Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Papers
The ambulance lights painted the windows red and blue.
Olivia sat on the couch with a blanket around her shoulders, pretending to shake from fear.
Inside, she was calculating.
Every second.
Every possibility.
Daniel stood near the front door, watching the paramedics carry his mother outside.
His face looked older.
Broken.
But Olivia knew him.
Daniel was kind.
Too kind.
He wanted to believe the best in people.
Especially her.
“Daniel,” Olivia whispered.
He didn’t answer.
“Please.””
Finally, he looked at her.
“What happened?””
The question sounded simple.
But Olivia knew it wasn’t.
She lowered her eyes.
“I already told you.””
“My mother fell?””
“Yes.””
“And Ethan?””
Olivia looked toward the stairs.
The boy was sitting beside the upstairs railing, holding his knees to his chest.
“He’s confused,” Olivia said softly.
Daniel frowned.
“Confused?””
“He saw Grandma fall and panicked.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Ethan said you pushed her.””
Olivia let out a shaky laugh.
“A child saw something scary and misunderstood.””
The sentence sounded reasonable.
Almost believable.
Almost.
But Daniel had never heard Olivia use that tone before.
The tone she used when she was trying to control a conversation.
“Where were you standing?”” he asked.
Olivia blinked.
“What?””
“When Mom fell. Where were you standing?””
She hesitated.
Only for a second.
But Daniel noticed.
“I was behind her.””
“Behind her?””
“Yes.””
“Then how did you try to catch her?””
Olivia’s lips parted.
She had an answer ready.
“I reached forward.””
Daniel looked away.
That was the first moment Olivia felt the ground shifting beneath her.
Not because he knew.
Because he was starting to wonder.
Upstairs, Ethan quietly walked down.
“Dad.””
Daniel immediately softened.
“Come here, buddy.””
Ethan approached slowly.
His face was pale.
“Tell me what you saw,” Daniel said.
Olivia stood.
“Daniel, he’s upset.””
“I asked him.””
The firmness in his voice surprised her.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
And for the first time, she saw fear in his eyes.
Not sadness.
Fear.
“She was talking to Grandma,” Ethan whispered.
Daniel looked at him.
“Who?””
“Mom.””
Olivia’s stomach tightened.
Ethan continued.
“She was yelling.””
“I was not yelling,” Olivia snapped.
The boy flinched.
Daniel noticed.
“Ethan, keep going.””
The child took a deep breath.
“Grandma said she was going to tell you about the papers in her room.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What papers?””
Olivia quickly interrupted.
“There are no papers.””
Ethan looked at her.
“She had them.””
“Ethan,” Olivia said carefully, “you don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Yes, I do.””
The confidence in his voice shocked everyone.
“She showed Grandma’s papers to me yesterday.””
Daniel turned.
“Why would Grandma show you papers?””
Ethan looked down.
“Because she said she needed someone to know where they were.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“Where?””
Ethan pointed.
“In the drawer beside her bed.””
Olivia’s heart began pounding.
Because she knew exactly what was in that drawer.
Daniel walked upstairs.
“Daniel, wait.””
He stopped.
Olivia followed him.
“You’re really going to believe an eight-year-old over your wife?””
Daniel looked back.
The pain in his eyes hurt more than anger would have.
“I’m trying to figure out what to believe.””
That sentence cut deeper than anything else.
Because Olivia realized something.
She wasn’t fighting against Margaret anymore.
Margaret was unconscious.
She wasn’t fighting against Ethan.
He was just a child.
She was fighting against the image Daniel had of her.
The woman he thought he married.
Daniel entered his mother’s bedroom.
Olivia stayed at the doorway.
She watched him open the drawer.
Inside were several documents.
A notebook.
And a sealed envelope.
Daniel picked up the envelope.
His name was written on the front.
Not Olivia’s.
His fingers tightened.
“What is this?””
Olivia said nothing.
Daniel opened it.
The first page was a bank statement.
The second was a copy of a property agreement.
The third was a printed message.
His eyes moved across the page.
And slowly, his face changed.
“Daniel…”
He looked up.
“Did you know about this?””
Olivia felt her mouth go dry.
“About what?””
He held up the paper.
“My mother wrote that she confronted you about transferring money from my account.””
“That’s not true.””
“She wrote that you admitted it.””
“She misunderstood.””
Daniel kept reading.
Then he found something else.
A copy of a document with Olivia’s signature.
A document she never expected him to see.
His hands began to shake.
“What is this?””
Olivia stepped closer.
“Daniel, let me explain.””
But he moved away.
Because for the first time, he wasn’t seeing his wife.
He was seeing a stranger.
Then his phone rang.
The hospital.
Daniel answered immediately.
“Hello?””
His expression changed as he listened.
Olivia watched the color disappear from his face.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Is my mother awake?””
Olivia froze.
Daniel looked directly at her.
May you like
And the next words from the hospital changed everything.
“Your mother regained consciousness… and she’s asking to speak to the police.””
