Chapter 8: The Whitmore Family Secret

Eleanor Whitmore had always been the strongest person Nate knew.

She survived losing her husband.

She survived raising two children alone.

She survived watching her son break after Emily’s death.

She was the person everyone turned to when things collapsed.

But standing in the hallway, holding a flashlight, she looked different.

Not strong.

Caught.

“Mom?””

Eleanor said nothing.

Caroline would have called her expression sadness.

Nate knew better.

It was guilt.

“What are you doing here?””

Eleanor looked at Grace.

Then Madeline.

Then him.

“I was trying to stop this.””

Nate laughed quietly.

“Stop what?””

“The truth.””

The honesty shocked him.

“You’re admitting it?””

Eleanor stepped into the room.

“I’m admitting that some truths destroy families.””

Nate stared.

“My family was already destroyed.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice rose.

“You knew Emily was afraid.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the box.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the money.””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Yes.””

Madeline whispered:

“Nate.””

But he couldn’t stop.

“How long?””

Eleanor looked away.

“How long did you know?””

“Since before Emily died.””

The answer was devastating.

Nate stepped back.

“Before?””

Grace closed her eyes.

She knew this was coming.

“What happened the night Emily died?”” Nate asked.

Eleanor’s face changed.

“I don’t want to do this here.””

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You don’t get to choose anymore.””

Silence.

Then Eleanor sat down.

“My father started Bellamy & Cole.””

Nate knew that.

The company had been part of the Whitmore family legacy for decades.

“He built it honestly,” Eleanor continued.

“But?””

“But people change things after they inherit something.””

Nate waited.

“Your uncle Marcus changed everything.””

Nate froze.

Marcus.

His father’s younger brother.

The uncle who had moved overseas after his father’s death.

The uncle nobody discussed.

“He was involved?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He created fake accounts.””

“And my father?””

“Your father discovered it.””

Nate felt sick.

“Then why didn’t he expose him?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Because Marcus threatened you.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“He told your father if he went public, you would lose everything.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Eleanor’s voice broke.

“That was always the Whitmore way.””

“What does that mean?””

“Protect the family name.””

Nate stared.

“You protected the name.””

“Yes.””

“You protected the company.””

“Yes.””

“You protected everyone except the people who needed you.””

Eleanor started crying.

“I know.””

The words echoed.

Madeline’s words.

Everyone knew.

Everyone always knew.

Grace spoke softly.

“Emily found the old records.””

Nate looked at her.

“She found out Marcus had continued after your father died.””

“And?””

“And she wanted to report it.””

Eleanor nodded.

“She was going to.””

“Why didn’t she?””

Eleanor looked at the floor.

“Because she came to me first.””

Nate felt numb.

“What did you say?””

“I begged her.””

“For what?””

“To wait.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The confession was almost a whisper.

“I had already lost my husband. I couldn’t lose my son too.””

Nate’s anger disappeared for one second.

Then returned stronger.

“You let her die.””

Eleanor broke.

“I didn’t know.””

“You knew enough.””

“I thought Marcus would stop.””

“Did he?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Nate turned away.

The woman who raised him had spent three years letting him mourn an accident.

Knowing it wasn’t one.

Then Eleanor reached into her coat.

She placed something on the table.

A small USB drive.

“Emily gave this to me.””

Nate stared.

“Why?””

“Because she thought I could still do the right thing.””

“And did you?””

Eleanor looked at the drive.

“No.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Nate picked it up.

“What’s on this?””

Eleanor whispered:

“The proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Her eyes met his.

“Proof that Emily didn’t die because she discovered the secret.””

A pause.

“Emily died because she discovered who was protecting it.””

Nate looked at Grace.

Then Madeline.

Then his mother.

Three women.

Three secrets.

One dead wife.

Before anyone could speak, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar smile.

Nate had not seen him in three years.

The man looked at the USB drive in Nate’s hand.

Then smiled.

“Looks like Emily finally got you to open your eyes.””

Nate’s blood went cold.

May you like

Because the man standing in the doorway was supposed to be dead.

Marcus Whitmore.
