Chapter 9: The Brother My Father Buried

The man standing in my doorway looked nothing like me.

That was the first thing I noticed.

I expected some dramatic resemblance.

A familiar expression.

A similar smile.

Something that would make the truth easier to accept.

There was nothing.

He was older than me by a few years.

His hair was gray at the temples.

His face carried the kind of exhaustion that came from surviving things nobody should have experienced.

But his eyes...

His eyes looked familiar.

Not because I had seen them before.

Because I had spent my entire life seeing my own reflection.

And that was the part I hated most.

I stepped forward.

"Who are you?""

He looked at the folder on the table.

Then at me.

"My name is Gabriel Alvarez.""

The name meant nothing.

But the silence around it meant everything.

Adrian looked away.

Beatriz looked down.

And suddenly I realized everyone knew more than I did.

Again.

"You're my brother?""

Gabriel nodded.

"Half-brother.""

The words sounded impossible.

I looked at the birth certificate.

My father's name.

A woman's name I had never heard.

A child born eleven months before me.

My entire life had been built on a foundation of missing pieces.

"Why now?""

Gabriel's expression hardened.

"Because Victor is about to destroy everything your father built.""

I laughed quietly.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

I pointed around the room.

"My wife knew secrets.""

I looked at Adrian.

"My former partner knew secrets.""

I looked at the folder.

"Now my dead father has secrets.""

My voice cracked with anger.

"Does anyone in this room think I deserve the truth?""

Nobody answered.

Because they knew.

They didn't.

Gabriel walked closer.

"I didn't come here to ask for forgiveness.""

"Good.""

"I came because my father left something unfinished.""

I stared at him.

"My father left a lot unfinished.""

Gabriel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Old letters.

"He built a second company.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"A private holding company.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Where?""

"Hidden behind another name.""

I looked at Adrian.

"Did you know?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

The answer made my anger return.

"You knew about my brother too?""

"No.""

Adrian shook his head.

"Not until recently.""

Gabriel looked at him.

"You're lying.""

Adrian's face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

I stepped between them.

"What is going on?""

Gabriel looked at me.

"Your father created a system.""

"What system?""

"One company for public success.""

He tapped the papers.

"And one company for control.""

My stomach tightened.

"Control over what?""

"Everything.""

He placed a document in front of me.

"The properties. The investments. The offshore accounts.""

I scanned the pages.

The numbers were enormous.

Bigger than anything I had imagined.

My father hadn't built a company.

He had built a machine.

And I had unknowingly inherited the controls.

"Why hide this from me?""

Gabriel looked at me.

"Because your father didn't trust you.""

The words hurt more than I expected.

Not because they came from Gabriel.

Because they sounded familiar.

Like something my father would say.

I remembered being fifteen years old.

Standing in his office.

Showing him a business idea.

He looked at my plans.

Then tore the paper in half.

"You think you understand the world because you understand numbers.""

Those words stayed with me.

I thought they made me stronger.

Maybe they just made me desperate to prove myself.

"Why would he leave it to me?""

Gabriel answered:

"He didn't.""

Silence.

"What?""

"He left it to both of us.""

I stared.

"Then why have I never heard of you?""

Gabriel's expression became darker.

"Because your father made sure nobody did.""

The room went quiet.

"He erased me.""

The words carried pain.

"Changed records. Paid people. Created a new identity.""

My jaw tightened.

"Why?""

"Because my mother threatened to expose him.""

"For what?""

Gabriel looked at the papers.

"For what he did to both our families.""

My phone vibrated.

I looked.

Marcus.

Another message.

*Security is compromised. Victor has entered the building. The board is waiting.*

I showed the screen.

Gabriel looked at it.

"You need to go.""

I stared.

"You came all this way and now you're telling me to leave?""

"No.""

He handed me a small drive.

"I'm coming with you.""

I looked at the drive.

"What is this?""

"The evidence your father kept.""

I narrowed my eyes.

