Chapter 7: The Evidence Hidden Away

Nick didn’t move.

For several seconds, he looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

Then he whispered:

“Who told you that?””

“Sarah.””

His face changed.

“You know her?””

“No.””

But he clearly did.

That scared me more.

“Nick.””

He sat down slowly.

“Sarah worked for my mother.””

The room felt smaller.

“What kind of work?””

“She was her assistant.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I forgot about her.””

I crossed my arms.

“You forgot someone who knows your accident might not have been an accident?””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know.””

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But too many secrets had appeared in too little time.

That night, neither of us slept.

The next morning, we met Sarah at a small coffee shop outside town.

She arrived twenty minutes early.

A nervous woman in her fifties carrying an old leather bag.

The moment she saw Nick, tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Nick looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because I should have told you.””

She sat down.

“I should have told you years ago.””

I looked between them.

“Tell us everything.””

Sarah nodded.

She opened her bag.

Inside was a small notebook.

“I worked for Martha for fifteen years.””

She looked at Nick.

“She was not the person people thought she was.””

Nick’s jaw tightened.

“What happened the night of my accident?””

Sarah took a deep breath.

“She called you.””

“Yes.””

“But she also called someone else.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Sarah hesitated.

“Vanessa’s father.””

Nick went pale.

“Why?””

“Because your mother wanted you to understand what would happen if you refused her.””

The words felt impossible.

Sarah continued.

“She knew you were driving.””

I covered my mouth.

“No.””

Sarah nodded sadly.

“She knew you were upset.””

Nick stared at the table.

“What did she do?””

“She arranged for someone to follow you.””

The silence was unbearable.

Nick’s voice was barely audible.

“Why?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Because she believed fear would bring you back.””

I felt sick.

This wasn’t a mother protecting her son.

This was someone trying to control him.

Sarah opened the notebook.

“I wrote everything down.””

She turned the pages.

Dates.

Times.

Names.

Notes.

“I was afraid.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She had power. Money. Connections.””

Nick looked at the notebook.

“Why keep it?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Because someday I hoped someone would need the truth.””

A car horn sounded outside.

We all looked toward the window.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

Sarah’s face changed.

“She found me.””

Nick stood.

“What?””

Sarah grabbed the notebook.

“We need to leave.””

Too late.

The coffee shop door opened.

A man walked inside.

He looked directly at Sarah.

Then at Nick.

Then he smiled.

Not kindly.

“You people really don’t know when to stop.””

Nick stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored him.

He looked at Sarah.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Sarah backed away.

“Nick…”

The man smiled.

“Martha sends her regards.””

My blood ran cold.

Nick’s expression turned dangerous.

“Get out.””

The man laughed.

“You think you’re winning?””

He looked at me.

“You have no idea what your mother-in-law is capable of.””

Then he placed an envelope on the table.

“For Emma.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

The man smiled.

“A reminder.””

Then he walked out.

Nick waited until the door closed.

Then he picked up the envelope.

His face changed when he saw the handwriting.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“It’s from my mother.””

My heart sank.

“Open it.””

He did.

Inside was one single photograph.

And when I saw what was in that picture…

I realized Martha’s plan had started long before my wedding day.
