Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Family Name
Martha stood in the middle of her living room, staring at nothing.
For the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.
Not the kind of fear someone feels when they are caught lying.
The kind of fear someone feels when the thing they buried has finally started breathing again.
“What did they find?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
“Martha.””
My voice was steady.
“I’m done guessing.””
She looked at me slowly.
“You really think you deserve the truth?””
I almost laughed.
After everything she had done, she still sounded like she was the one being wronged.
“Yes,” I said.
“I do.””
She looked away.
Then she walked to the window.
For a long time, she said nothing.
The woman who always had an answer suddenly had none.
Finally, she whispered:
“Nick can never know.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then he definitely needs to know.””
She turned around sharply.
“No.””
The desperation in her voice surprised me.
Not anger.
Panic.
“Why?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because he will hate me.””
I stared at her.
“Martha, you have spent years giving him reasons to.””
She closed her eyes.
The truth hurt her.
But it needed to.
“I made one mistake,” she whispered.
“One?””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“You think everything I did was because I wanted to hurt you.””
“Wasn’t it?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It was because I was terrified.””
I crossed my arms.
“Of what?””
She sat down.
And for the first time, she looked older.
Much older.
“When Nick was born, his father left.””
I said nothing.
“I had no money. No support. Nothing.””
Her voice became quieter.
“I promised myself nobody would ever take my family away from me again.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“It explains everything.””
She looked at me.
“I confused love with control.””
The honesty surprised me.
But it didn’t erase the damage.
“You hurt everyone because you were afraid.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I know.””
That was the first apology she had ever given me.
But it came too late.
Because the consequences had already arrived.
I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Nick was standing in the doorway.
My heart stopped.
“Martha.””
Her face went pale.
“How long have you been there?””
“Long enough.””
The room went silent.
Nick walked inside.
“I heard everything.””
Martha stood.
“Nick…”
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I spent my whole life trying to understand why you couldn’t accept my choices.””
He looked at her.
“And all this time, you were fighting ghosts.””
Martha wiped her tears.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Nick’s voice became stronger.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
She flinched.
Because it was true.
“I lost my son,” she whispered.
Nick looked at her.
“You didn’t lose me because I married Emma.””
A pause.
“You lost me because you refused to let me become my own person.””
Martha sat down.
She looked defeated.
Then Nick pulled something from his pocket.
A small envelope.
“What is that?”” she asked.
He placed it on the table.
“This is from your attorney.””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
“The investigation is complete.””
My heart raced.
The hidden truth.
The thing Martha had feared.
Nick opened the envelope.
Inside was a document.
“Martha, the accident wasn’t the only thing you covered up.””
She looked at him.
“I don’t know what you think you found.””
“No.””
Nick shook his head.
“I know exactly what I found.””
He placed another paper on the table.
“This is from the hospital records.””
Martha went still.
“What does that prove?””
Nick looked at her.
“That you lied.””
Silence.
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Nick took a breath.
“After my accident, the police report said there was evidence another vehicle forced me off the road.””
My eyes widened.
“But the report was changed.””
Martha looked away.
Nick continued.
“The original report disappeared.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who changed it?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Martha whispered:
“I did.””
The confession felt like the room stopped moving.
Nick stared at her.
“You?””
She looked broken.
“I panicked.””
“You erased evidence?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Nick laughed bitterly.
“Protect me?””
His voice shook.
“You almost let me spend my entire life believing I was careless.””
“I was afraid.””
“You were afraid?””
He stepped back.
“I could have died.””
Tears filled Martha’s eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
Nick shook his head.
“You don’t.””
He pointed at the documents.
“You knew someone else caused that accident.””
Martha covered her face.
“I thought if I handled it, everything would disappear.””
I felt sick.
The woman who claimed to protect her family had spent years hiding the truth from them.
Then Martha said something that made my blood run cold.
“There was another reason.””
Nick froze.
“What?””
She looked at him.
“The driver wasn’t a stranger.””
The silence was unbearable.
“Who was it?”” Nick asked.
Martha didn’t answer immediately.
Then she whispered:
“Your father.””
My breath caught.
Nick stared at her.
“My father died when I was sixteen.””
Martha nodded.
“I know.””
“Then how?””
Her face collapsed.
“Because he didn’t leave us.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
For decades, Nick had believed one story.
Now everything was breaking apart.
Martha whispered:
“Your father was alive after the accident.””
Nick looked like he had been hit.
“Where?””
She closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.””
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
“I lost him.””
The words were barely audible.
“He disappeared.””
The room felt unreal.
A dead man.
A hidden accident.
A missing father.
A lifetime of lies.
Nick took a step back.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Martha cried.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
“You always think you can fix everything.””
His voice broke.
“But you only break more.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I looked at the screen.
The same feeling I had before returned.
Like the past was reaching through time.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Is this Emma?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Daniel.””
Nick looked at me.
The man continued.
“I believe you’re looking for the truth about Nick’s father.””
My heart pounded.
“How do you know about that?””
A pause.
May you like
Then he said:
“Because I was there the night he disappeared.””
