Chapter 2: The Woman in the Kitchen
By morning, Claire had convinced herself she had imagined the guilt on Ethan’s face.
That was the problem with loving someone for years.
Your heart always searched for another explanation.
Maybe he was scared.
Maybe he panicked.
Maybe he thought he was protecting Lily.
Maybe there was a reason.
There had to be a reason.
Because the alternative was too painful.
The hospital room door opened quietly.
Ethan stepped inside carrying a paper cup of coffee.
For a moment, he looked exactly like the man Claire knew.
Tired.
Worried.
Broken.
“Hey,” he whispered.
Claire looked away.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“I know you’re angry.””
“Angry?”” Claire repeated.
Her voice was sharper than she expected.
“You lied to the police.””
Ethan placed the coffee on the table.
“I didn’t lie.””
Claire stared at him.
“You said Vanessa wasn’t there.””
His silence answered for him.
“She was there, Ethan.””
“I didn’t know she would come.””
“But she did.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell them.””
Ethan ran a hand through his hair.
“I was trying to understand what happened.””
Claire laughed once.
A bitter, painful sound.
“You were trying to understand? While hiding something?””
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
“Not here.””
“No. Here is exactly where we talk.””
The machines beside her bed continued beeping.
Steady.
Cold.
Unforgiving.
Claire watched his face carefully.
“Why did Lily say you took a bottle?””
His expression hardened.
“She doesn’t understand what she saw.””
“She is four years old, Ethan. She knows when something is wrong.””
“She was scared.””
“She was watching you.””
That hit him.
His eyes dropped.
Claire felt a crack form inside her.
Because Ethan didn’t deny it.
He just looked away.
The memory of the afternoon returned.
Claire had been sitting at the kitchen table when Vanessa arrived.
She remembered how surprised she was.
Vanessa never visited without calling first.
“Ethan isn’t here,” Claire had said.
Vanessa smiled.
“I know.””
That should have bothered her.
But it didn’t.
Not then.
Vanessa walked into the kitchen like she had done it a hundred times.
“You look tired,” Vanessa said.
“I have a four-year-old.””
Vanessa glanced toward the living room where Lily was coloring.
“She’s lucky.””
Claire smiled faintly.
“Why?””
“To have a mother who would do anything for her.””
It sounded like a compliment.
Now it sounded strange.
Because Vanessa had said it like she was talking about someone who wouldn’t be around forever.
Claire closed her eyes.
“What happened after she gave me the milk?””
Ethan became still.
“You remember that?””
“Yes.””
“What exactly?””
“Everything.””
His face changed.
“What do you mean?””
“I remember Vanessa pouring it. I remember drinking it. I remember feeling dizzy.””
Ethan sat down slowly.
“Claire…”
“What?””
His voice lowered.
“She told me you had an accident.””
Claire stared at him.
“Who told you?””
“Vanessa.””
“When?””
“The moment I got home.””
Claire’s heartbeat quickened.
“You weren’t home?””
“No.””
“Then why did you tell the police you were?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
And that was when Claire understood.
He wasn’t hiding the bottle because he was protecting Vanessa.
He was hiding the bottle because he was hiding something else.
“What happened before you came home?”” Claire asked.
Ethan looked at her.
For the first time since she woke up, he looked afraid.
“I found Lily outside.””
Claire frowned.
“Outside?””
“She was standing near the garage.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“Ethan.””
His hands clenched.
“She was holding something.””
“What?””
“A small bottle.””
Claire felt the room become colder.
“What kind of bottle?””
“I didn’t know.””
“You took it.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ethan looked toward the window.
Because he couldn’t look at her.
“Because I knew the police would think I did it.””
Claire stared.
“You?””
“I’m your husband.””
“That’s exactly why they would ask questions.””
He didn’t respond.
Claire felt tears forming, but she refused to let them fall.
“What was in the bottle?””
Ethan whispered:
“I don’t know.””
A knock interrupted them.
A nurse entered holding a folder.
“Mrs. Carter, there’s someone here to see you.””
Claire looked toward the door.
“Who?””
The nurse hesitated.
Then she glanced at Ethan.
“Your husband’s business partner.””
Claire’s stomach dropped.
“Who?””
The nurse opened the door.
And Claire saw the woman standing outside.
Vanessa.
She was wearing a black coat.
Her expression was full of sadness.
Almost convincing.
Almost.
“Claire,” Vanessa whispered.
But before she could step inside, Claire noticed something.
Vanessa wasn’t looking at her.
She was looking at Ethan.
And the message in her eyes was clear.
She wasn’t asking if Claire was awake.
She was asking whether Claire remembered.
Then Vanessa reached into her purse.
And pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I think you should see this,” she said.
Claire stared at the paper.
May you like
Because written across the top was a name she never expected to see.
Her own.
