Chapter 10: The Truth Emily Chose
Nate opened Emily’s letter with shaking hands.
He expected anger.
Accusations.
A final warning.
Instead, the first words were gentle.
*Nate, if you are reading this, then I know you are hurting. I’m sorry.*
His throat tightened.
Emily always apologized before anyone else.
Even when she was the one being hurt.
*I need you to understand something. The truth is not simple. There are no heroes in this story. Only people who made choices.*
Nate looked at his mother.
She was crying silently.
Marcus stood against the wall.
Grace looked away.
Madeline sat with her hands folded.
Everyone was waiting.
*Your father made mistakes. Marcus made worse ones. And I made one too.*
Nate frowned.
Emily admitting fault felt impossible.
*I believed I could fix everything alone. I believed if I collected enough evidence, I could force people to do the right thing.*
He continued reading.
*I was wrong.*
A tear fell onto the page.
*People do not become better because they are exposed. Sometimes they become more dangerous.*
Nate looked up.
“Who hurt you?””
Nobody answered.
He kept reading.
*The night I died, I met Marcus.*
His eyes moved quickly.
*I expected him to threaten me. Instead, he told me something I never expected.*
Nate looked at Marcus.
Marcus’s expression was empty.
*He told me your father had been trying to expose the corruption before he died. He told me the reason your father stopped was because someone else had already taken control.*
Nate’s heartbeat increased.
*Someone inside our family. Someone who had access to everything.*
He stopped.
Slowly looked at Eleanor.
She looked away.
No.
Not his mother.
Emily’s next words answered him.
*Nate, I am sorry. The person I feared most was not Marcus.*
The room became silent.
*It was your mother.*
Nate dropped the letter.
“No.””
Eleanor broke.
“I didn’t kill her.””
The words came too quickly.
Too desperately.
Nate looked at her.
“Then explain.””
Eleanor covered her face.
“I met Emily that night.””
Grace closed her eyes.
She knew.
Nate whispered:
“You lied.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone says that.””
His voice cracked.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me while they destroyed everything.””
Eleanor cried.
“Emily came to me with the evidence.””
“What did you do?””
“I begged her to stop.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew what would happen.””
“What would happen?””
“She would expose everyone.””
Nate stared.
“Everyone?””
“Yes.””
His mother looked at him.
“Your father. Marcus. The company. Me.””
“Why you?””
Eleanor looked broken.
“Because I knew.””
The confession was quiet.
“I knew your father had been involved at first.””
Nate said nothing.
“I knew Marcus was stealing.””
Her voice shook.
“And I knew your father was trying to fix it.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because I was afraid.””
The same answer.
Always fear.
“You were afraid of losing us.””
“Yes.””
“So you let Emily carry it.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
“What happened that night?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“She left angry.””
“Because of you?””
“Yes.””
Nate felt sick.
“She drove away.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Eleanor looked at Marcus.
“He followed her.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“I did not hurt her.””
Nate looked at him.
“Then what happened?””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Someone else was there.””
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Grace whispered:
“Me.””
Every person turned.
Nate stared.
“What?””
Grace was crying.
“I followed Emily.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew she was going to report everything.””
“And?””
“I wanted to convince her not to.””
Nate shook his head.
“No.””
“I was scared.””
“Everyone was scared.””
Grace looked at him.
“I reached her car.””
“What happened?””
“She was alive.””
The room went silent.
“She wasn’t in an accident yet?””
Grace shook her head.
“No.””
Nate felt cold.
“Then what happened?””
Grace looked at Eleanor.
“I saw someone else.””
“Who?””
Grace’s voice broke.
“The person who pushed Emily’s car off the road.””
Nate waited.
The answer felt impossible.
Then Grace said:
“It was your brother.””
Nate froze.
“My brother is dead.””
Grace shook her head.
“No.””
A horrible realization moved through him.
His family had one more secret.
One more person.
“Who?””
Marcus stepped forward.
His face was full of regret.
“Your brother wasn’t dead.””
Nate stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Your parents told you he died as a baby.””
The room spun.
“But?””
Marcus whispered:
“He survived.””
Nate couldn’t speak.
“No.””
Eleanor collapsed into a chair.
“He was sick.””
“What?””
“He was born with complications.””
Her voice broke.
“We were told he wouldn’t survive.””
“But he did?””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Same eyes.
Same jawline.
A face Nate had never seen but somehow recognized.
The stranger looked at him.
And smiled.
“Hello, Nate.””
A pause.
“I’m sorry it took so long for you to meet me.””
Nate couldn’t move.
The man stepped inside.
“My name is Adrian Whitmore.””
He looked at Emily’s letter in Nate’s hand.
