Chapter 5: The Room Where Truth Was Hidden
The sound of broken glass echoed through the villa.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The kind of silence that followed wasn't peaceful.
It was the silence before something broke.
I held Isabella close behind me.
Her small hands gripped the back of my shirt.
I could feel her shaking.
Not the kind of shaking caused by cold.
The kind caused by memory.
The kind caused by knowing exactly what danger sounded like.
I looked at Beatriz.
She was staring toward the entrance hall.
Her face had lost all color.
"How did he get inside?"" I asked.
She didn't answer.
"Beatriz.""
Her lips parted.
Then closed again.
That was enough.
She knew.
Another sound came from downstairs.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone who wasn't afraid of being heard.
I moved Isabella toward the hallway.
"Go to the bedroom.""
She shook her head immediately.
"No.""
"Isabella.""
"I don't want to hide again.""
The words stopped me.
She wasn't refusing because she was stubborn.
She was refusing because she had spent too long hiding.
Behind furniture.
Behind doors.
Behind silence.
I knelt down.
"Listen to me.""
Her eyes met mine.
"I need you to be brave for one more minute.""
She swallowed.
"Are you going to leave?""
The question hit harder than anything else that night.
"No.""
I answered immediately.
"Never because of this.""
Her eyes filled.
I touched her cheek.
"Your job is not to protect me. Your job is to be a child.""
She nodded slowly.
But she didn't move.
Because before she could, a voice came from the bottom of the stairs.
"Still giving speeches, Daniel?""
I looked up.
Adrian Vale stood there.
Eight years had changed him.
The young man I remembered had disappeared.
The person standing in my home looked older.
Harder.
His expensive coat was soaked from the rain outside.
His hair was slightly messy.
But his eyes were exactly the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
Like he was always three steps ahead.
"Get out of my house.""
Adrian smiled.
"Your house?""
He looked around.
"Interesting choice of words.""
My fists tightened.
"You broke into my home.""
"No.""
He walked slowly into the room.
"I came to collect something that belongs to me.""
"Nothing here belongs to you.""
His smile faded.
"You really believe that.""
Beatriz stepped forward.
"Adrian, stop.""
He looked at her.
And the expression on his face changed.
Not affection.
Not respect.
Disappointment.
"You had one job.""
Beatriz froze.
My eyes moved between them.
One job.
The words confirmed something I already suspected.
She wasn't his partner.
She was his tool.
"What job?"" I asked.
Neither answered.
Adrian walked closer.
"Where is it, Daniel?""
"Where is what?""
"The missing contract pages.""
I felt Isabella's hand tighten around mine.
Adrian noticed.
Of course he noticed.
He noticed everything.
His eyes moved toward my daughter.
"There she is.""
I stepped between them.
"Don't look at her.""
A small smile appeared on his face.
"You know, that's what makes this so interesting.""
"What?""
"You.""
I frowned.
"Me?""
"You spent years believing you were protecting everyone around you.""
He glanced at Isabella.
"But the one person who actually understood what was happening was an eight-year-old girl.""
The sentence made my stomach turn.
"You used my daughter.""
Adrian's expression changed.
"No.""
His voice became colder.
"Your daughter found something she shouldn't have.""
I stared at him.
"She's a child.""
"Exactly.""
He stepped closer.
"And children are unpredictable.""
My anger rose.
"You were afraid of a child?""
His jaw tightened.
For the first time, I saw something real.
Fear.
Only for a second.
But it was there.
"What did she find?"" I asked.
Silence.
Then Adrian laughed softly.
"Ask your wife.""
I looked at Beatriz.
She looked down.
"Beatriz.""
Her voice was barely audible.
"The pages showed the original ownership agreement.""
I waited.
"And?""
She looked at Adrian.
Then back at me.
"Adrian never owned half the company.""
I stared.
"What?""
Adrian's face remained emotionless.
"The original agreement said his shares were temporary.""
