Chapter 2: The Guest Nobody Expected
The ballroom doors opened slowly.
Every conversation stopped.
Nick stood there with one hand resting on the shoulder of an older woman.
At first, I didn’t recognize her.
Then I saw Martha.
And I understood.
The woman beside Nick was not a stranger.
She was someone from Martha’s past.
Someone who made her expression change from anger to pure panic.
“Nick,” Martha said.
Her voice was different now.
No confidence.
No arrogance.
Just fear.
The older woman looked around the room.
Her eyes landed on me.
Then on the cut braid still resting in Nick’s hand.
Her face softened.
“Oh, sweetheart…”
She walked toward me slowly.
“I’m so sorry.””
I looked at Nick.
“What’s happening?””
He took my hand.
“This is Evelyn.””
Martha immediately stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Nick turned.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You don’t get to decide when this conversation ends.””
Martha’s lips pressed together.
The woman, Evelyn, looked directly at her.
“I never thought I would see you do something like this again.””
Again.
That word landed harder than anything else.
I looked at Nick.
“What does she mean?””
He squeezed my hand.
“Mom has been telling everyone this is a family tradition.””
Martha crossed her arms.
“Because it is.””
Nick shook his head.
“No, Mom. It isn’t.””
The room was silent.
He turned to the guests.
“I think everyone deserves to know the truth.””
My heart started racing.
I had no idea what was coming.
Nick looked at Evelyn.
She nodded.
Then she reached into her purse and pulled out an old photograph.
She handed it to him.
Nick held it up.
The picture showed a young woman standing in a wedding dress.
Her hair was long.
Beautiful.
And cut into a braid.
My breath caught.
Because the woman in the photograph was Evelyn.
“She was my grandmother,” Nick said.
I stared at him.
“Your grandmother?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
Martha’s face went pale.
“My grandmother married into this family forty years ago.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“She had long hair. She loved it. It was part of who she was.””
Evelyn looked down.
“She spent months growing it for her wedding.””
Her voice trembled.
“Then my mother-in-law cut it off during the reception.””
The guests gasped.
I felt a chill move through me.
Nick continued.
“She claimed it was a family tradition.””
My eyes moved to Martha.
“No…”
Martha’s face hardened.
“This is ridiculous.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“You told me the same thing.””
The room went quiet again.
Forty years disappeared in that moment.
A young bride.
A cruel joke.
A woman who had been told her pain didn’t matter.
Evelyn looked at me.
“I stayed silent because I was afraid.””
She swallowed.
“I thought if I accepted it, things would become easier.””
She shook her head.
“They never did.””
Nick stepped closer.
“My grandmother spent years believing that moment was her fault.””
Martha scoffed.
“You’re making this sound worse than it was.””
Nick turned sharply.
“Worse than it was?””
His voice rose.
“You cut my wife’s hair without permission on the day she married me.””
Martha looked around.
“She’s being emotional.””
“No.””
Nick shook his head.
“She’s reacting normally to being attacked.””
That word changed the room.
Attacked.
Because that was exactly what it was.
Not a joke.
Not a tradition.
Not a misunderstanding.
An attack.
I touched the back of my head again.
The uneven hair reminded me that this was real.
Martha looked at me.
“I was trying to welcome you into the family.””
I stared at her.
“By hurting me?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For the first time, she had no clever answer.
Nick took a deep breath.
“There’s something else everyone should know.””
Martha’s eyes widened.
“Nick.””
But he continued.
“Before the wedding, my mother told me she hoped I would change my mind.””
The room shifted.
“She told me Vanessa was still available.””
A few guests whispered.
I looked at Martha.
She didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because some part of me had always hoped I had misunderstood.
That maybe I was too sensitive.
But there it was.
The truth.
“She said I was throwing away my future,” Nick continued.
Martha lifted her chin.
“I was protecting you.””
“No.””
Nick looked at her.
“You were controlling me.””
The silence afterward felt heavy.
Martha’s eyes filled with anger.
“You would destroy your relationship with your mother over this woman?””
Nick didn’t hesitate.
“I would protect my marriage from anyone.””
Anyone.
Including her.
Martha looked at him like she was seeing a stranger.
Then she looked at Evelyn.
“You brought her here?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Nick.
“He called me.””
Martha’s face changed.
“You knew?””
Nick nodded.
“I found out months ago.””
I frowned.
“Found out what?””
Nick looked at me.
And suddenly, I felt nervous.
Because there was more.
Something he hadn’t told me.
“Martha wasn’t just planning to embarrass you today.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Nick reached into his pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
Then he turned the screen toward me.
I saw a message.
A message from Martha.
My hands became cold.
Because the words on that screen revealed she had planned everything.
Not just the scissors.
Not just the humiliation.
Everything.
May you like
And at the bottom of the conversation was one sentence that made my heart stop:
“If she doesn’t leave after this, I have another way to make sure she’s gone.””
