Chapter 5: The Woman From Her Past

The woman standing in Olivia’s doorway looked nothing like the memory she carried.

Years had passed.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face had more lines.

But Olivia recognized her immediately.

“Rachel.””

The woman smiled sadly.

“Hello, Olivia.””

Daniel’s house suddenly felt like a courtroom.

Every person who knew the truth was appearing one by one.

Olivia stepped outside.

“What are you doing here?””

Rachel looked past her shoulder.

“Is Daniel home?””

“No.””

“Good.””

Olivia’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you want?””

Rachel reached into her purse.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“I think you know.””

Olivia stared at it.

She didn’t need to open it.

She knew what it was.

“No.””

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“Yes.””

“You promised.””

“I promised not to say anything unless I had to.””

Rachel looked toward the house.

“I have to now.””

Olivia grabbed her arm.

“Keep your voice down.””

Rachel pulled away.

“After what happened to Margaret, you’re worried about noise?””

Olivia went silent.

Rachel looked disappointed.

“I spent years convincing myself you weren’t capable of this.””

“You don’t know what happened.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

The words hit harder than Olivia expected.

Rachel opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

An old one.

A young Olivia standing beside a man.

A man Daniel had never heard of.

Olivia’s face drained.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the same place I got everything else.””

Rachel held up another paper.

“A copy of the original agreement.””

Olivia whispered:

“You kept those?””

“I kept them because I knew one day you would need to be stopped.””

Olivia laughed bitterly.

“Stopped?””

She stepped closer.

“You have no idea what I had to do to survive.””

Rachel stared at her.

“No. I know exactly what you did.””

The front door opened.

Both women froze.

Daniel stood there.

He had heard enough.

“How long?””

Olivia turned.

“Daniel.””

His expression was unreadable.

“How long have you known Rachel?””

Olivia opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel looked at the papers in Rachel’s hand.

“Who is the man in that picture?””

Silence.

Then Ethan appeared behind him.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked back.

“Go upstairs, buddy.””

Ethan didn’t move.

He looked at Olivia.

And she realized something.

The child wasn’t afraid of her anymore.

That scared her more than anything.

Rachel spoke quietly.

“Daniel, you deserve to know.””

Olivia shook her head.

“No.””

Rachel continued.

“Before Olivia married you, she was engaged.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

Olivia closed her eyes.

Rachel continued.

“She was engaged to a man named Marcus Hale.””

Daniel looked at Olivia.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Olivia’s voice cracked.

“Because it was over.””

Rachel shook her head.

“No, it wasn’t.””

Olivia looked at her.

“Stop.””

“Marcus didn’t disappear.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you saying?””

Rachel looked directly at him.

“I’m saying Marcus died.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“What does that have to do with my mother?””

Rachel hesitated.

And Olivia knew.

She knew the final secret was coming.

“Marcus died because…”

“Don’t.””

Olivia’s voice was desperate.

But Rachel finished.

“Because Olivia forged documents that destroyed him financially.””

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

Olivia looked at him.

“It wasn’t like that.””

Rachel laughed sadly.

“That’s always your favorite sentence.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Why would my mother know about this?””

Olivia said nothing.

And that silence answered everything.

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Margaret found the connection.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What connection?””

Rachel looked at Olivia.

“The money Olivia took from your account wasn’t just for herself.””

Daniel felt sick.

“Then who was it for?””

No one answered.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Marcus Hale wasn’t alone when he died.””

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked toward Ethan.

Then back at Daniel.

“It means Olivia has a secret child.””

The room went completely silent.

Olivia’s face turned white.

Daniel looked at her.

“You have a child?””

She whispered:

“Daniel…”

“Do you?””

May you like

Olivia couldn’t speak.

And that was all the answer he needed.