"Evidence against who?""

Gabriel's answer was immediate.

"Victor.""

The drive to my company felt longer than any journey I had ever taken.

Nobody spoke much.

Isabella sat beside me in the back seat.

I kept checking the mirror.

Not because I thought someone was following us.

Because I needed to see her.

To remind myself she was safe.

That she was with me.

Not alone.

Not afraid.

When we reached the building, the lobby was crowded.

Employees.

Security.

Board members.

Everyone watching.

Everyone waiting.

The moment I walked inside, conversations stopped.

Victor stood near the elevators.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

The same man who had smiled at me every morning.

The same man who had betrayed me.

"Daniel.""

I walked toward him.

"You look surprised.""

He smiled.

"Not at all.""

His eyes moved to Gabriel.

Then Isabella.

And for the first time, his confidence disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

He knew something had changed.

"You brought them.""

I stopped.

"Who?""

"Your problems.""

I smiled coldly.

"No.""

I looked around the room.

"I brought the truth.""

The board meeting room was already prepared.

Documents.

Screens.

Everyone seated.

The chairman looked uncomfortable.

"Daniel, this meeting concerns serious allegations.""

"I know.""

Victor sat down.

"Then you understand why we had to act.""

I looked at him.

"You forged documents.""

His expression didn't change.

"That's a serious accusation.""

"Yes.""

I placed the original contract on the table.

"Which is why I brought proof.""

The room changed instantly.

People leaned forward.

Victor's face remained calm.

But his hands moved slightly.

A tiny reaction.

Fear.

The chairman picked up the papers.

"What is this?""

"The original ownership agreement.""

The room became silent.

Victor looked at me.

"You don't know what you're holding.""

I smiled.

"I know exactly what I'm holding.""

Gabriel connected the drive to the screen.

Documents appeared.

Bank transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Private agreements.

The room erupted.

Victor stood.

"This is fabricated.""

Gabriel spoke for the first time.

"No.""

Everyone turned.

Victor froze.

"Who are you?""

Gabriel looked at him.

"The person who knows exactly how you helped my father hide money.""

Victor's face changed.

"You.""

A whisper.

Like he recognized him.

I noticed.

"You know him.""

Victor said nothing.

Gabriel continued.

"Victor Salazar didn't just betray Daniel.""

The room went silent.

"He betrayed my father.""

I looked at Victor.

"What did you do?""

For the first time, Victor looked trapped.

Then he laughed.

Not nervously.

Confidently.

"You still think this is about me.""

The lights suddenly went out.

Everyone shouted.

Emergency alarms started.

A few seconds later, the screens turned back on.

But the image wasn't the documents.

It was a video.

A video of me.

My voice.

My face.

Saying things I had never said.

The room gasped.

Victor smiled.

"You see?""

He looked at the board.

"This is what I warned you about.""

The fake video showed me admitting to illegal actions.

The same technology.

The same plan.

The same trap.

Victor looked directly at me.

"You built your empire on lies.""

He paused.

"Now everyone gets to see who you really are.""

I stared at the screen.

Then at Gabriel.

Then at Isabella.

Because suddenly I understood.

The evidence.

The contract.

The secrets.

They were never the final attack.

They were distractions.

Victor didn't need to steal my company anymore.

He needed the world to believe I was a criminal.

And then I saw something.

In the corner of the video.

A reflection.

A person standing behind the fake me.

Someone helping create the recording.

Someone I recognized.

My blood went cold.

Because it wasn't Victor.

It wasn't Adrian.

It wasn't Beatriz.

It was someone sitting in this room.

Someone who had been helping me fight the betrayal from the beginning.

Someone I had trusted completely.

I looked toward the person.

And whispered:

"Why?""

The room followed my eyes.

And the person slowly stood.

Then said:

"Because your father was right.""

A pause.

"You were never supposed to inherit the empire.""

May you like

The person smiled.

"You were supposed to destroy it.""