My eyes moved toward him.
"You knew.""
"Of course I knew.""
"Then why?""
His expression hardened.
"Because I built that company with you.""
"You helped.""
"I sacrificed everything.""
"You betrayed me.""
"And you erased me.""
The anger in his voice finally surfaced.
"You became successful, Daniel. You became powerful. Everyone knew your name.""
He pointed at me.
"But nobody remembered mine.""
I shook my head.
"This is about your ego?""
His laugh was bitter.
"No.""
He looked around the villa.
"It's about what you took from me.""
"I took nothing.""
"That's what you always say.""
The room became tense.
Then Isabella spoke.
"He wanted Daddy to disappear.""
Everyone froze.
I looked at her.
"Isabella.""
But she kept going.
Her voice trembled.
"But Mommy said she didn't want that.""
My eyes moved toward Beatriz.
Adrian's face changed.
"What did she say?""
Isabella stepped closer to me.
"Mommy said she only wanted the papers.""
The room went silent.
I looked at Beatriz.
She looked horrified.
"Isabella...""
"No.""
My voice stopped her.
"Let her speak.""
My daughter wiped her tears.
"She said Adrian was angry. She said he wanted to hurt Daddy.""
Adrian stared at Beatriz.
"You told her?""
Beatriz shook her head quickly.
"No.""
"You told her enough.""
"I was trying to protect her.""
He laughed.
"Protect her?""
The word sounded ridiculous coming from him.
"You were the one who made her afraid.""
Beatriz looked at him.
"You threatened me.""
"And you listened.""
"I had no choice.""
"You always had a choice.""
Their argument revealed more than any confession could.
They weren't united.
They were collapsing.
I looked at Adrian.
"Where is the contract?""
He smiled.
"Still trying to solve everything.""
"Where is it?""
He took another step.
"Your daughter knows.""
I turned toward Isabella.
Her face changed.
Fear.
Again.
"Isabella?""
She looked at the floor.
"I moved it.""
"Where?""
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Grandma's room.""
My heart stopped.
"My mother's room?""
She nodded.
"My old house?""
"No.""
She looked at me.
"Here.""
I stared.
"My mother has been dead for five years.""
"I know.""
"Then why would it be in her room?""
Isabella swallowed.
"Because Grandma told me to hide things there.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"My mother?""
She nodded.
"Before she died.""
I couldn't speak.
My mother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who always told me to trust actions over words.
The woman who had loved Isabella more than anything.
"What did she tell you?""
Isabella looked toward Adrian.
Then Beatriz.
Then me.
"She said one day Daddy would need proof.""
My breath caught.
"Proof of what?""
She whispered:
"That someone was trying to steal his life.""
Nobody moved.
Even Adrian.
Because whatever he expected to find in this house...
It wasn't that.
I walked toward the old guest room where my mother's belongings were still kept.
Behind me, Adrian followed.
"Daniel.""
I turned.
"You really think a dead woman can save you?""
I stared at him.
"No.""
I opened the door.
"But I think she knew you better than I did.""
Inside the room, everything was untouched.
My mother's books.
Her old chair.
The small wooden jewelry box she always kept beside the window.
Isabella walked in quietly.
She went directly to the bookshelf.
Then pulled out an old family photo.
Behind it was a small envelope.
My hands went cold.
On the front, written in my mother's handwriting, were six words.
*For Daniel. When the truth comes.*
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
And one photograph.
The photograph was of Adrian.
But not the Adrian I knew.
It was Adrian standing beside someone else.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Someone who had no reason to be involved.
Someone who had been working for me for ten years.
My company's current chief financial officer.
And beneath the photograph was my mother's final warning:
*"Daniel, do not trust the person who tells you they are helping you.""*
I looked at the picture again.
Then at the name written on the back.
My entire empire had been built on the loyalty of this man.
May you like
And now I realized the person who had been destroying me from inside...
Was someone I had never suspected.
