Chapter 4: The Name On The Paper

Nate stared at the paper for so long that the words stopped looking like words.

His own name.

Written by Emily.

Three years ago.

Before the funeral.

Before Madeline.

Before everything fell apart.

Rebecca watched him carefully.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

He looked up.

“What does this mean?””

“I don’t know.””

“You brought me here because you don’t know?””

“I brought you here because Emily wanted you to find it.””

Nate grabbed the paper.

“She wrote my name.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rebecca’s expression was painful.

“Maybe because she was afraid you would never look.””

The sentence cut deeper than he expected.

Because Emily knew him.

She knew he avoided painful truths.

She knew he wanted peace more than answers.

The same thing that made him a loving husband once might have made him blind later.

His phone rang.

Caroline.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?””

“Nate.””

Her voice was tense.

“Sophie woke up.””

“Is she okay?””

“She’s fine.””

A pause.

“But someone came by.””

His grip tightened.

“Who?””

“She wouldn’t tell me.””

“Caroline.””

“She only said one thing.””

“What?””

Caroline lowered her voice.

“She said, ‘The lady from Mommy’s pictures was here.’”

Nate froze.

“What pictures?””

“I don’t know.””

“Where is Sophie?””

“With me.””

“I’m coming.””

He hung up.

Rebecca stood.

“You need to be careful.””

Nate looked at her.

“Who is the lady?””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached into her bag again.

“This was also in Emily’s file.””

A photograph.

Nate took it.

The image was old.

Emily standing outside a restaurant.

Beside her was a woman.

Nate knew the woman.

Not personally.

But enough.

His face changed.

“No.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because she was at Emily’s funeral.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“And?””

“And she cried.””

Rebecca’s voice became quiet.

“People cry for many reasons.””

Nate looked back at the picture.

Grace.

His late wife’s best friend.

The woman who had comforted him after Emily died.

The woman who knew where everything in Emily’s house was.

The woman who told him Madeline was dangerous.

The woman who had supposedly found the box.

His phone buzzed.

A message.

From Grace.

Nate, I’m sorry. I should have told you sooner.

Another message arrived.

I was trying to protect Emily’s secret.

Then another.

But I never thought you would bring Madeline into this.

Nate stared.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

He didn’t answer.

Because another message appeared.

This one was shorter.

And it changed everything.

Your wife wasn’t looking for the box.

She was hiding it from you.

Nate felt the room spin.

Madeline had been afraid.

Emily had left his name.

Grace had the box.

And somehow, all three women were connected to a secret he had never known existed.

Then the final message appeared.

A photo attachment.

Nate opened it.

It was the wooden box.

Sitting on a table.

Open.

Empty.

May you like

And written inside the lid were four words.

*He was supposed to know.*
