Chapter 9: The Last Lie

The police arrived within twenty minutes.

Not because of the message alone.

Because Noah had received three more.

All from the same number.

All with the same warning.

*Stop digging.*

Daniel watched Detective Harris examine Noah’s phone.

“This isn’t Olivia’s number.””

Daniel looked toward his wife.

She sat silently on the couch.

For once, she wasn’t trying to explain.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t defending herself.

She was afraid.

“Do you know who sent these?”” Detective Harris asked.

Olivia didn’t answer.

“Mrs. Bennett.””

Her eyes lifted.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel almost laughed.

Because even now, he couldn’t tell if it was a lie.

Detective Harris studied her.

“You understand this makes you look worse.””

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel noticed something.

Olivia wasn’t fighting.

That was unusual.

Almost suspicious.

Then she looked at him.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t respond.

“I need to tell you something.””

He stared.

“Another story?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“The truth.””

Everyone became still.

Olivia took a breath.

“When Marcus died, I wasn’t alone.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Who was with you?””

She looked down.

“Someone who helped me.””

The detective leaned forward.

“Name.””

Olivia hesitated.

And that hesitation mattered.

“Victor Hale.””

Noah froze.

“My father’s brother?””

Olivia nodded.

Daniel frowned.

“Why would Marcus’s brother help you?””

Olivia looked ashamed.

“Because he hated Marcus.””

Noah stood.

“He hated his own brother?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Olivia looked at him.

“Because Marcus changed his will.””

The room went silent.

Daniel felt the pieces moving.

“What did Victor want?””

“The trust.””

Noah’s face went pale.

Olivia continued.

“Marcus cut Victor out after discovering he had been stealing from the family business.””

Detective Harris wrote something down.

“So Victor helped you steal the trust?””

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel stared at her.

“And you’re telling us this now?””

“Because he’s dangerous.””

The irony wasn’t lost on anyone.

The woman who caused so much damage was now warning them about someone else.

Daniel looked away.

“You expect us to believe you?””

“I don’t care if you believe me.””

For the first time, Olivia sounded honest.

“I just don’t want Noah hurt.””

Noah looked at her.

“Now you care?””

The question broke her.

She looked at her son.

And for a second, Daniel saw something real.

Pain.

“I always cared.””

Noah shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You cared when losing me became inconvenient.””

Olivia had no answer.

That night, Daniel stayed at a hotel with Ethan.

He didn’t trust himself to sleep in the house.

He didn’t trust the memories.

The next morning, Ethan sat beside him at breakfast.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Is Grandma going to be okay?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“She’s stronger than anyone I know.””

Ethan nodded.

Then he asked:

“Are you going to leave Mom?””

Daniel looked at his son.

“I don’t know.””

Ethan played with his spoon.

“Sometimes people do bad things because they’re scared.””

Daniel was surprised.

“Where did you hear that?””

“Grandma said it.””

He looked up.

“She said being scared explains things. It doesn’t excuse them.””

Daniel smiled.

That sounded like Margaret.

Later that day, Daniel returned home to collect some things.

The house was empty.

Or so he thought.

He walked into the office.

On the desk was a note.

No name.

Just three words.

*You were warned.*

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

Before he could call anyone, he heard a noise upstairs.

A door closing.

He moved slowly.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

He walked toward the hallway.

Then he saw it.

A man standing near the stairs.

Older.

Cold eyes.

Holding a folder.

Daniel recognized him from the photograph Noah showed him.

Victor Hale.

“What are you doing here?””

Victor smiled.

“You ask that like this is your house.””

Daniel stepped back.

“How did you get in?””

Victor ignored the question.

“You should have stayed out of family matters.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“Your family destroyed mine.””

Victor laughed.

“Destroyed?””

He lifted the folder.

“Do you really think Olivia is the only person who lied to you?””

Daniel froze.

“What does that mean?””

Victor opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Daniel’s mother.

Margaret.

Standing beside Marcus Hale.

Daniel stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Victor smiled.

“Is it?””

He placed the photo on the table.

“Your mother knew Marcus before he died.””

Daniel felt the world shift.

“No.””

Victor leaned closer.

“And she knew about Olivia long before she came into your life.””

Daniel stared at the picture.

Because one thought entered his mind.

The same thought that terrified him.

The same thought that had haunted him since the beginning.

What if Margaret wasn’t only protecting him?

What if she was hiding something too?

Then Victor whispered:

“Ask your mother why she really brought Olivia into your family.””

And Daniel realized the truth he feared most.

The story he had been chasing was never just about Olivia.

It was about the secret everyone had been protecting from him.
