Chapter 8: The Father Who Came Back
The police moved quickly after Daniel escaped.
They increased patrols around the house.
They checked every camera.
Every entrance.
Every possible way someone could get inside.
But none of that made me feel safe.
Because Daniel had already proven something.
Locks didn’t stop him.
Security systems didn’t stop him.
The person I trusted most had let him into my life without me knowing.
And now my children were the target.
I spent the night sitting outside the nursery.
I didn’t sleep.
I couldn’t.
Every small sound made me stand.
Every shadow made me look.
Around 3 a.m., Victoria walked upstairs.
She stood beside me.
“You hate me.””
I didn’t look at her.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
“That’s worse.””
Maybe it was.
Because hatred would have been easier.
“I loved you.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t know what it feels like to realize the person you trusted was lying to you every day.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
“No, Victoria.””
My voice broke.
“You don’t.””
For once, she didn’t argue.
The next morning, Detective Harris arrived with new information.
“We found Daniel’s vehicle.””
I looked at him.
“Where?””
“Near the fertility clinic.””
Victoria went pale.
“Why there?””
“That’s what we’re trying to understand.””
He placed a file on the table.
“We also found something else.””
Inside was a printed email.
Sent seven years earlier.
From Daniel.
To the fertility clinic.
The message was simple.
*“If Victoria tries to remove my rights, remind her what happens when people take what belongs to me.””*
My hands tightened.
“He was threatening her.””
“Yes.””
“But why didn’t anyone stop him?””
Detective Harris looked frustrated.
“Because he disappeared before the complaint was completed.””
I looked at Victoria.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She whispered:
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
“You almost got someone killed.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice spoke.
“James.””
My body froze.
Daniel.
I stood immediately.
“Where are you?””
He laughed softly.
“You sound angry.””
“You broke into my house.””
“You mean our house?””
My grip tightened.
“You don’t get to call it that.””
A pause.
Then:
“You’re raising my children.””
The words made my blood boil.
“They are not yours.””
Daniel laughed.
“You still believe that?””
I looked at Detective Harris.
He motioned for me to keep him talking.
“What do you want?””
“I want what was always mine.””
“You don’t own people.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“But I do own the truth.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What truth?””
“The truth Victoria buried.””
I looked at my wife.
She looked terrified.
“You don’t know anything about my family.””
Daniel laughed.
“James.””
A pause.
“You really think you’re the first man she lied to?””
I said nothing.
“Ask her about the night the babies were born.””
My eyes moved to Victoria.
“What about it?””
Daniel continued.
“She didn’t tell you one baby was already registered before birth.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Victoria whispered:
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“What does he mean?””
Daniel laughed.
“She never told you because she was afraid you’d ask who signed the paperwork.””
Detective Harris immediately started typing on his laptop.
“Where are you?””
I asked.
Daniel ignored me.
“You think DNA matters?””
His voice lowered.
“Wait until you learn which baby is yours.””
The call ended.
I looked at Victoria.
“What did he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Victoria.””
She sat down.
“I need to show you something.””
She went upstairs.
A few minutes later, she returned holding a small envelope.
“I kept this hidden.””
My anger returned.
“Another secret?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
Inside was a hospital bracelet.
Not one.
Two.
Both with my children’s names.
But one had a handwritten note attached.
My hands shook as I read it.
*Twin A — Genetic Match Pending*
*Twin B — Daniel Hayes*
I looked up.
“You knew?””
Victoria cried.
“I knew one was Daniel’s.””
“Which one?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“What?””
“The clinic records were destroyed.””
“Destroyed?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
Victoria looked at me.
“Daniel.””
The room went silent.
Then Detective Harris stood.
“Wait.””
He took the bracelets.
“Where did you get these?””
Victoria looked confused.
“From the hospital.””
“When?””
“The day after delivery.””
He examined them.
Then his face changed.
“These aren’t hospital bracelets.””
“What?””
He turned them over.
“These were made recently.””
My heart dropped.
Someone had planted them.
Someone wanted us to believe one child belonged to Daniel.
Before anyone could react, the house alarm started screaming.
Everyone froze.
Detective Harris reached for his weapon.
“Stay here.””
The police moved through the house.
I grabbed the nursery door.
And stopped.
Because the door was already open.
My children were inside.
But standing beside the cribs…
was a man.
Daniel.
May you like
He smiled.
“Hello, James.””
