Chapter 8: The Father I Never Knew
The sentence on my mother's note didn't make sense.
I read it once.
Then twice.
Then a third time.
*Your father was never the man you believed he was.*
My father had been dead for twelve years.
A heart attack.
That was the official story.
The story I had grown up with.
The story my mother had repeated every time I asked about him.
He was a businessman.
A strict man.
A difficult man.
But my father.
The man who taught me how to negotiate.
The man who taught me never to show weakness.
The man whose portrait still hung in my childhood home.
Now my mother's final warning suggested everything I knew about him was wrong.
I looked at Beatriz.
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
"You knew.""
The words came out quietly.
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Then why do you look afraid?""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Adrian stepped forward.
"Because she knows more than she told you.""
Beatriz looked at him.
"Stop.""
That one word carried years of fear.
I turned toward her.
"What does my father have to do with this?""
She looked away.
"Daniel...""
"No.""
My voice hardened.
"Not tonight.""
I held up the note.
"Not after my daughter spent months being afraid in her own home.""
Isabella stood beside me.
Silent.
Watching.
I lowered my voice.
"You are going to tell me everything.""
Beatriz closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"I never met your father.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"I only knew what Adrian told me.""
I looked at Adrian.
The room became still.
"Adrian?""
He didn't answer immediately.
And that hesitation told me enough.
I stepped toward him.
"What did my father have to do with this?""
Adrian looked older suddenly.
Not because of age.
Because of exhaustion.
"Your father wasn't just a businessman.""
I waited.
"He was one of the original investors behind your company.""
My eyebrows tightened.
"What?""
"You think you built everything from nothing.""
I stared at him.
"I did.""
"No.""
The word was quiet.
But certain.
"You built it on top of something that already existed.""
I felt anger rising.
"Explain.""
Adrian looked at the contract in my hand.
"The company you founded was created from assets your father controlled.""
I shook my head.
"That's impossible.""
"My mother would have told me.""
"Your mother tried.""
The sentence stopped me.
"What?""
Adrian looked at me.
"She spent years trying to separate you from his influence.""
I looked at the note.
"Why?""
His answer was simple.
"Because your father wasn't building a company.""
A pause.
"He was building control.""
The kitchen suddenly felt cold.
I thought about my childhood.
The rules.
The expectations.
The constant pressure to succeed.
I had always believed my father was preparing me.
Teaching me.
Making me stronger.
But what if he had been shaping me for something else?
"What happened to him?""
Adrian looked at Beatriz.
Then back at me.
"Your mother discovered what he had done.""
My chest tightened.
"Done what?""
"He had hidden money.""
I stared.
"From who?""
"From everyone.""
Adrian walked closer.
"He created accounts nobody knew about. Agreements nobody saw. Partnerships designed to benefit him even after he was gone.""
I looked down.
"The company.""
"Yes.""
"My company.""
Adrian nodded.
"Your father intended for everything to eventually return to his control.""
I laughed bitterly.
"My father died before that happened.""
Adrian didn't respond.
And suddenly I understood.
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
He looked away.
"Daniel.""
"What are you not telling me?""
The silence became unbearable.
Then Beatriz spoke.
"Your father's death wasn't as simple as you were told.""
Everything stopped.
I turned toward her.
"What did you say?""
She looked like she regretted speaking.
"Beatriz.""
Her voice shook.
"I don't know the full truth.""
"Then tell me what you know.""
She swallowed.
"Adrian told me your father had enemies.""
"Everyone has enemies.""
"No.""
Her eyes met mine.
"He had people who wanted him gone.""
I stared.
"And you believed him?""
"I didn't know what to believe.""
The answer made me angry.
"Then why were you involved?""
Her face collapsed.
"Because Adrian found me when I was vulnerable.""
The confession came quietly.
"When?""
"Two years after we married.""
I looked at her.
"You've been working with him for six years?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I wasn't trying to hurt you.""
"Then what were you doing?""
She looked at Isabella.
"I thought I was protecting my family.""
I almost couldn't speak.
"By helping the people destroying it?""
Her eyes filled.
"I thought Adrian was trying to expose something about your father.""
"And then?""
"He changed.""
"Changed how?""
"He stopped talking about truth.""
Her voice dropped.
"He started talking about taking everything.""
The room went silent.
I looked at Adrian.
"Did you know about my father's plans?""
He didn't answer.
"Adrian.""
Finally, he said:
"Yes.""
The honesty shocked me.
"You knew?""
"I discovered documents after leaving the company.""
"And you used them against me.""
"I tried to use them to force you to listen.""
I stared.
"You threatened my daughter.""
His face changed.
"I never wanted that.""
"But it happened.""
He looked down.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
I didn't care.
Regret didn't undo fear.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Marcus.
*Daniel, you need to come now. The board meeting has started.*
I looked at the time.
Forty minutes.
I grabbed the contract.
"We're leaving.""
Beatriz looked surprised.
"Daniel?""
"You're coming too.""
Her expression changed.
"Why?""
"Because everyone involved needs to answer for what happened.""
I looked at Adrian.
"And he is coming.""
Adrian nodded.
He knew there was no escape anymore.
But before we left, Isabella tugged on my sleeve.
"Daddy.""
I knelt.
"What is it?""
She looked worried.
"There's something else.""
My heart sank.
"What?""
She hesitated.
"I didn't tell you everything about Victor.""
I stayed quiet.
"What else?""
She looked at the floor.
"When he came to ask about the papers...""
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"He said he knew where Mommy kept the other secret.""
I frowned.
"Other secret?""
She nodded.
"He said the contract wasn't the only thing that could destroy you.""
My stomach tightened.
"What else did he know?""
She whispered:
"He said there was proof that you weren't your father's only son.""
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
"What?""
Isabella looked terrified.
"He said your father had another child.""
Nobody spoke.
Not even Adrian.
Because everyone understood what that meant.
If true...
My entire family history was a lie.
And someone had spent years hiding the truth.
I looked at Beatriz.
"Did you know?""
She didn't answer.
That was enough.
My voice became quiet.
"How long?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Since before we married.""
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
"You knew?""
"I was going to tell you.""
"When?""
She couldn't answer.
I nodded slowly.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
Another person deciding what truth I was allowed to have.
Then the front door opened.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Gray hair.
Holding a folder.
The security guard behind him was unconscious on the floor.
Everyone froze.
The stranger looked directly at me.
"Daniel.""
My body went cold.
Because I recognized the voice.
Not from memory.
Not from photographs.
From recordings.
From documents.
From a past I never knew existed.
He stepped inside.
"I think it's time you met your brother.""
He placed the folder on the table.
Inside was a birth certificate.
A name.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed my father.
Standing beside a woman who was not my mother.
And a baby.
A baby who had grown into the man standing in front of me.
My father's secret son looked at me and said:
"Your father didn't leave you an empire, Daniel.""
May you like
A pause.
"He left you a war.""
