach drop.
“How?””
The man laughed softly.
“You always were difficult to control.””
Ethan moved toward the phone.
“Vale.””
“Ethan.””
The way he said his name was worse than anger.
It was disappointment.
“You failed your final task.””
Ethan’s face hardened.
“You hurt her.””
“I saved her.””
Claire gripped the phone.
“You erased my memories.””
“I removed your pain.””
“You stole my life.””
“No.””
Dr. Vale’s voice remained calm.
“I protected the world from what you remembered.””
Claire looked at Ethan.
“What did I remember?””
A pause.
Then Dr. Vale answered.
“The person who ordered your father’s death.””
Everyone went still.
Claire whispered:
“Who?””
The call ended.
At that exact moment, the apartment door opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Tired.
Holding his hands up.
Claire recognized him instantly.
Not from memory.
From the photograph.
Her father.
Alive.

And his first words were:
“Claire, I’m sorry I let you forget me.””
