Chapter 8: The Secret Behind the Accident
The police arrived within minutes.
But whoever had been outside was already gone.
Only a broken window remained.
And a message written on the glass.
Three words.
“ASK YOUR FATHER.””
Claire stared at it.
Her hands were shaking.
“My father?””
She looked at Ethan.
“You told me he died.””
Ethan didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Again.
Another lie.
Another piece of her life hidden from her.
“How many people are dead, Ethan?””
His face tightened.
“Claire…”
“How many people have you buried for me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You keep saying that.””
Her voice cracked.
“But who was protecting me from you?””
That hurt him.
She saw it.
Good.
He deserved to feel something.
The next morning, Detective Harris arrived with new information.
“The person outside matches someone connected to the old research program.””
Claire looked at him.
“Who?””
“A doctor.””
“Which doctor?””
He hesitated.
Then placed a photograph on the table.
Claire picked it up.
A man in his fifties.
Gray hair.
Calm smile.
She had never seen him.
But something inside her reacted.
A memory.
A flash.
A room.
Bright lights.
A voice.
“Claire, you need to relax.””
She dropped the photograph.
“I know him.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You remember?””
“No.””
She touched her forehead.
“But I feel like I do.””
Detective Harris watched carefully.
“His name is Dr. Adrian Vale.””
Claire closed her eyes.
The name felt familiar.
Like a song she almost remembered.
“What did he do?””
Detective Harris answered quietly.
“He was the lead researcher in the memory recovery project.””
Claire looked at the documents.
“The project that changed me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Because you volunteered.””
Claire looked at him.
“I did?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His voice softened.
“Because of your father.””
Claire froze.
“My father?””
Ethan nodded.
“You wanted to prove something.””
“What?””
“That your memories weren’t random.””
Claire frowned.
“My memories?””
“You believed someone had been manipulating you.””
The room went silent.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The forgotten hours.
The strange feelings.
The fear she couldn’t explain.
“You’re saying I knew?””
“Yes.””
“Before all this?””
“Yes.””
Claire sat down slowly.
“Then why don’t I remember?””
Ethan looked devastated.
“Because the accident wasn’t an accident.””
Her breathing stopped.
“What?””
“Someone tried to kill you.””
The words hung in the air.
Detective Harris looked at Ethan.
“You need to tell her everything.””
Ethan nodded.
Then he finally did.
“Eight years ago, your father discovered that Dr. Vale was using patients in illegal experiments.””
Claire stared.
“My father?””
“He tried to expose him.””
“What happened?””
“He disappeared.””
Claire felt numb.
“You told me he abandoned us.””
“I was wrong.””
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more.
“He wasn’t gone,” Ethan continued.
“He was hiding.””
“From who?””
“From Dr. Vale.””
Claire looked at the photo again.
The doctor’s calm smile suddenly felt horrifying.
“And my mother?””
Ethan hesitated.
“She helped him.””
Claire whispered:
“She was alive.””
“Yes.””
“But she died.””
Ethan looked down.
“She died protecting you.””
Claire closed her eyes.
A memory flashed.
Her mother crying.
Holding her face.
Saying something.
“You have to forget.””
Claire opened her eyes.
“I heard that before.””
Detective Harris leaned forward.
“What?””
“I remember.””
Everyone froze.
Claire pressed her fingers against her temple.
“A hospital room.””
Her voice shook.
“My mother was there.””
“What did she say?””
Claire struggled.
“She said…”
The memory came back slowly.
“She said, ‘If they ask, tell them you don’t remember.’”
Silence.
Then Ethan whispered:
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
“She wasn’t telling you to hide the truth.””
Her voice trembled.
“She was trying to keep me alive.””
A phone rang.
Everyone turned.
It was Claire’s phone.
Unknown number.
She answered.
No one spoke.
Then a familiar voice came through.
An old voice.
A voice she had spent seven years believing was gone.
“Claire?””
Her knees nearly gave out.
“Mom?””
A quiet sob came from the other end.
“Yes.””
Claire covered her mouth.
Her mother was alive.
But before Claire could say anything else, her mother whispered:
“You need to leave Ethan immediately.””
Claire looked at her husband.
“What?””
Her mother’s voice trembled.
“He wasn’t protecting you.””
The room went silent.
“He was protecting himself.””
Ethan stood.
“Claire, don’t listen—”
The call continued.

And her mother said the one sentence that destroyed everything Claire thought she knew.
“The man you married is the reason you lost your memory.””
